Patenting Punctuation (Ernest Miller)

Well, it seems that someone has patented some new forms of punctuation: WIPO Patent Publication No. WO9219458:

Using two new punctuation marks, the question comma and the exclamation comma: and respectively, inquisitiveness and exclamation may be expressed within a written sentence structure, so that thoughts may be more easily and clearly conveyed to readers. The new punctuation marks are for use within a written sentence between words as a comma, but with more feeling or inquisitiveness.Seems that this is sort of an addition to the faddish punctuation known as the Interrobang.via I/P Updates

This reminds me a bit of when Despair, Inc. trademarked the frowny emoticon ":-("

The Eternal Appeal of Punctuation

The Eternal Appeal of Punctuation 12/19/2003 11:35 AM
Punk-Tuation: Is It The New Anarchy Or Boring Old Fascism All Over Again? How anal serious about apostrophes are you? Just how far would you go for a perfect semi-colon? Do you regularly reach for heart pills before you read MetaFilter? Take comfort in this: Lynne Trusse's wildly popular Eats Shoots And Leaves is this year's surprise bestseller in Britain. And I've limited myself to the MeFi-adored Guardian, just to make my (as it were) point. So... how important is punctuation to you? My own suspicion is that punctuation is the new spelling. It is important. (And, lest this seem carefree and frivolous, let me confess right away that MetaFilter may well be the worst offender, in this regard, ever to have blessedly existed.)

Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero
Tolerance Approach to Punctuation
04/13/2004 06:16 PM
My friend Brian mentioned "Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation" as something that ought to be just my cup of tea--my cup being an afternoon meandering The Chicago Manual of Style, that is.
A panda walked into a cafe. He ordered a sandwich, ate it, then pulled out a gun and shot the waiter. 'Why?' groaned the injured man. The panda shrugged, tossed him a badly punctuated wildlife manual and walked out. And sure enough, when the waiter consulted the book, he found an explanation. 'Panda,' ran the entry for his assailant. 'Large black and white mammal native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves.'
There's examples galore of wounded, contortion's of English grammer, assaulting the sense's of those with weaker stomach's for such grammatic assaults as me. And don't get me started on spurious punctuation--I've "NO CHECKS" PLEASE signs and the like to put you off your dinner. I could go on, excetera, excetera, but I got to run if I'm to make the Starbucks' in time for a quick expresso before closing.

IBM Believes In Spam For A Spam
Vigilante Revenge
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
It seems that larger companies are really getting pissed off at spammers these days. While going out and attacking spammers used to be more limited to net.vigilantes, some well known companies have been taking stronger approaches to fighting spam lately. A few months back there was Lycos ' plan to let anyone download a screensaver that would launch distributed denial of service attacks on spammers. While Lycos claimed it wouldn't take anyone offline, it wasn't long before that was proven false. Next up on the list is IBM, whose latest anti-spam offering will send data right back at spamming machines in an effort to slow them down. It's not quite a distributed denial of service attack -- it's more like a centralized one. It's sort of one step up beyond greyl isting which just slows down the spam. Instead, this tries to slow down the computer sending the spam. Again, this leaves IBM open to charges of hitting back too hard -- especially if innocent sites get taken offline in the process. Still, when large companies like IBM start offering products like this, you know that people are getting fed up.

I taped a segment for VH1's new series "The Best Week Ever" a couple of days ago. I took at look at the VH1 website a moment ago, and the topics I talked about are listed for tonight's show. So I'm guessing that, if I didn't suck, I'll be on at 11PM EST on VH1. Updated: Well, none of my stuff made it. Maybe I'll get another chance next week -- there are a few topics we talked about that weren't on this episode. If anyone needs me, I'll be crossing my fingers. By the way, how cool is it that Chris Jericho is so damn funny? One More Update: I just heard from a producer at VH1. He told me that there were some issues, unrelated to me, that prevented my stuff from getting on this week. He says there's a good chance it will happen next week, so be sure to tune in then! I promised an increase of 5 viewers, you guys. Don't make me look bad.
