Overzealous Decluttering Efforts

Spring Cleaning is a good choice for managing the digital junk you've created, such as documents and QuickTime movies. But some of Spring Cleaning's features make it potentially dangerous for people who may not know what they're deleting. As for Internet Cleanup, if you use Internet Explorer, you may find it useful. Fans of other browsers should look elsewhere. By T. Patrick Henebry (Macworld via MyAppleMenu)

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom

Tow Truck Drivers Push Cars into
Tow-Away Zone then hold cars for ransom
03/22/2005 04:59 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Tian says: "On March 7th, I took photos of a tow truck driver that damages a vehicle then tries to get away in Phoenix.

Sunday night (March 20th), Phoenix news channel 15 used a bait car and discovered that local tow truck company(s) would actually push cars into tow-away zone first, then held the cars as "hostages" for ransom."

I just watched it. The TV crew set up a white SUV as a bait car, and parked it legally. Time and time again, tow trucks would push the car into a red zone, snap a photo, and tow it away. Of course, when the TV crew showed the owner of the tow truck company how his drivers had pushed the car into the red lane, the owner denied responsibility. "I didn't push it," he said.

Arizona lawmakers have been half-heartedly writing legislation to stop this (isn't it illegal to do this already) but the tow truck has so far been able to convince them not to ruin the good thing they've got going. Link to RealMedia file. The segment starts about 20:15 into the broadcast.

Self-cleaning nanofabric

Self-cleaning nanofabric 07/23/2004 02:41 PM
CNN reports on the recently-announced invention of self-cleaning nano-coated fabric that's a leap beyond stain-resistant Dockers. The materials scientists at Hong Kong Polytechnic University coated cotton with nanoparticles of titanium dioxide. When subjected to ultraviolet light, the titanium dioxide produces an oxidizing agent that can break down dirt and other organic substances. According to researcher Walid A. Daoud, several companies have already come knocking.
"(The fabric will be useful for) military people, or travelers, people who go hiking, who don't have a lot of water and time to wash their clothes," he said. "This is a very good idea because then if the clothes get dirty, the dirt can be decomposed by the fabric itself. So after a few days in the sunshine, or even indoor light, the dirt will disappear."
As both BioED Online and CNN point out, the technology was prophesized in the 1951 film The Man in the White Suit starring Alec Guinness. Link< /a>

Cleaning House

Cleaning House 01/06/2005 05:35 PM
In a secret ballot Wednesday afternoon, the House Republican leadership ousted Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Christopher Smith, R-N.J., and replaced him with Rep. Steve Buyer of Indiana. At first glance, dumping Smith in favor of one of his colleagues might seem out of keeping for the Republicans, who normally avoid infighting. But Wednesday's vote wasn't so much a fight as a takedown.

Self-Cleaning Glass

Self-Cleaning Glass 06/08/2004 09:07 AM

activ_glass.jpg LogoThey've been developing it for years, so it's good news to see that the Pilkington Activ glass -- the self-cleaning "eco glass" coated with a film of titanium dioxide -- is finally being put to use in commercial development. If you hadn't see it before, the Activ glass has two advantages over normal glass: the first is the photocatalytic effect that reacts to sunlight to break down organic dirt, and the second is an enhanced hydrophilic tendency of water running on the glass to form sheets instead of droplets (like Rain-X, for instance). The combination of the two effects means that every time it rains (as I hear it does a lot in UK, where the technology was developed), the outside of the windows clean themselves.

Ever since Windows NT was first released (strangely enough as Version 3.5 - Microsoft never did get the hang of proper numbering), NetWare aficionados have swapped stories about uptime - how long a server goes between bootups. Windows servers used to have uptime numbers that were measured in hours or days, while NetWare uptime was measured in months or even years. With older versions of NT, starting or stopping a service often meant you needed to reboot while recent versions of NetWare haven't needed a reboot even to upgrade the operating system.

Cleaning Word HTML

Cleaning Word HTML 11/10/2003 11:12 PM

I took a weekend off from scowling and screaming at the content management system that refuses to be born in order to luxuriate in code that has to work on only one server, and has to be legible only to me. The bliss, I tell you, the bliss!

The result is a rather if-I-may skookum rewrite of this site’s Word HTML Cleaner. The markup it now produces is tidier and easier to read, and the selection of tags and attributes that make it through the cleaning process is somewhat more sensible.

Access to the Word Cleaner continues to be free for files up to 20 kilobytes, though I’ve added an option to subscribe at the ROCK BOTTOM INTRODUCTORY PRICE of $20 per year.

Subscribers can, in addition to working with documents larger than 20 Kb, customise how the cleaner deals with tag attributes, as well as have access to other future improvements. Thanks to a bit of hacking through Paypal’s rather suave Instant Payment Notification API, access to the Word cleaner’s new bells and whistles is nearly instant.

Whether this will slow down the instances of people firing up 2 megabyte quarterly reports overflowing with WordArt and Excel charts – then sniffily demanding why this free service didn’t work (‘oh was I supposed to save it as HTML?’) – remains to be seen.

Feel like doing a little spring cleaning? Remember that horrid olestra stuff that gave you "leakage"? Or didn't, because you stuck to the fatty doritos because of the diarrhea stories? Apparently there's some evidence that it clears a series of toxins, including dioxin, from the bloodstream. Would've come in handy for Yushenko. Via Number One Hit Song.

Browser cache files, duplicate documents, and unneeded programs waste space, and Spring Cleaning 6.0 and Internet Cleanup 1.0, both from Aladdin Systems, offer ways to sort through your files and toss the trash. Spring Cleaning can find and remove almost any file, while Internet Cleanup specializes in removing browser-related files and blocking pop-up browser windows. These tools are handy starting points for cleaning up your machine, but be sure to study the file list before you press delete -- both programs occasionally target needed files.

air_cleaning_window_fan.jpg imageThese fans may not be new -- I mean, it's a fan -- but I just noticed them for the first time today. The Hammacher Schlemmer Air-Cleaning Windows Fan is just a box fan, basically, except on the intake side (or "back") is a pleated cotton/poly filter that also happens to be impregnated with baking soda to neutralize odors. Unfortunately it shares the curse of all air cleaners -- the fan is only $50, but the three-month filters are $40 each.

Can you tell it's hot in our neck of the woods today?
