Pentagon Can't Even Keep Track Of The
Systems That Keep Track Of Stuff
07/08/2004 12:33 PM
The Pentagon certainly isn't known for efficiency in their business processes, and no one ever said they needed to be run in the same manner as a profitable business, but the fact that they can't even track the thousands of different databases and logistics systems that are supposed to keep track of all of their purchases and assets is a bit worrisome. At the very least it's a huge recipe for fraud, with plenty of already greedy enough defense contractors clearly abusing the system for great profit to themselves -- at the expense of our own tax dollars.

Fugitive Documents Evade Federal Depositories
http://www.fcw.com/fcw/articles/2004/0621/pol-crisis-06-21-04.asp

The Federal Depository Library Program is losing the race to keep up with cataloging and preserving access to Web-only government documents. "This is not a problem; this is a crisis," says Daniel Greenstein, head of the California Digital Library, which serves the 10 libraries in the University of California system. To capture those missing documents, known as fugitive documents, the Government Printing Office is contemplating using Web-harvesting technologies, but GPO officials acknowledge that Web-crawler and datamining technologies might prove inadequate for rounding up much of the information the government publishes online. Greenstein notes that while Web-crawlers are fairly good at capturing documents from the Web's surface, they miss much of the information on the so-called Deep Web, where databases and dynamic Web pages reside. A recent California Digital Library study found that about 85% of the Deep Web is in the .gov domain. GPO officials have enlisted the help of the University of North Texas Libraries to maintain a collection of electronic documents known as the Cyber Cemetery, but they acknowledge they have no idea how many fugitive documents they're missing. "If we knew where they were to count them, then they wouldn't be fugitive," says Judith Russell, superintendent of documents. But other institutions, such as the California Digital Library, say they can't wait for the government to solve the problem and are committing staff and funding to maintain their electronic collections of government information. Google Background Check On Date Catches

Thanks to John for submitting this story about just how useful it might be to Google your dates. Of course, this has been known for years. It's been more than three years since we first posted stories about Googl ing dates as a poor man's background check. While, for most people, it's just an amusing and quick way to find out a little more about the person you're meeting up with, sometimes you can turn up quite a bit. In this case, a quick Googling turned up the fact that the guy a woman was about to meet was a wanted fugitive who had eluded authorities for over a year. Once again, it appears that Google really is your permanent record. Of course, you have to wonder... if you're a fugitive with the FBI trying to track you down, why are you going to use your real name on a date?

Looks like there is a ray of light for all the collectors that were left in the dark when the much anticipated Fan Choice Ephant Mon figure slipped away unexpectedly from shelves across the planet. Seems that everything Hasbro has told us about its availability was true, as it is now showing up in large quantities at KB Toy stores all over the US with the ridiculously low price of $2.99 each! Considering the demand for this figure, we encourage all collectors to adhere to the Collect To Collect Code Of Honor, and hopefully this time around every collector who needs this figure will be able to get it without supporting scalpers.

Freedom Elusive For On-The-Road Jobs

Freedom Elusive For On-The-Road Jobs 12/30/2004 05:04 AM
This isn't surprising -- nor particularly new -- but now it seems like almost every company that involves having drivers out on the road is gravitating towards using GPS systems to monitor where their employees are and what they're doing. While it may cut down on slackers and those who are goofing off, it also has many unintended consequences, such as workers feeling like their bosses can't trust them. It also makes them increasingly nervous and anxious. One driver notes that he gets antsy if workers where he buys lunch are slow because he knows he's being watched and not moving. While there are plenty of good reasons to track where drivers are, it seems like companies employing this type of technology might want to consider those unintended consequences as well, and think about ways to minimize the negative ones.
