Philips Key019 Key Ring Camcorder
Shipping From Amazon
07/22/2004 11:35 AM

ama_key019.jpgReader Nick Osinski writes in to say that Amazon is finally shipping the $250 Philips Key019 Key Ring Camcorder, the flash drive-cum-video cam-cum-MP3 player that happens to have a really slick little integrated LCD display. I like the Key019 a lot, in concept at least, but be forewarned that it's a lot bigger than it looks when photographed alone. When they say "half the size of a mobile phone" they aren't kidding.

Anime keychain drives

Gizmodo has the scoop on a line of Gundam-branded USB keychain drives.
To appeal to the "maniacs" (Japanese for "someone who knows too much,") IO Data has included two features for collectors of the drives - and I'm not making this up - by installing the included "Cute" software, your desktop wallpaper will automatically change to a corresponding Gundam wallpaper. When you take it out, it will go back to normal. The second feature is the screensaver, which when you purchase and use more than one of these drives, will add the respective characters to the ensuing action. You too can engage in intergalactic space combat for about $55 USD for a USB 2.0 mecha, or $45 for a USB 1.1 mecha.

Somebody asked me today why Windows XP doesn't have something like Mac OS X's Keychain: a secure, systemwide store for names and passwords. And then I remembered, dimly, that it does -- sort of. When XP came out, all the feature lists mentioned Credential Manager, which uses the Windows Data Protection API (DPAPI) to do something that sounds just like what the OS X Keychain does. On XP, you get to the Credential Manager like so: Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage my Network Passwords. ...

08/05/2004 10:52 AM

spinuser_ie.jpg image"Spin" is a persistence-of-vision keychain prototype that, when spun through the air like, say, a lasso, displays a clock face in the air. There are even three different display modes, including an 'analog' mode that displays a highlighted arc of the circle, with the leading edge indicating the current hour and the trailing edge indicating minutes.

There is talk of this design being picked up and mass produced by a couple of different companies; make that happen, boys, because I want it.

Sony's 3 CCD HDV HDR-FX1 Camcorder

Sony's 3 CCD HDV HDR-FX1 Camcorder 09/07/2004 06:47 AM

sony-hdr-fx1-big-1.jpg imageSony's new 3 CCD HDV camcorder, the HDR-FX1, has been formally introduced by the company after an initial preview at this year's CeBit. What makes it so special? Well, along with a host of other interesting features, the FX1 has the ability to capture video in 1080i at 60 interlaced frames per second. Add into that a projected street price of only around $3,500 and the FX1 becomes a pretty amazing piece of gear, and definitely one that will get most prosumer and semi-pro film makers all hot and bothered. The FX1 should be available in November, and a hands-on with the press is expected tomorrow (so expect to see more news). (Thanks, David!)

Sony unveils HDV camcorder

Sony unveils HDV camcorder 09/07/2004 10:40 AM
Sony Corp. will begin selling its first high-definition video camcorder in Japan on Oct. 15, and worldwide by the end of the year, the company said in an announcement Tuesday. While the camcorder is compatible with Japan's HDV high-definition digital video format, users cannot store video on Sony's Blu-ray Disc format. The HDR-FX1 camcorder is Sony's first step in promoting high definition video as the standard format for home-use camcorders, but its price makes it too expensive for most families initially, the company said.

Sony Direct-to-DVD Camcorder 12/25/2004 05:18 PM

sony_DVD7E.jpg imageThe first thing that comes to mind when seeing Sony's DCR-DVD7E is that it looks rather like a Discman, but this is of course only because it must make room for a DVD-R, DVD-RW, or DVD+RW to use as recording media. The unit, announced yesterday in Europe, has a 2.5-inch LCD viewfinder on the back, and despite perhaps looking a bit unimpressive, the lens does a respectable 10x optical zoom. No idea what it's going to cost when it hits European shelves in May.

Samsung's new camcorder phone

Samsung's new camcorder phone 11/06/2003 03:00 AM
Just got word of a new camcorder phone from Samsung that can record up to two hours of video. But it gets even better. The SCH-V410 can also double as a remote control for a TV or DVD player, take still digital pictures (with flash), and play music stored on it without having to open up the phone. It also has a 262,000 color internal LCD screen, an external OLED screen, and support for video-on-demand services. The V410 is just for the South Korean market, but Samsung is planning to make a PCS version of it called the SPH-V4300 which could conceivably be sold here in the US....

Sony DCR-PC350 Camcorder Reviewed 07/09/2004 01:27 PM

Sony-DCR-PC350_flash.jpg imageCamCorderInfo has the first review I've seen of the Sony DCR-PC350, the new pocket-sized camcorder with the 3.31-megapixel sensor. Sadly, although it's a pretty decent review in general, they don't talk too much about the still image quality, something I'm sure many of us would like to know more about, since one of the major selling points of the DCR-PC350 is its function as a convergence device. Still, there is some good information in there, including talk of a "Cinematic Effect" setting that shoots video progressively, tweaks the color, and drops every fifth frame in an effort to emulate the look of film. And it works, sort of, at least as an interesting effect (although they say it ends up looking more like 8mm film than fancy, Hollywood-quality stuff.)
