JWZ on RFID credit cards

JWZ on RFID credit cards 12/15/2003 11:35 AM
Great commentary by JWZ about the coming RFID wave-to-pay credit-cards:
"I like that it's on your keychain and it's fast to use," said Kristie Beenau, 36, of Peoria, Ariz., who has used ExpressPay for about six months at a CVS Pharmacy and fastfood restaurants. "I charge everything anyways. Now I wave it rather than get my card out. It's more convenient."

I'm going to make a fortune by selling an invention that lets you punch a hole in a credit card so that you can wear it on your keychain. Then later I'll repurpose that invention to let you punch a hole in a $20 bill, so you can wear that on your keychain too!

The ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are increasingly confident to travel internationally. Credit Cards, Google, and The Internet

Credit Cards, Google, and The Internet 08/05/2004 02:31 PM
Credit Card information theft has always been a worry to their users, a worry multiplied by the internet and online shopping. Users have often been haunted by ‘scare stories’ of data being intercepting and their details getting hi-jacked to purchase goods illegally online. Supposedly, SSL technology and encryption on websites solved this issue, and to a large extent it has.

However, that’s not to say that the problem has been completely wiped out. It’s not that un-common to see mainstream newspapers reporting that it is easy to get stolen credit card details online. As a 'well-informed' techie and web user, one can usually disregard this as a journalists padding out articles with a piece of spice. Yet is this really the case? We decided to look into the validity of claims like this, and investigated exactly how hard it is to get credit card information over the web. The worrying answer we found: not very.

Many news outlets reported earlier this week that via the world's most popular search engine, Google, one could easily harvest credit card numbers using it's advanced search tricks; with a little investigation, Within 5 minutes and a bit of researching on the search giant, Neowin uncovered these queries and managed to exploit them to the extent that we were able to find literally hundreds of credit card numbers, along with their owners names and addresses. The information in many cases contained the ‘added security feature’ that is the 3 digit CVV code, recently introduced to add another layer of security to the online purchase process. One of the sites we uncovered, with a sizable list of numbers and details, was hosted on popular free Invision forum host, invisionfree.com.

Using advanced Google searches and easily available information on the format and structure of various credit cards (easily found on Google), we, and potentially more malicious web users, were able to find not only MasterCard information but a wide variety of card types such as Visa; somewhat disconcerting.

So what practically can be done? We contacted the hosts of a few the sites involved informing then that they were hosting credit card details. However, with many sites it's pretty in-practical and in-effective to deal with it in this manner. Neowin would urge it's readers to practise responsible and conservative use of their card details online; ensuring they use it only on trusted sites only, and sites which offer secure transactions (look for the padlock in your browser). Importantly, it helps to tell other more vulnerable people about the potential for scams on the internet – e.g. parents, new users to the web. Teaching people these dangers is really the only effective way to combat a growing and worrying issue.

Replacing All Your Credit Cards With A
Card Writing Device

Replacing All Your Credit Cards With A
Card Writing Device
03/06/2004 02:05 AM
Wired is running an article about a new sort of device that is being designed to replace all your credit cards. It's a fascinating idea. It's a small device (the "Pocket Vault"), that comes with its own card (the "Chameleon Card") stored inside. When you first get it, you stick each of your credit cards, bank cards, debit cards, whatever cards, into the device, and it records the info on the magnetic stripe. Then, all you need to carry around is the device (with its own card inside). When it's time to use a card, you pull out the device, pick the card you want to use, and it spits out its own card with all the info on the magnetic stripe, and with a display showing the credit card number, expiration date and logo. It also includes some interesting security features. It has fingerprint recognition before you can remove the card, and if the card is out, the display fades after 10 minutes, making it useless. They claim that it will also work with RFID based systems, like the ExxonMobil SpeedPass, but don't explain how it records that info. It might also run into problems with smart cards, since it won't be able to record the info off of a chip. There are some other concerns as well. This seems like the ideal way for someone to steal credit cards if they can access your card for a bit. There are already stories of waiters in restaurants who take your credit card and run it through a skimmer to get the number. If they just use this instead, they get an automatic replica of your card. Also, you have to wonder if various clerks will freak out the first time they see this and wonder if it's legitimate. Finally, carrying around a device doesn't seem to save much space, since the device itself is probably bigger than the credit cards its replacing, and it won't fit in your wallet. Sure, the gadget geek side of me thinks this is a cool idea, but is it worth $200 to have to carry around another gadget (that also slows down the purchasing process...)? It might be a tough sell.
