Safety of a different kind

Safety of a different kind

Safety of a different kind 04/09/2004 05:30 PM

Speaking of safety, here is a gadget that offers safety of a more enjoyable kind for callous geeks like me looking for a good place to rest our wrists (via Gizmodo) .

They should offer versions for those who prefer to rest their wrist on a male chest.  I'll provide a mold of my chest for a reasonable fee.  While my chest is not as good looking as Brad Pitts', I think I have more professional looking nipples.  Besides, I am in ternationally respected where Brad is only internationally ogled.

Design quality-wise, I give the left one a B but the right one gets a C because the gel bumps are not symmetric.  More advanced design could allow a picture to be 'slipped-in' like those promotional mousepads and control buttons to inflate the gel bumps.  BTW, I see no obvious security vulnerabilities in these products.

High Growth Expected for Safety PLCs &
Safety Bus/Networks

High Growth Expected for Safety PLCs &
Safety Bus/Networks
04/14/2005 04:00 AM
There are concerns about the reliability and safety in the use of safety buses/networks for machine automatic safeguarding, particularly when safety and non-safety data is handled by the same bus/network. Nevertheless usage is expected to grow significantly over the forecast period, as the use of safety PLCs grows and reliability of operations with safety buses/networks becomes proven. Usage is particularly attractive when machines and controls become more complex (i.e., for example, requiring many emergency stops and/or safety gate switches with multiple actuators). A different kind of May day

A different kind of May day 05/01/2004 12:38 AM
First of May is always a big celebration in Finland, especially among students. Traditions go rampant, all who are able to get out to party (except for the most hardened cynics), alcohol is consumed in alarmingly large quantities, and the entire city of Helsinki becomes one giant outdoor toilet. It is the celebration of life and the end of winter.

This morning, 50,000 people gather in the Helsinki Kaisaniemi park to eat breakfast, drink champagne, and enjoy the sun.

Me?

I'm watching Teletubbies with my niece. And chatting with one-syllable words.

And can't really say that it's a bad thing either.

Web ad sales to hit $6.9 billion [CNET News.com - The Net]

I sat in a meeting today discussing new kinds of ad sales.  There are people out there who will pay real money (apparently as much as $6.9B this year) to put pixels in front of your face that have hot zones to click on.  These pixels, usually form the pattern of text or images that represent products, services or brands.

So how can we take all the pent up energy, potential and creativity of teh past 15 years - and do somethign creative with this potential - besides swinging Spiderman interstitials?

:-)

What I'm doing is incredibly fun!  I can't believe i get paid for doing what I love to do more than anything else (except make babies!)  But I AM making a baby - a new kind of.....

OOOoppps.  Sorry I can't tell you or else I'd have to kill you.  Needless to say what we're doing includes new kinds of 'Web Ads'.

I think Halle Berry is sexy, particularly her face, voice, and, er, you know what.  But I didn't think her nose was that particularly good looking until I saw her Catwoman photos like the one above.  Isn't it amazing how hiding the nose under the mask changes her overall look?  She doesn't look like Halle Berry at all.  Even her you know what looks less attractive.  Weird.

I filed this post under Technical category for obvious reasons.

a spam kind of day

a spam kind of day 01/06/2004 08:03 AM

Feeling better today. For some reason I'm having trouble at the moment reaching several sites on the Internet. Unclear if this is a widespread problem, or just one of my provider. Plus, as if mail spam was not enough, this morning I woke up to a barrage of spam comments posted on this weblog, more than sixty in total. I've been deleting them for the last hour (halfway through now) since movable type doesn't have (that I know of) a "master" comment list where I can delete all at once and rebuild all the entries in a single clikc. Plus, it's slow to rebuild on this machine (which means that posting all those comments must have taken a good time). Nothing wrecks workflow like having to deal with enormous amounts of spam. As I'm deleting comments I'm also closing comment threads to prevent more spam postings. Sigh.

Get thee now to K-Mart! Stumbled upon a shelf full the exclusive Cantina Scenes (set 1) this morning at my local L.A. area K-Mart. There appears to be four per case, as that's how many were on the shelf, and some slight color differences compared to the cancelled Wal-Mart sets. All in all a cool looking set that I'm sure many fans will appreciate finally being made available at retail. Happy hunting!

Just a truck kind of gal

Just a truck kind of gal 07/06/2004 06:26 PM
I don't come from a family of car people, you know, those kind of people that actually car about cars, buy new cars, keep their cars clean, and/or actually name their cars. No, my parents represented that rarest of California demographic during their eight years in the Bay Area: the one car family. Nearly my whole life our four-person family had one solid, dependable car. Nothing too flashy, and rarely anything new. At this very moment, my parents swear their current car (purchased used) is satisfactory, even though they just had the door welded back on because it was rusted through and nearly fell off. So imagine my surprise this summer when I discovered that there was a vehicle for me! After years of avoiding driving as much as possible, and in general demonstrating great distain for all things car, I've unlocked one of my life's mysteries. You know how they say you really figure out who you are in your thirties? Well I've discovered I am a truck person! I've been lucky to have a 1996 Ford pick-up at my disposal this summer, and boy have I enjoyed tooling around in it! Aside from its obvious greatness due to its green color, it's also just fun. It bumps along the dirt roads in a very satisfying manner. Its bed is perfect for holding my clamming gear, or mulch, or just beach chairs. And everywhere I go, I share knowing nods with other island pick-up truck drivers. Yup, I may not be a car person. But I sure am a truck person.

r3478715366 This species of fish, the Hydrolagus matallanasi, has been swimming around for perhaps 180 million years. Apparently, it was first discovered by Brazillian fisherman in 2001 but the photo was just released today. According to researchers, this species of chimaera (or ratfish) is over a foot long and is related to sharks. "It's like if we had an animal as old as the Tyrannosaurus rex still alive," Jules Soto, curator of the Oceanographic Museum of the Universdad do Vale do Itajai, told Reuters. Link (Thanks, G!)

Cheap i18n fun for the morning (emphasises mine):

Orkut is an online trusted community web site designed for friends. The main goal of our service is to make the social life of yourself and your friends more active and stimulating. The community site allows friends to virtually come together, find common interests, share relevant information, and organize social events.

The community will, in essence, create a closer and more intimate network of friends."

I'm absolutely sure this will help people come together... For any non-finnish speakers out there, "orkut" is a common slang term for "orgasm". "Sain orkut" = "I had an orgasm". Well picked site name, indeed. It's even affiliated with Google :-).

My kind of town.....

My kind of town..... 07/11/2004 10:47 AM

David Weinberger asks....

My wife and I are taking 3 days of vacation in Chicago, starting tomorrow. I've been there many times on business, which means I'm very familiar with the airport and am fully qualified to operate the remote in the hotel rooms, and my wife hasn't been there in 30 years or so.

So, we're going to do the tourist thing. Outside of the obvious, any recommendations? (Three notes: Second City is closed the days we're there, we don't eat meat and we don't much care for the blues.)

[Joho the blog]

I was born and raised in Chi-town Il. Here's a few highlights:
- Watertower = on Michigan Ave.
- Navy Pier = at Navy Pier
- Michigan Ave = the Miracle Mile
- Home of the Blues = Checkboard Lounge
- Ribs = Robinson's
- Italian Beef = Al's Beef (on Harrison, out by U of IL, Chicago Circle campus)
- City Beaches = North Beach
- Zoo = Lincoln Park Zoo
- Museum = the Art Institute of Chicago (I went to school there)
- Grant Park = symphony
- Museum of Natural History = dinosaurs

That aught to keep you bust. I HIGHLY suggest an Al's Beef, hot peppers - with provolone.

Oh yah during the summer, there's KILLER Italian Ice right across the street from Al's - on Harrison. Over 30 flavors - totally uniqiue - like nothing you've had before (even in Venice when you went to dinner with Paolo.)

But Chicago doesn't have black squid ink.

And Maxwell St. is gone.....

And the steel mills.

:-(

Hey here's some research for you! Find out who Cap Streeter is and why it's called Streeterville. He was an early revolutionary who declared a seperate state - maybe it was even a seperate country.

Thne research Mayor Daley and bow your head and pray to the history of poltiics in America. Without Mayor Daley we wouldn't have - Mayor Daley, nepotism and George W.

Oh yah and look up the Chagall Mosaic at 1st National Bank. I videotaped teh unveiling - in 1972. My first editing project.

New Kind of Conferences 05/08/2004 05:21 PM

Check out Dave's rant on conference and his prototype design of a new kind of conferences: BloggerCon II.  Damn.  Now I regret I didn't make it to BloggerCon II.  First BloggerCon wasn't that attractive to me and the second one left me scratching my head.  Now I know I should have been knocking my head instead to let the idea of a totally open conference in.

Kudos, Dave (someday I'll find out what the hell that means precisely).

The infected attachment was called “You_will_answer_to_me.cpl” The Beagle virus like many others spoofs the sender email address, so I haven’t sent a note to Gnomie, however, this is a nice reminder to not assume attachments from familiar names are safe.
