LibGC is a small, fast, portable, multi-threaded garbage collection library for C++. It is highly customizable, as it can be multithreaded or single threaded, and the memory size to use for the collector may be changed at compile time. It is precise, as it only scans pointers that exist as members on the stack or as global variables. It's very easy to use, since it has only two classes, Object (the base class for garbage-collected objects) and Pointer (for garbage-collected pointers).

The John W. Kluge Center occupies inspirational and capacious study and meeting spaces within the Library's magnificently restored Thomas Jefferson Building. The Center seeks to bring a group of the world's best senior thinkers - the Kluge Scholars - into residence, to stimulate, energize, and distill wisdom from the rich resources of the Library and to interact naturally over a period of time with political Washington. There is great flexibility in the interaction between the scholars and Members of Congress within the Jefferson Building, where lawmakers find a haven for serious discourse only a short walk from the Capitol. Library of Congress deletes
whistle-blower's comments
04/01/2005 03:43 AM
Cory Doctorow: Joe discovered that when the Library of Congress posted the comments it got on the "Orphan Works" proceeding, it failed to redact the personal info of the submitters, simply covering them with a white box, which anyone could see through with a simple copy-paste operation. He complained to the Library of Congress, so they deleted his comment.
I had assurances from the LoC that they had fixed this personal information disclosure. However, working with the folks at freeculture.org, it appears that their "solution" was to remove my comment document only (instead of a more general solution). Moreover, all the original unredacted files are available in the ZIP file they offer... which hasn't been updated.

Man, doesn't anyone know someone at the LoC who can get things done? Well, I guess that's the price I pay for providing feedback (participation tax, I suppose).

Zora Neale Hurston Plays at the Library

The Zora Neale Hurston Plays at the Library of Congress
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem /znhhtml

The Zora Neale Hurston Plays collection at the Library of Congress present a selection of ten plays written by Hurston, author, anthropologist, and folklorist. Deposited in the United States Copyright Office between 1925 and 1944, most of the plays remained unpublished and unproduced until they were rediscovered in the Copyright Deposit Drama Collection in 1997. The plays reflect Hurston's life experience, travels, and research, especially her study of folklore in the African-American South. Totaling seven hundred images, the scripts are housed in the Library's Manuscript, Music, and Rare Books and Special Collections Divisions.

Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960), the author of the ten plays (with co-authors Langston Hughes on Mule-Bone and Dorothy Waring on Polk County), deposited these scripts with the United States Copyright Office between 1925 and 1944. Included in the scanned materials are four very short plays (sketches or skits) and six full-length plays. Most are
light-hearted if not outright comedies, and several include song lyrics without the associated music. Hurston knew the songs and the subjects of these plays from her own upbringing and her professional folklore research in the African-American South. She identified as her hometown Eatonville, Florida, the first African-American incorporated township.
During the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, Hurston traveled the American South collecting and recording the sounds and songs of her people, while her research in Haiti is reflected in the voodoo scenes and beliefs woven into several of the plays.

With the exception of Mule-Bone, the plays presented here were all unpublished when they were rediscovered in the Library of Congress in 1997. At that time, only Polk County was at all familiar to scholars on the basis of copies in other repositories. Little was known about Hurston's theatrical career until 1998, when scholarly publications began to reflect the drama discoveries announced by the Library of Congress. The discovery of the scripts, added to those Hurston plays already known, firmly establishes their author, an African-American woman, as a significant dramatist of the twentieth century.

Israeli civil war?

Israeli civil war? 07/06/2004 04:58 PM
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said yesterday that Israel is on the verge of a civil war. The Israeli Knesset held an emergency session on Tuesday to discuss the growing threat of violence and anti-government assassinations--but this time, the anti-Sharon and anti-Likud threats are from the Israeli Right, not Left.

Angry settlers (who are about to become ex-settlers), egged on by a few extremist rabbis, oppose Israel's disengagement and pullout plan from Gaza (which is already underway) and the West Bank: "The General Security Service (GSS) believes that the next assassin of an Israeli Prime Minister is already here and is looking for an opportunity to strike. "This is not an academic possibility anymore. The danger is clear and present. A small core of settlers believes that Sharon is disengagement, and disengagement is Sharon, and they want to stop him," a GSS official told Channel 1 TV. "There are people who have already taken the decision that, come the day they are going to 'save Eretz Israel, that they are going to kill the PM or a minister, a defense official or a policeman." Ironically, the only people who oppose the pullout/disengagement plan even more than the settlers are Palestinians, who oppose it 65% to 34% in a new poll, down from a previous support of 73% in February. The Media and Society Research Group of Cornell University conducted a survey in November of Americans with respect to their attitudes towards Muslims. Nearly half (44%) of respondents favored restricting the civil rights of Muslims in some way. The press release, with links to the report, is available at [link]

My next question is, of the 56% of the people who didn't favor restricting the civil rights of Muslims, what percentage are going to do anything about trying to stop this trend?

A company launching a new application claims it can tell senders of e-mail whether the recipient has opened it, and for how long (and even, in many cases, the location of the reader). "Creepy" doesn't begin to do justice to this concept. Imagine if someone sent you a piece of junk mail using the Postal Service, and included a tracking device that radioed out whether you'd opened it or tossed it out. This is roughly the same idea, and it stinks. So I will now look for a tool that discovers if someone has sent me such a message. No doubt there are people working on it already. And if or when I discover anyone sending me mail this way, I make the following promise: I will filter that person's mail straight to the trash. Perrmanently.
