  • Given the White House statements that all of Bush's records had already been made public, this is an, ahem, interesting new development. But are you really surprised? Me, neither.

airconditioned_jacket-thumb.jpg imageYou know, you can find the damndest things when you clean out your email, like perhaps an air conditioned jacket from Japanese firm PC2B. It keeps you cool and makes you look like a bloated marshmallow man all at once. Perhaps you could just, you know, take off the jacket.

Oh, and if you sent me email, and it was super important and I didn't respond and now you hate me, well, send it again.

How Much Technology Is In Your Jacket? 12/19/2004 03:47 PM
Despite them being around for a while, I saw a SCOTTe-VEST jacket for the first time last night, as the owner proudly showed off the 50,000 (give or take...) or so different pockets and conduits for electronics equipment stashed away in the jacket. Suddenly, my coat, with its wimpy two pockets (but deep ones for holding lots of gadgets!), seemed sort of weak. USA Today is running an article about all of these high tech jackets, many of which are designed for winter sports. What seems most interesting, however, is wondering if the rise of such "smart clothing" will help extend the usefulness of certain gadgets. People complain that screens on PDAs are too small, but if you could build a larger screen into your sleeve and have it communicate with your PDA/phone, would that get it more use? Or, are people not really that interested in such device "extenders" when they can only be used when the weather cooperates?

    Neuromancer jacket-quote 06/16/2004 10:20 AM
I'm bursting with pride over something that I had to share: I've been asked for a jacket-flap quote for the upcoming 20th Anniversary Edition of William Gibson's Neuromancer, which Ace will publish next autumn. I've had some amazing honors in my career, but this takes the cake. I've only met Gibson a couple of times, but on both occasions I was struck by his generosity and wit.

Here's the quote I gave to Ace:

"Neuromancer didn't predict the future. Neuromancer *created* the future. If you would understand the past twenty years' technological advance and retreat, this book is required reading. I re-read it every year, just to get an edge on the year that's coming, and to glory in Gibson's prose and cunning artifice."

trv820e340.jpg imageDan over at Woomba has taken up a cause that is very near and dear to my heart: encouraging owners of Sony cameras and camcorders to take off those goddamn spec stickers from their cameras. They are there to tell you about the camera you have purchased, like the sticker in a car window, and are meant to be removed at time of purchase. If you must have a sticker, may I suggest something a little more personal, like My Little Pony or an ironic gold-foil trucker lady silhouette? Both are awful, of course, but at least you wouldn't be walking around as the gadget equivalent of Minnie Pearl.

Sorry Mom, but somebody had to say it.

    Bumper Sticker of the Year

Bumper Sticker of the Year 04/14/2004 05:13 AM
I've never understood why a large part of our culture got more upset over a President lying about sexual peccadillos and being unfaithful to his spouse than it gets about a President lying to millions of citizens, exploiting a national tragedy for political gain, and getting hundreds of Americans and thousands of Iraqis killed. Today in Berkeley, I saw this eloquently summed up on a bumper sticker: When Clinton lied, nobody died. Even if their commander in chief refuses to honor them, I salute and honor the fallen among America's soldiers who were sent to die under false pretenses, as well as the poor Iraqis, most of whom were killed only because they got caught in the cross-fire between the best armed military in the world and the Iraqis fighting the occupation. Amazing to think that more Iraqi civilians have died from American violence in Iraq than Americans died on 9-11....

mp3blueJacket.jpg imageIs it a bad sign when a company announces an electronic jacket that is aimed at "technologically progressive, fashion-conscious men" and then doesn't put up a good picture of the jacket on its website? If the 'mp3blue' coat from Bavarian clothes-haus Rosner were the first garment to incorporate a textile control pad on the a sleeve to control an MP3 player, we might be able to excuse them for making something so ugly as to be unwearable. As it stands, even a built-in Bluetooth interface for connecting to mobile phones isn't going to sell a $730 jacket if it makes you look like a total dweeb. (Thanks, Tim!)

A bumper sticker? It can't be. Who would care about a bumper sticker? As I sat across the table from three stoic Secret Service agents, I started to think about the country I live in. We were always told growing up that what separated America from everywhere else is the First Amendment and it's protection of free speech. But these agents painted a very different picture. They said that unnamed Republican operatives had removed my friends and me from a meeting with the President for a slogan on my friend's car.

Motorola's Big Plan: Link Your Phone To
    Your Ski Jacket?
    01/04/2005 03:17 PM
What is it with high tech jackets? For years, we've had various stories about high tech jackets with all sorts of electronics built in. The latest is Motorola's effort at becoming cool with the younger generation. They've decided to team up with Burton to build a Bluetooth-enabled ski jacket, with special pockets for a phone and an MP3 player, along with controls on the sleeve and speakers in the hood. Motorola says it's just the start of their (I'm paraphrasing) "no, really, we think we're cool" marketing strategy that will involve plenty of other accessories linked up to Motorola phones. Of course, it makes you wonder why these accessories need to work strictly with Motorola. If they're just using Bluetooth, couldn't you just as easily substitute another Bluetooth phone for the Motorola one -- meaning that other providers could easily take advantage of all this development effort?
