There's a Story, Then it Matters How The

We are coming to a point in the election story when a larger portion of the news is triggered by the decisions of journalists. There's a break in the action with the nominations set. What will the press do with this greater freedom to define and shape the campaign narrative?

Bringing the press into the story

Bringing the press into the story 01/03/2005 10:33 AM

Yesterday, walking on the beach, I had a minor epiphany about the press that I thought I should share asap. Talking to a reporter recently, about the difference between bloggers and pros, I tell a story I often tell, the interchange between David Weinberger and Walter Mears at the blogger's breakfast at the Democratic National Convention in July.

Weinberger asked Mears who he planned to vote for in the presidential election. Mears said he couldn't say because that would bring his biases into the discussion, and he writes objectively, his biases are irrelevant. This was about as clear a distinction as I've seen, because bloggers seem to view it exactly the other way. I can't trust you until I know where you're coming from. So a blogger always discloses his opinion on something he's reporting on, so we can triangulate, get a variety of points of view to determine what's really going on. Triangulation is something bloggers and their readers depend on. In the world of the pro, apparently triangulation is not necessary, because in theory every reporter is objective.

A picture named antena.gifSo, the reporter I was talking with says he is not part of the story. This is where the epiphany begins. That's why the various attempts to self-enforce integrity have been awful failures for the pros. We tested the self-enforcement system put in place by The Guardian last spring, we're not exactly nobodies, and got blown off, summarily and rudely. This is not what we would expect from a QA department at any organization, and surely not a newspaper of high repute. We wouldn't tolerate this from government, nor industry, but these days, when a campaign can be deleted, and its supporters disenfranchised, by cable networks because a candidate showed enthusiasm, consider how much progress we can make until we systematically watch the pros and judge the quality of their work. We're fools if we believe they can be trusted to watch over themselves. We have the empirical evidence that proves otherwise.

Net-net: the professional journalist is totally part of the story he or she is writing. That they believe otherwise is the major bug in their process.

Powell forces press aide to let him
answer Meet the Press question
05/17/2004 06:11 AM
Colin Powell appeared on Meet the Press this weekend, and his appearance was marred by his press secretary moving the camera and attempting to end the interview early when Russert, the interviewer, started to ask a hardball question about the fictional Nigerian yellow-cake uranium that Powell used as an excuse to go to war in Iraq.

Most noteworthy about this event was that Powell, rebuked the press-secretary on air, demanded that the camera be trained on him again, and then answered the question, describing the intelligence he'd received as "deliberately misleading."

Lisa Rein's got the video up -- highly recommended.

EMILY MILLER, STATE DEPARTMENT PRESS AIDE: You're off.

SECRETARY POWELL: I am not off.

EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: No. They can't use it, they're editing it.

SECRETARY POWELL: He's still asking the questions.

EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: He was not ...

SECRETARY POWELL: Tim, I am sorry I lost you.

MR. RUSSERT: I am right here Mr. Secretary. I would hope they would put you back on camera. I don't know who did that.

EMILY MILLER, PRESS AIDE: He was going to go for another five minutes.

SECRETARY POWELL: We've really scre...

MR. RUSSERT: I think that was one of your staff Mr. Secretary. I don't think that's appropriate.

SECRETARY POWELL: Emily, get out of the way. Bring the camera back please. (Camera returns to the interview subject) I think we're back on Tim, go ahead with your last question.

What's worse, the fact that most political reporters have decided to passively accept the White House's constantly changing stories about President Bush's mysterious National Guard service, or that when some journalists do address the story, it's hard to tell if they understand key elements in play?

Newspaper and wire service reporters from around the country are swarming around Montgomery, Ala. -- until this week perhaps best known as the home of country music legend Hank Williams -- in search of anyone who can remember President Bush serving time as a National Guardsman at the local air base in 1972. For the most part, they have come up empty so far.

Forbes magazine puts a dollar figure on the Seattle, Washington-area native's net worth -- $46.6 billion in 2003 -- and crowned him the world's richest person for the seventh year in a row. His company, Microsoft, reports that it raked in $32.19 billion in revenues for the fiscal year ending in June 2003, ranking it among Fortune's top 50 largest U.S.-based corporations.

The only semi-concrete issue that's mentioned is some sort of top-down pre-allocation of IP addresses that would cause more shortage problems than it solves. (There is currently no shortage, and thus no problem to be solved.)

Me Too CD Kiosk Company Thinks They've
Come Up With Something New
07/07/2004 04:38 AM
Reporters have no sense of history. For years, we've been pointing out all these breathless articles about "burn-on-demand kiosks" for either software or music in retail stores. Every time, a reporter insists its such a brilliant new invention, ignoring every other time it's been created in history -- perhaps because every time it's been created in the past, it fails. Having worked with a few of these companies quite a few years ago, it's pretty obvious why they fail. Well over a decade ago there was a company doing exactly this called Personics (though, they started with mix tapes in an age before CDs). While they did run into problems dealing with the music industry, logistical issues were a large part of the reason they never went very far. First, using the devices takes time. So, if you're in a store, that means you either need an awful lot of these devices, or you end up with people waiting around to use the machines when they could be at home downloading music the easy way. Next, kiosks in stores break. People bang away at them and they break. Maintaining the machines is insanely expensive. It always makes it nearly impossible to make any money off of these machines. So why is it that the press loves to write the same story every few years when a new company makes all the same mistakes? I have no idea. This time, they try to spin the story as a "legal way to download music." Of course, there already are plenty of legal ways to download music that don't involve having to stand around in a store using a busted grimy computer.

Sun Thinks About Buying Novell, Just To

Sun Thinks About Buying Novell, Just To
Upset IBM
08/02/2004 04:42 AM
It appears that Sun COO Jonathan Schwartz has no problems tossing out a few provocative statements to get some headlines or to push a competitor to make an ill-advised move. The latest is the idea that Sun might consider buying Novell, solely for the purpose of taking control of SuSe Linux and upsetting IBM's plans to push companies towards SuSe instead of Red Hat (who has become "too strong" according to Schwartz). While Sun may actually be thinking about such a move (though, it seems unlikely), it is amusing to see Schwartz using interviews and his blog to try to goad IBM into making a move. It really looks like the only point of this discussion isn't to have Sun actually think about buying Novell, but to scare IBM into hastily making a bad move (possibly buying Novell, themselves).

01/24/2004 11:27 AM
Faux News cites a Heritage Foundation report that asserts the poor in America are doing just fine because many of them live in their own homes and have cars. However, I know poor homeowners who have to deal with rampant crime, high property taxes (to subsidize the suburbs,) bank redlining, lousy schools and crumbling infrastructure. Also, car ownership is a necessity for most people in most places- not a luxury as would be suggested. Rather than citing the statistics of DVD-player ownership, I'd prefer to know more about real quality-of-life issues, such as how many of these people have health insurance. What do you think?
