Longhorn's delay may be Linux's gain, according to Linux vendors and analysts. With Longhorn shorn of most of its most important features, such as WinFS (Windows File System), Linux supporters are hopeful that the Linux desktop can finally make inroads into the hearts and minds of corporate desktop users.

Dr. Frederick Berenstein, chairman and CTO of Xandros Inc., thinks Linux can do more than just catch up with Windows. He thinks Linux can do better.

"It is understandable, given the complexity of Microsoft's vision of the new [WinFS] system that they chose to remove it from Longhorn until it is fully functional. The Linux community is aware of the direction Microsoft is taking and is planning to bring comparable pervasive search capabilities to the Linux desktop," said Berenstein.

Specifically, Berenstein noted, "It was just announced at the KDE [K Desktop Environment] Community World Summit that the next release of KDE upon which the Xandros GUI is based, may incorporate a Google-type facility on the control panel to search local content. Considering the Longhorn delays, there's a good chance that Xandros will beat Microsoft to the punch."

If you're working in technology these days, you've probably noticed that budgets are suddenly opening up. Companies are willing to spend again. From here, it appeared like things really started freeing up in the second and third quarter - but most of those budgets were still somewhat constrained by overall year 2003 budgets. Now that most companies have their 2004 budgets in place, the story is that there's a lot more money there to spend. Does that mean a return to the carefree "sure, we'll buy whatever you have to sell" days of the boom years? Not quite. It sounds like at least a few people have learned their lessons, and while they may have more money to spend, customers want to make sure they're actually getting some value out of what they buy. At least, that's the story they tell the analysts. Whether or not that's what actually happens remains to be seen. Of course you're going to tell an analyst that you need to be cautious in how you spend, but when you realize you still have half your budget left, and are afraid the folks higher up will simply give you less cash next time, you find a way to spend it... fast.

382 of our 1325 settlement CDs are "new"; all the rest are either cut-outs/remainders, or in the case of three titles, "promotional use only" CDs (either stamped with that slogan or with the barcode punched BEFORE the cd was shrinkwrapped).

That means 71.2% of what they sent us is stuff currently sold in remainder bins. Dunno if the terms of the agreement said they couldn't send cutouts or not, but if I know the record industry, they are following the letter but not the spirit of the settlement....

I very likely already own copies of some of these at my library already. Now you do the math- I have 10 branches- If I wanted to actually add all these copies to the library, that's 3.4 copies of a Bee Gees record, or 5.7 copies of 'three mo' tenors' PER LOCATION....

I believe the CDs for our members are coming here to SLS and we will then distribute them. They haven't arrived yet, so I can't verify if libraries in Chicago's south suburbs also got the shaft.

It would be interesting to scan all of the barcodes on these CDs and start a database of what was sent to each library. Did each one get 57 copies of the tenors?? Things that make you go hmmmm.
