No doubt about it, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is focusing on security, but his message this week was about the social responsibility that we all have in keeping our computers and networks safe.

According to DigiTimes, Acer and Microsoft will focus their tablet PC co-marketing efforts this year on China and Germany, a move that both significantly narrows Acer's earlier projected reach and expands it into relatively new territory. DigiTimes cites the Chinese-language Economic Daily News as its source on the development and says the strategy was finalized during a meeting of top executives from the two companies held in Taipei last week.

Patent-scammers use bad analogies to

Patent-scammers use bad analogies to
defend worse business practices
07/14/2004 05:06 AM
My cow-orker Jason Schultz is running EFF's patent-busting project, and high on his list of damaging Internet patents is Acacia Research's patent on streaming media. Acacia has pursued this patent by targetting porn companies and extracting settlements in order to fund a war-chest that it is now using to sue bigger media entities -- presumably this trail ends with orgs like the BBC, CBC, and Live365.

Adult Video News (AVN) interviewed Jason and some of the Acacia people about the ongoing work to bust the patent, and the Acacia people busted out this bizarre analogy about stealing SUVs. Jason's repsonse was classic:

Acacia executive vice president Robert Berman said he found it interesting that the EFF is interested in preserving some rights, like free speech, while being willing to ignore others, like property rights... "For example, if someone broke into your garage and stole your SUV, and put a speaker on the top, and was driving around the neighborhood making some political statement, trying to get your SUV back wouldn't be trying to stifle free speech, it would be you trying to get your property back. If somebody is using your property, you have a right to stop them or receive a license or receive royalties..."

"There's no question now that an SUV in your garage is something you own. But here there's a real question as to whether Acacia actually invented anything new or simply is claiming monopoly on technology that millions of people use every day to express themselves," Schultz told AVNOnline.com.

"And the other thing is, I don't have to break into your garage to steal your SUV to express myself in the physical world. But I can't think of a modern Website, especially news Websites, that don't depend on streaming some kind of audio or video to express themselves on the Web. It has become a fundamental part of free expression online," he continued. "And I would say it has become the predominant method for artists and news organizations to connect to their audiences. [Acacia] doesn't want to own just the SUV, [they] want to own every single automobile and stereo system in the world, to use [their] contorted analogy."

We all know that there are many, many version of Windows being used around the world that are not legit. But the worst thing you could do is refuse to update security holes or fixes because they are not legit. That’s what Microsoft tends to do later this year. All I can say is that anyone using a pirated Windows version needs to have the same security updates as everyone else or we will all suffer from more trojans, viruses, DOS attacks and slow downs on the internet. Making Microsoft a niche player 08/30/2004 06:46 AM
Novell engineer and manager Allison Singh recently predicted in an Africa-based tectonic magazine article that Windows will become a niche operating system, replaced by Linux as the new standard. A gestalt of recent trends, events, and stories should tell you that this prediction is right on the money. A gestalt, by the way, is a perception or conclusion that goes beyond the sum of its parts. Here are three of the many parts that comprise the gestalt.

Microsoft Making Encarta Into Wikicarta?
Not Quite
04/18/2005 06:48 PM
Microsoft's Encarta encyclopedia project often seems to be forgotten in all of the various arguments over Wikipedia, but it appears that they're feeling a bit of the Wikipedia-induced heat. They're going to now make it easier for people to suggest changes to Encarta entries, if they feel they're wrong. Of course, those changes will still be reviewed by an editor, so it's not really wiki-like at all -- but that won't stop the press from making the connection. It's just that Encarta is making the "feedback" functionality a little more prominent and hoping that this allows them to catch some of the Wikipedia hype wave.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-050:
Vulnerability in Microsoft Word and
Microsoft Excel Could Allow Arbitrary
Code to Run (831527)
11/13/2003 12:36 AM
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word that could allow malicious code execution. This vulnerability exists due to to the way Word checks the length of a data value (Macro names) embedded in a document. If a specially crafted document were to be opened it could overflow a data value in Word and allow arbitrary code to be executed. If successfully exploited, an attacker could then take the same actions as the user had permissions to carry out, such as adding, changing or deleting data or files, communicating with a web site or formatting the hard drive.

Microsoft rumored to be making major
Podcasting announcement at Gnomedex
06/06/2005 12:01 AM

A little bird told me tonight that their is major rumors being spread by the Microsoft elite that their will be a major podcast related announcement by Microsoft and maybe even Bill Gates himself at Gnomedex.

Keep the tips coming people and if this one proves to be true, I am going to be in the Gnomedex house watching it go down live. I may even work a deal with some of TechPodcasts.com partners to make that event a live one!

This is going to be a great event and I even hear Google is putting on a party so if all goes well we will get to put a microphone in front of some important people. Plus I am taking bunch of books to give away. If your going to be at Gnomedex lets hook up the night before as I fly in the day before the event kicks off.

Todd..

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-025:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet
Explorer (867801)
08/02/2004 01:10 AM
This update resolves several newly discovered public vulnerabilities. Each vulnerability is documented in this bulletin in its own Vulnerability Details section. If a user is logged on with administrative privileges, an attacker who successfully exploited the most severe of these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts with full privileges. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer privileges on the system would be at less risk than users who operate with administrative privileges. Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update immediately.
