"Now members. Let me firm up my position..." --from part of a speech in the Texas Legislature, by the unfortunately named Gene Seaman. Practice What You Preach will be airing this ad (with commentary) in Texas, trying to stop the proposed Anti-Gay-Marriage Amendment. (embedded WMP)
Practice What You Preach believes that the institution of marriage is under assault in Texas from the twin epidemics of divorce and domestic violence. We are not a gay-rights group. We are mainstream, straight Texans who want the legislative leadership to stop making cheap political points by ignoring real problems.

Viagra and Helicopter Gunships

Viagra and Helicopter Gunships 05/02/2004 07:36 PM

The most powerful tools for conservationists in the Galapagos turn out to be Viagra and helicopter gunships.  Introduced goats consume all of the vegetation that formerly fed the giant tortoises.  Efforts at eradication were unsuccessful until the authorities brought dogs over from Switzerland to herd the goats into headlands whereupon they were shot from helicopters.  Island after island is being declared free of goats and the tortoises are coming back.

Sea cucumbers are highly sought after in traditional Chinese medicine because they supposedly help us older guys, uh, "perform".  With Viagra as close as one's inbox, however, perhaps the illegal harvesting of these animals will stop.

(Off the boat now, in Guayaquil and headed for Peru...)

China tosses out Viagra patent

China tosses out Viagra patent 07/13/2004 03:44 AM
China has revoked Pfizer's patent over Viagra, a move that Lawmeme argues is a precursor to widespread dismissal of pharmaceutical patents.
In what appears to be the first pharmaceutical patent revocation, China has revoked the patent. Not long after the patent was granted, pharmaceutical producers (12 in this account) requested re-examination. It isn't quite clear yet exactly what happened at that re-examination. Some claim the patent failed the detailed description required by Article 26 of China's patent code. Others claim it failed the novelty requirement. Pfizer claims its patent still stands pending appeal. The Viagra patent was already poorly enforced, and now the prognosis looks even more bleak for Pfizer.

Viagra Maker Sick Of All The Spam 08/03/2004 04:17 PM
Pfizer, the folks who brought you Viagra, are apparently sick of all the V1*4gRa ads in their email inboxes as well, and have decided it's time for them to do something about it. They're trying to shut down bogus websites and spammers claiming to sell Viagra, and get to the point where someone at Pfizer, with a legitimate reason, will be able to send out an email again that mentions Viagra without having it shot automatically into a spam blackhole.

AOL has released their list of "top" spam messages from 2003 which represent the subject lines of the spam they found most often in 2003. At the top of the list, of course, is any subject pitching Viagra. Next up are spam for low mortgage rates, and coming in third is the ever popular porn spam. AOL claims they blocked 500 billion spam messages - an average of about 40 per day per user.

You Can't Spell RFID without "If"

You Can't Spell RFID without "If" 11/03/2003 02:35 PM
Radio frequency identification tags are coming, but are they friend, foe, or just too expensive?: WalMart's mandate of RFID tags on products entering their maelstrom will push the adoption of the technology, but some of the futurists' visions of milk carton's reporting in to their home base when they're empty seem like a combination of The Jetsons and 1984. RFID tags are also way too expensive for this vision of the future -- whether AT&T "You Will" utopic or Brave New World dystopic. The cost has to come way down to make them useful for individual products and shelves. Right now, the palette level is the right price point. (Intrepid staffer Nancy Gohring filed the story for The Seattle Times; Nancy is on vacation this week.)...
