I Am an Economic Girlie-Man

I Am an Economic Girlie-Man 09/01/2004 05:22 PM
California's governor had some words for those who are pessimistic about the economy. Right here, man.

Is the economic drought over?

Is the economic drought over? 03/06/2004 01:57 AM
I've spent a bit of time over the last two years searching through my cobweb shrouded memories of the lectures of one of the best teachers I ever had and trying read the entrails of the economy and predict when the hi-tech rebound would start, all without success. We finally shut down our company last year, and I have been parenting, travelling, writing and doing a bit of consulting since. Until recently, the Bay Area economy and the high-tech economy seemed mired in the doldrums. However, recently my personal economic barometer has suddenly moved from calm to hurricane. Last week I got two phone calls from old colleagues about jobs, as well as a couple of calls from recruiters, something that used to be an almost daily nuisance, then didn't happen at all for two years. This week I have 3 meetings to discuss employment opportunities, one that I sought out, the two others that sought me out. I certainly hope that this is a sign of things to come for the Bay Area economy and hi-tech. As Glenn Fleishman once said, "Whenever I get busy, my blog dwindles. You can practically draw a revenue/work graph line against frequency of posts. ... If you don't hear much from me, congratulate me. I must be doing well. " To complete the parade of cliches, I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch, but I expect that postings will be light in the immediate future, and I hope they will continue to be light for a while....

Centre for Economic Performance

Centre for Economic Performance 06/09/2004 05:41 AM
Centre for Economic Performance
http://cep.lse.ac.uk/

Established by the Economic and Social Research Council in 1990, the Centre for Economic Performance CEP at the London School of Economics and Political Science is one of the most prominent and established economic research groups in Europe. By focusing on the major links between globalization, technology and institutions, the CEP studies the determinants of economic performance at the level of the company, the nation, and the global economy. Broadly, CEP's research programs are divided into five groups that include research into labor markets, technology and growth, and education and skills. From the prodigious site, visitors can read about CEP In the News, learn about the various staff members' research areas of expertise, and browse their related publications (including occasional papers, working papers, and the like) back to 1990. Overall, this site will merit more than one visit, as it will be of substantial interest to persons interested in the intersections between economics, education, and globalization, to name but a few of the topical areas covered under the remit of the CEP. This will be added to Business Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide. [From The Scout Report, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003.http://scout.wisc.edu/]
