PKS 0.9.6 released 02/07/2003 09:40 AM
PKS is an OpenPGP Public Key Server. It allows users to store and lookup public keys from the server's database. It can also synchronize with other servers. This release is intended to be a solid, stable bugfix and feature upgrade to 0.9.5. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I'd like to announce that PKS 0.9.6 has been released! The file can be downloaded from the SourceForge Download Area for the "pks" project. (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=61738) 19427b543972c23fbc1c167d5408d3a9 *pks-0.9.6.tar.gz I just uploaded the tarball to SourceForge, so don't be surprised if it isn't available on SF mirrors yet. See the release notes (NEWS file) and ChangeLog for more information on the changes since 0.9.5. BE SURE TO READ THE UPGRADING FILE! IMPORTANT NOTES FOR INSTALLATION: * READ THE UPGRADING FILE! The database format has changed slightly, and backwards compatibility is NOT the default. * If you want to be able to add keys via HTTP, make sure to uncomment this line in your pksd.conf: www_readonly 0 * If you want to be able to download keys, make sure to uncomment max_reply_keys. Also, you'll probably want to change this from -1 (unlimited) to a more sane value. * BSD (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD): PKS should work on these platforms. However, no current ports of PKS exist. (FreeBSD's and NetBSD's ports of pks-0.9.4 should NOT be used for security reasons.) * Debian Linux users: The Debian package should catch up to pks-0.9.6 very shortly. * RedHat Linux users: Running "rpm -ta pks-0.9.6.tar.gz" should build you the required RPMs. This release is intended to be a solid, stable bugfix and feature upgrade to 0.9.5. Bug reports and patches are always welcome. Delicious Eye Candy

Delicious Eye Candy 08/27/2004 01:33 PM

xorg-translucent.jpgX.Org is set to release a new version of their X11 server tomorrow (X11 is the system that drives the GUI desktop on Linux and other UNIX systems). The notable part of this release will be extensions to the X protocol that will allow more flexibility in the compositing of windows. This allows for drop shadows on windows, translucent windows, and other visual effects (The screenshot at right is a bit small, but it shows a video playing at 50% transparency with a browser behind). Linux-Gamers.Net has the full scoop:

Another useful feature is the inclusion of the new XDamage extension. Monitoring the regions affected by rendering has wide-spread use, from VNC-like systems scraping the screen to screen magnifying applications designed to aid users with limited visual acuity. The DAMAGE extension is designed to make such applications reasonably efficient in the face of server-client latency.

This all seems a bit technical, I know, but it will mean a more 'Mac-like' visual experience for Linux desktops, and more efficient rendering. The screenshots look great. Windows users, don't worry. I'm sure Longhorn will be along eventually. Right? =)

History of candy bar wrappers

History of candy bar wrappers 03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Cory Doctorow: This Syracuse University thesis on the history of candy bar wrappers is a very breezy work for an academic paper -- insightful and interesting history of the evolution of an object whose ubiquity has rendered it invisible to our modern eyes. Interesting to think that there was a time when the idea of a candy bar wrapper was novel.
Candy wrappers are designed to communicate with consumers, - even though the communication may often be one-way. The bright colors, shiny paper and animated logos speak to our culture in the most friendly and trusting tones. We know that each wrapper holds the promise of something good - at least as good as Grandma used to make.

Just the opposite, in fact. For $184 you get a low-power computer running the Linux 2.6.0 kernel with webserver and remote login and power management circuity on-board. Throw a solar cell onto this little bad boy and you could do all sorts of fun things, like embedding a permanent webserver into a building, controlling a swarm of wireless robots, or developing the first Bluetooth-enabled loaf of bread. At just 8.3 by 3.6 centimeters, the 200ax-bt still manages to pack in USB, serial, sound, and LCD controller - now with AC adapter!

Bill Wilson's little "single process stack of system monitors" known as GKrellM has become so popular some refer to it (or just use it) as geek eye-candy rather than as the very nice performance monitoring tool that it is. In fact, GKrellM is so popular it may have more plugins than other projects have users. Actually, I think it's not so much that GKrellM has morphed itself into eye-candy so much as that since the very beginning it's been designed as a Swiss Army knife kind of utility.
