Juice Boost Scam Keeps Growing And
Growing...
08/17/2004 05:02 PM
A couple weeks ago we had the story about the not really free, not really broadband, free broadband scam from a company named Juice Boost. Broadband Reports has an update today about how the scam/joke/pyrami d scheme/something is taking on an incredible life of its own. The scam, of course, involves some sort of non-existent accelerator software and claims that even the most non-tech-savvy individual should realize are completely made up (free broadband connections over telephone lines and a regular modem that never go down and they'll pay you if you receive a spam message or if the connection drops among other, equally ridiculous claims). Looking for any kind of details on the company turn up nothing but more affiliates (some of whom have even sent out press releases or promises of bars of silver if you sign up). The problem, of course, is that they're promising affiliates lots of cash for signing up more people (limited to the first... oh, 80 million) so the affiliate spammers are coming out of the woodwork taking the ridiculous promises of Juice and "boosting" them even higher. Hopefully, this is all just a demonstration of how ridiculous most affiliate programs are, but that seems unlikely.

Rally the Real Grassroots? Many Americans look to the Dean Campaign and MoveOn.org as a new kind of grassroots politics, but is there model really that unique? The Chrsitian Coalition has been organizing along similiar lines without the internet for years, and now the Bush Campaign is throwing their hat in the grassroots ring after sending out this e-mail: [text inside]

The smell of grass

The smell of grass 02/10/2004 01:34 PM

The most amazing thing about San Diego so far: the smell of grass. My nose had grown so accustomed to the scents of winter, that cold lifeless bitter slightly salty smell that's permeated New York City for the past three+ months. And then this morning, I stepped out of the hotel, ran down to a jogging path, and my nose was assaulted. Everywhere was the lushest, greenest grass, its scent permeating the air. A smell I take for granted in the summer suddenly seemed like a wondrous treat. Grass! Thick green grass! Who knew it could smell so beautiful?

Free registration required to read the story. “A new study shows that genes from genetically engineered grass can spread much farther than previously known, a finding that raises questions about the straying of other plants altered through biotechnology and that could hurt the efforts of two companies to win approval for the first bioengineered grass. The two companies, Monsanto and Scotts, have developed a strain of creeping bentgrass for use on golf courses that is…

CBS on "controversial"

CBS on "controversial" 02/10/2004 02:53 AM
A great letter to the editor in the Boston Globe re CBS' judgment about what sort of controvesy it should keep its viewers from. The site is flakey, so here's the text:
CBS's failure in judgment We Americans need to rethink whether CBS and its parent company Viacom should continue to be trusted to broadcast on our publicly owned airwaves. First, CBS turned down an ad by MoveOn.org discussing the budget deficit because it was too controversial for the Super Bowl. Then it proceeded to air an obscene halftime show produced by MTV. The show included Nelly urging women to take off all their clothes, and Janet Jackson performing with dancers wearing leather fetish outfits and lingerie, and then closing her performance by exposing her breast. MTV's website promised on Jan. 28 that Jackson's performance would include shocking moments, so it is clear that this was planned. CBS deliberately suppressed and censored political speech and public discourse, the core reason behind the First Amendment, yet saw fit to air sexually exploitive performances during a family event. We cannot tolerate such failures in judgment. Christine Bolzan, Beverly, MA

The Continental Features comics syndicate has announced that it will be dropping Doonesbury because the strip is "too controversial" (lately, Trudeau has been using the strip to criticise the Iraq War and Fox News).
The Continental head said he doesn't know exactly when "Doonesbury" will leave the package; he's currently polling clients to see if they want to replace it with "Agnes," "Get Fuzzy," "Pickles," "Zits," or another comic.
