I'm really bummed, because the folks at the I2 institute have got a great Wireless program going on in conjunction with SXSW, and there's a teriffic set of blog and other social software panels and talks as well. SXSW so farSXSW so far 03/13/2003 10:22 AM Although the crowds seem smaller, or maybe there are just so many film people around, SXSW is fun this year. My panel went ok today, and I'm looking forward to relaxing the rest of my time here. One thing has really been driven home by the availability and ubiquity of hacking tools: the downside of wireless is (un)security. I've been saying this since last year's E-Tech conference, but as long as Apple is pimping their airports and the wonders of wireless they really should have an "iSecure" app that makes ssh tunneling painless and easy. A few months ago I spent an entire saturday afternoon writing scripts to auto-login to my email server through a tunnel, and that was just email. Secure web browsing is something else entirely, and the services of things like anonymizer look attractive as a total package (but they're still a pain in the ass to setup). Ideally, it should be entirely transparent, painless, and easy to setup and use a secure tunnel. Apple could even tie a service into their iTools accounts. I'd be happy to pay $50 a year for encrypted email and web traffic (with an easy interface to establish the connection). Choice SxSW quotesChoice SxSW quotes 03/19/2005 02:35 AM My American adventure is ongoing; I'm still in Austin at the moment, but I'll be off to Washington D.C. in a few days and there's a small chance I'll get there via Dallas. This doesn't leave much opportunity for online shenanigans, but there were a few things from SxSW that really needed a mention. The conference, as ever, was awesome - if not for the panels then certainly for the socialising. If anything I stretched myself too thin this year trying to keep up with the Brit Pack, the WaSP crew, some ex-colleagues from Lawrence and the people I met in San Francisco back in May. I met a lot of new people this year as well. Since David Nunez had pointed out that "what do you do?" was a bit of a dull opening question (not to mention a conversation killer for people who dislike their job) I stuck with "So what are you excited about?" instead. It worked pretty well - I got a whole bunch of great answers, with the most random probably coming from the guy who was excited about mopeds (it turned out he runs the world's number one moped site). The most entertaining panel by far was the Home Star Runner one, in which the Brothers Chaps finally revealed the secret to their animation success: motion capture! I'll have to post a few pictures once I get back on a high speed 'net connection; suffice to say the constant laughter from the room was heard throughout the convention center. You'll find near-transcripts and commentary. Wow. Here and here.... SXSW 2005 adventuresSXSW 2005 adventures 03/19/2005 02:37 AM I'm on the plane back to NYC from what was my fifth SXSW. I hadn't been for a couple of years and it was good (and a little weird) to be back. Some thoughts, in rough chronological order: Best panels I attended: tie between Jason Fried's How to Make Big Things Happen with Small Teams and Malcolm Gladwell's keynote. Having read Blink and seen him speak on it twice before, there was nothing much new in Malcolm's talk, but he's a fantastic speaker...knows his shit cold, didn't utter a single "um" or "like", could make the phone book seem interesting, but doesn't have to caper about the stage to be compelling. Everyone was nice. Well, there was that one guy who was an asshole, but I think everyone pretty much ignored him. But everyone else, so nice to get to meet you or see you again. Overheard in the hallway: "no woman who knows that much about CSS should be that good looking", "here's how I met Marc Canter for the first time: I'm standing outside at a conference, he comes up beside me and farts", "I have no idea who you are", "surf the glue", "no one will get naked in the hot tub with me", and "Ima gine Malcolm Gladwell...with breasts. That's how busy it will be." My two panels sandwiched the keynote conversation between Bruce Sterling and Alex Steffen, so I was only able to catch about 20 minutes of it. But that was long enough to hear Bruce talking about smoking his shoes. LOL for reals.
Bruce Sterling's not-house party didn't really get crackin' until the geeks descended on the Zoob toys. The photo evidence pretty much speaks for itself here. Ben Brown, because he asked me to. Many, many times. Ben, I expect you to comply with the terms of the restraining order from this point forward. And finally, I'm at the airport ready to leave just after getting through security and I hear, "your attention please, Jason Kottke to security check 3 for a lost item pickup". Bag, check; rollie, check; coat, check; phone and wallet, safely stowed in the zipper pocket of my bag. What the heck could they have found and how on earth do they know it's mine? I zipped over the security check point and was waved over by a friendly/stern police officer. "You Jason?" "Yep." He holds up my wallet, which I swear on a stack of The Origin of Species was in my bag. "Holy crap," I said. "And that's not the worst part," he says with the most serious look I've ever seen on anyone's face. Uh oh, I feel a full body cavity search coming on. He pulls out my social security card and lectures me for two minutes on how I shouldn't be carrying it because it's all someone needs to steal my identity. Relieved that I'm not about to be hauled into a tiny windowless room for interrogation, I'm sort of chuckling at this point, which he takes to mean I don't believe him about the SS card. "Do you see me looking you right in the eye, son? That's how serious I am about this." Mr. Sir, as soon as I'm home, I'm taking my SS card out of my wallet and putting it in the safest place I can...right after I change into some clean underwear. But this year's SXSW Interactive Festival is enough to get me out of the house. With panels by well-known web luminaries such as Jeffrey Zeldman, Eric Meyer and Douglas Bowman, SXSW promises to be a very informative event. Oh, and I'm also going because I'll be among the panelists on the "Blogging for Business" session :) I think the last time I appeared in front a large crowd was when I was born, and I'm hoping this will be slightly less traumatic for me. Esme Vos is also on the panel, from MuniWireless.com, and we should have a rip, and might I add, roaring time. The interactive part of the event runs March 11 to 15; the overall event is from March 11 to 20.... SXSW award finalist .. anything sxsw.com/interactive/web_awards/finalists Austin Project Featured at SXSWAustin Project Featured at SXSW 03/06/2004 01:49 AM The Austin Chronicle takes a look at the Austin Wireless City Project's initiatives around the SXSW music festival, which happens next weekend: The project is offering free iTunes music to users of the free hotspots set up by the project. In addition, the IC2 Institute, a research unit of the University of Texas, is making a presentation during an Interactive Conference going on in conjunction with the festival. The institute will talk about how everyday people can benefit from connectivity. Howard Rheingold, who wrote Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution, will also speak at the conference. Other coverage of the Austin Wireless City Project's efforts include a story written by its co-founder, Rich MacKinnon. He offers a really great description of all the parties that benefit when a venue offers free hotspots. He gives the example of a free hotspot at an Austin restaurant and describes how a consultancy made money to install the router, a printing company was paid to make new coasters touting the free Wi-Fi, MacKinnon's company Less Networks pays a hosting facility to support the hotspot and a PR firm is paid to promote the free hotspots. He notes that even the big companies make money here, including Kinko's which printed a new sign, CompUSA which sold the access point, which was made by Buffalo, and SBC which provides the DSL connection. The list actually goes on, offering a strong argument for the business case behind free hotspots. [both links via Less Networks]...
