Entrances to hell

Entrances to hell

Entrances to hell 03/13/2003 10:24 AM

Obscure but handy online directory of gateways to the underworld located throughout the UK.

The devil's liver trouble probably began here at Crizzle after a month long drunken holiday at a mutants fairground in the 1300s. Crizzle now broadcasts confusing directions to air traffic with a view to creating controlled flights into terrain. Gold ornamentation is to be seen in the rafter work and the entire length of tunnel has 33,345,567,863,426,875,678 stained wooden steps of which five are in need of repair. This entrance is a rich source of low-self-esteem-gas and is occasionally overgrown with gorse.

One hell of a bad bill

One hell of a bad bill 06/05/2005 11:10 PM
Sen. James Sensenbrenner (Rep., Wisc.) has introduced H.R. 1528, a bill that would mandate a ten-year minimum sentence if you smoke pot within 500 feet of a child. And that's just the beginning of its badness. If you see someone using drugs anywhere near a child, you must tell the cops within 24 hours or go to jail for 2-10 years...unless you're the parent of the child so wickedly exposed to someone smoking a joint, in which case you're sent away for 3-20. Yeah, forcing people to become informants. That's what's made this country great. The bill has been referred...

Economists in hell.

Economists in hell. 11/03/2003 01:22 PM
Problems in infinite decision theory [pdf]. You are in hell and facing an eternity of torment, but the devil offers you a way out, which you can take once and only once at any time from now on. Today, if you ask him to, the devil will toss a fair coin once and if it comes up heads you are free (but if tails then you face eternal torment with no possibility of reprieve). You don’t have to play today, though, because tomorrow the devil will make the deal slightly more favourable to you (and you know this): he’ll toss the coin twice but just one head will free you. The day after, the offer will improve further: 3 tosses with just one head needed. And so on (4 tosses, 5 tosses, ….1000 tosses …) for the rest of time if needed. So, given that the devil will give you better odds on every day after this one, but that you want to escape from hell some time, when should accept his offer? More discussion here.
