09/08/2004 04:48 PM
EditShare LLC announced on Wednesday that version 2.0 of its media management software EditShare will be released in October. The upgrade expands the base storage of entry level set-ups to 2TB -- scalable to 12TB in a rack mount version -- and adds several new management features, including a graphical representation of occupied disk space. The system ships with a Windows server, but it's capable of supporting Final Cut Pro and Avid Xpress workstations, with the ability to share media files between 10 computers. EditShare said that it will announce pricing at the time version 2.0 ships, although customers who purchase version 1.5 between now and then will be able to upgrade for free.

Linksys Network Storage Link, Turn Any
USB Harddrive Into Network Storage

Linksys Network Storage Link, Turn Any
USB Harddrive Into Network Storage
06/15/2004 11:54 AM

linksys_nslu.jpg imageWhile they're promoting it with Maxtor, there's nothing stopping you from using Linksys's new Network Storage Link (NSLU2) with any external USB hard drive to turn it into a network storage device (not unlike the Mirra or other backup units). Storage Link even provides passworded web-access to files and multiple users (although they don't get into the details of how multi-user sharing will work). Since the Storage Link works via RJ-45 (regular ol' Ethernet), there's nothing preventing you from attaching it to a wireless router and using it over WiFi, either (albeit at lower speeds than a wired network, of course). Even better, it sounds like you can continue to add additional USB hard drives to the device to increase storage as you go along. Not bad for $100.

If you've managed to get InnoDB working

If you've managed to get InnoDB working with MySQL under X, I'd very much like to talk to you. I've created a my.cnf file in /usr/local/mysql/data/ with the following:

# mysqld configuration file for InnoDB tables
[mysqld]
innodb_data_file_path=ibdata1:50M;ibdata2:50M
innodb_data_home_dir=/usr/local/mysql/data
and that looks correct to me but either it isn't or MySQL is ignoring the file completely or I've missed a step in getting InnoDB installed properly. I'm stumped so if you've got any ideas, I'd really like to hear them. Discuss
