Special BoingBoing report: Live from
SpaceShip One
06/17/2004 09:49 AMPaul G. Allen and Burt Rutan's
SpaceShip One is scheduled to launch
America's first Non-Government, privately funded manned space flight
next Monday. Alan Radecki, part of the ground crew stationed at
Mojave, is penning pre-flight updates and countdown info. Former
BoingBoing guestblogger Todd Lappin has arranged for those
first-person accounts to be blogged here.
Background: Link to Mojave airport site with launch info. Link to Rutan's press release on the June 21 launch. Link to Rutan's FAQ. And finally, Alan's first update
follows:
Starting today, I plan on sending out a daily update on the activities
surrounding the SpaceShipOne launch.
The flight is scheduled to commence at 0630 Monday 6/21, however that
is dependent on weather. Should there be a weather delay, such as
winds, the folks at Scaled plan on waiting and launching as soon as
the weather permits, even if it stretches to the next day.
The public will enter the airport from the main Airport Blvd
entrance off of Hwy 58. The airport will open at 3am, but it is pretty
much assumed around here that there will be so many people showing up
that the roads will be clogged. RVs will be permitted in the day
before, with reservations (661/824-2433). I know that there's already
89 coming, some of whom are NASA folks who are bringing a band and
everything. Regular vehicles will be charged $10 entrance fee (to help
mitigate the huge cost of security that the airport has to bear), and
I can't remember the RV cost...check mojaveairport.com for details.
Don't try to avoid the traffic by coming in the back entrances...these
are for VIPs with passes and tenants with ID badges.
There will be a TFR, and only aircraft with PPR numbers will be
permitted into the airspace, starting on Saturday, I believe. Again,
see mojaveairport.com for details. If you don't make it onto the
airport, you'll still see the firing...it'll be visible for miles.
(...)
I'll be here starting Sunday afternoon, sleeping in the Mercy
quarters. -- Alan
(
Thanks, Todd Lappin!)

Private Grid

08/28/2004 06:18 AMPrivate Gridhttp://www.private-grid.nl/Use a 10-node, 24Ghz machine for your own projects for free!
With the advent of broadband, GPRS, UMTS, the world is becoming a more
and more connected place.
Ubiquitous
computing is slowly permeating into normal day-to-day life. People
are getting used to 'always being connected', and share the resources
they have, sometimes with friends or acquintances, but mostly with
total strangers, often living great distances away. Most of the time,
the resources being shared are limited to audio- and/or video streams,
webcams and filesharing with P2P software. What with home- and office
systems becoming more and more powerful, high-performance computing
for the masses is becoming a reality. The
SETI@Home
statistics prove that the Internet can be used as a large
supercomputer. The idea of the private grid initiative is that people
start using the very respectable, often unused, computing resources
they have at their disposal for new and different projects they have
not thought of before. This site is provided as a service, so
academics and technical people can meet people who have ideas about
what they could or would do if they could unlock the resources they
have. On the other hand, it might help the sciences if they get
feedback from people that are not yet locked into a certain way of
thinking.This has been added to

International Private Law
International Private Law
07/16/2004 06:37 AMOne of the larger and more interesting questions arising in connection
with Creative Commons's global expansion is the question of whether
the various iCommons licences are internationally compatible.
The question arises because porting / transposing the CC licenses into
diffferent jurisdictions involves a process of both translation and
legal adapation. The latter is made necessary by the specific
requirements of the respective national legal orders, e.g. with regard
to language used or with regard to the particular limitations created
by droit d'auteur copyright regimes.
In this context, how can we best make sure the international versions
of the CC licenses are compatible with each other?
Part of our discussion at the Wissenschaftskolleg conference, held on
17 June in Berlin, focussed precisely on this question.
Here you'll find a talk given by Dr A. Metzger for more thoughts on
this.

Private Syndication
Private Syndication
02/01/2005 09:44 PMOver at the ZD BTL space, David Berlind
writes good stuff on something I’ve been
talking about for a long time, private syndication feeds. My favorite
examples have been feeds from my bank account or credit card or stock
portfolio, but David has another for people like EBay, who can no
longer email their customers because everyone receiving such an email
assumes it’s a phishing attempt (it usually is). David wonders if
existing RSS-based systems can scale up for mass one-to-one usage; the
answer is “yes, obviously”;
post-and-poll
(as in syndication) is mechanically simpler than store-and-forward (as
in email), it’ll scale just fine. One detail: I think that for this
kind of content-critical, all-business feed, Atom is a more attractive
choice than any of the RSS flavors.

FCC Proposes "Private Commons"
FCC Proposes "Private Commons"
09/03/2004 05:49 PMThe FCC is suggesting that spectrum licensees be allowed to let others
use their spectrum in a similar fashion to the unlicensed bands: The
only types of devices that would be allowed to operate in the "private
commons" would be peer-to-peer devices in a non-hierarchical network
that doesn't use the network of the licensee. According to Kevin
Warbach, a one-time counsel to the FCC and now an assistant professor
at The Wharton School, some experts say that if open spectrum is truly
beneficial, then licensees will create it. It seems there are a lot of
doubters that licensees would actually open their spectrum for this
kind of use, but perhaps a few innovative spectrum owners would give
it a try and find success. The FCC envisions that some current users
of unlicensed spectrum would benefit by negotiating with spectrum
owners to use their spectrum as a way to offer a service that is less
crowded and thus potentially more valuable than services that operate
in the unlicensed bands. It's the FCC's plan for avoiding the "tragedy
of the commons," where the shared item becomes so overused that it
loses its value....
