NewsFactor - At first blush, tape storage seems to be a relic from a bygone era, a medium that ought to be too slow and cumbersome to meet an enterprise's data storage needs. But the reality is that tape -- together with the critical business data that it stores -- is liable to outlive us all.

When the "dir" command is used to view the disk, the files are shown but not the total about of bytes used up or free. The cursor seems to stop before this infomation is shown. Could it be that the FAT table has been damaged.

Okay, let me get this straight... My GMail account is good for 1GB. I could probably use some of my next invites to get myself a few more accounts, let's say 4. It seems reasonable. That's 5GB of e-mail storage. My Yahoo Mail Plus account has 2GB of storage (employee perk). I could add a few more "normal" Y! Mail accounts at 100MB each. 10 would get me another gig, bringing my Yahoo total to 3GB and my grand total...

The Everio GZ-MC500E allows the user to easily swap out the existing 4GB Microdrive card making future upgrades simple and also offers myriad quality settings to increase recording time from its default 60 minutes (near-DVD-quality) to as many as 5 hours of video. The infoSync piece has more on their personal experience with the $1,800 device, but overall their impressions were that it looks to be quite the camcorder. It also includes a separate SD/MMC card slot and supports PictBridge for direct-to-printer connectivity. JVC says it will launch sometime this month.

i-Bead 1000 1.5GB Hard Disk Player 07/09/2004 01:27 PM

ibead_1000.jpg imageSouth Korean firm i-Bead is releasing a new 1.5 gigabyte hard disk player with a built-in 65k-color screen. Although there's no word on price yet, the feature set looks nice, with a built-in FM tuner and recorder, line-in recording, text viewing (something that is missing from way too many players), and USB 2.0, as well as a variety of major audio formats. And the best news? It looks like the i-Bead 1000 will be making it to Europe and the US; previous i-Bead players have been Asia-only.

Hard disk heads can be polished with
green tea
04/27/2004 04:11 PM
Green tea is an environmentally sound substitute for diamond polishing compound used in the preparation of super-smooth hard-disk read-write heads.
John Lombardi, at Ventana Research based in Tuscon, Arizona in the US, suspected that green tea might also provide be an effective compound for polishing magnetic read-write heads. This was because tannin, a chemical that gives tea and coffee a bitter taste, binds to certain ceramic and metal materials. It is this quality that causes it to stain teapots and mugs...
