Neal Stephenson: Why Star Wars doesn't
suck
06/17/2005 03:34 PMCory Doctorow:
Neal Stephenson's NYTimes op-ed talks about how the Star Wars cycle --
in particular, the execrable first trilogy (
Teresa Nielsen Hayden
suggests getting the DVD, watching it in Italian and pretending it's
opera, but that only works if you don't speak Italian, otherwise,
you'll still have to suffer through the "dialog") -- is better than it
seems, when taken as a whole with all the geeky supplementary material
in the games, comics, TV shows, toons, and other sources.
The Internet, it seems, has made it possible to extract all the
non-pablum elements from Hollywood blockbusters and stick them online,
so that the movies are friendly to civilians, but geeks can enjoy them
by logging in.
If you have watched these cartoons - or if you've enjoyed some of the
half-dozen "Clone Wars" novels, flipped through the graphic novels,
read the short stories or played the video game - you will know that
the battle cruiser in question is owned by the New Droid Army of the
Confederacy of Independent Systems, which is backed by the Trade
Federation, a commercial guild that is peeved about taxation of trade
routes.
And that is not the only aspect of "Episode III" that you will see in
a different light. If you watch the movie without doing the prep work,
General Grievous - who is supposed to be one of the most formidable
bad guys in the entire "Star Wars" cycle - will seem like something
that just fell out of a Happy Meal.
Likewise, many have been underwhelmed by the performance of Hayden
Christensen, who plays Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Only if you've
seen the "Clone Wars" cartoons will you understand that Anakin is a
seriously damaged veteran, a poster child for post-traumatic stress
disorder. But since none of that background is actually supplied by
the Episode III script, Mr. Christensen has been given an impossible
acting task. He's trying to swim in air.

With Neal Stephenson's permission, this guy has annotated In the
Beginning was the Command line and posted it online for everyone
to see. I think this is a great example of how works can evolve and be
improved upon. Unfortunately, In the Command Line has not
been 'set free', but it's great that the author was able and willing
to give permission for this development.

Nevermind broadband -- many First
Americans don't have phone service
04/10/2004 01:59 PMComments from an NPR listener who heard
a segment I
did for "Day to Day" on the president's promise to make broadband
accessible to all Americans by the year 2007. Eric Martin says:
Phone penetration on reservations just passed the 50% mark within this
decade and even where there are phone lines on US reservations a lot
of them are old copper lines that can't handle dial-up. So before Bush
goes and gets the rest of the country hooked up with high speed, he
should make sure that all Americans, including Native Americans, have
basic phone service. John Edwards wasn't lying when he was talking
about two Americas.
There are some interesting stats on the lack of phone penetration in
"Indian Country" on
this FCC website.

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AMOne of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales
mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell
became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq
started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out -
and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book
publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized
that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site,
it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's
pissing off retailers, who don't
want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers
say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to
the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it
becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's
also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer
experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online
sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy
am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.

Gnomedex: The Summary
Gnomedex: The Summary
10/28/2003 11:08 PMGnomedex: The Summary
How do you describe a conference, Gnomedex, where you get to meet
and hang out with:
- Tim O'Reilly -- If you don't get
the reference then piffle to you
- Rob Malda -- the founder of
Slashdot
- Dan
Gillmor -- San Jose Mercury News
- Beth Goza from
Microsoft who actually owns a Segway !!!
- Nelson
Minar from Google
- Nick Bradbury from
FeedDemon, Topstyle and Homesite
- Oh and, of course, Chris
Pirillo
- Tom Bridge from MacSlash
- And, even better, all the myriad Gnomedexers and Gnomedex Bloggers
(who are listed here) -- I got
the best suggestions on Feedster from just different random
people. And I'll be implementing those over the next few weeks
and months.
Over the next few days I'll blog more about the conference
including slides I thought were relevant. The overall impression
I got from the conference was simple -- it rocked. Chris managed
to make a technical conference **fun**. How often do you see
that? And I have to admit that I was purely in awe of watching
Chris' people skills. For me the most interesting part of the
conference was probably just watching Chris interact with people. He's
a natural -- its so clear why people pretty much love him.
So if you missed Gnomedex then all I have to say is you should make it next
year. The event was outstanding. Thanks Chris.
