The Legend of Trent Lott and the Weblogs

The Legend of Trent Lott and the Webl0gs

The Legend of Trent Lott and the Webl0gs 04/09/2004 04:12 PM

A new study from the Kennedy School pinpoints what happened between Big Media and the blogs in the case of Trent Lott. It does not portray weblogs as lead actor, but as reactor to a story that almost disappeared. A certain receptivity in the bloggers allowed judgment in the press to correct itself.

Trent Reznor’s GarageBand Release

Trent Reznor’s GarageBand Release 04/18/2005 10:48 AM
“Trent Reznor just did one of the coolest things an artist could do,” writes C.K. Sample, III, for tuaw.com, “and he did so in a specifically Apple-centric way. He released Nine Inch Nails’ new single, The Hand That Feeds, as a 70MB stuffed DMG file containing the entire song in GarageBand format with a note from Trent himself.” [Apr 17, 2005]

Xeni Jardin: On nin.com, Trent Reznor is offering a complete mix of a song from the forthcoming Nine Inch Nails album as a Garageband 2.0 file. The CD/vinyl is due out on May 3. Snip from the README:
"For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there. I tried a few years ago to do this in shockwave with very limited results. After spending some quality time sitting in hotel rooms on a press tour, it dawned on me that the technology now exists and is already in the hands of some of you. I got to work experimenting and came up with something I think you'll enjoy. What I'm giving you in this file is the actual multi-track audio session for "the hand that feeds" in GarageBand format. This is the entire thing bounced over from the actual Pro Tools session we recorded it into. I imported and converted the tracks into AppleLoop format so the size would be reasonable and the tempo flexible."

Another urban legend debunked 11/05/2003 01:49 AM
ESA astronaut, Pedro Duque writes "I am writing these notes in the Soyuz with a cheap ballpoint pen. Why is that important? As it happens, I've been working in space programmes for seventeen years, eleven of these as an astronaut, and I've always believed, because that is what I've always been told, that normal ballpoint pens don't work in space... and here I am, it doesn't stop working and it doesn't 'spit' or anything. Sometimes being too cautious keeps you from trying, and therefore things are built more complex than necessary." From Snopes: Fisher spent over one million dollars in trying to perfect the ball point pen before he made his first successful pressurized pens in 1965, which NASA uses. [via GearBits]

Marley's 'Legend' turns twenty:

"Legend'' is unique because it's become more than just music. It's an idea, a lifestyle, a web of cultural touchstones spun in a delicate vortex. In the realm of musical-taste-as-statement-of-personal-identity, "Legend'' says: I generally care about world events. I favor cotton clothing. I think stress is bad. I want to stop injustice. I'm all for love. I wouldn't say no to the herb, if you get my drift.

Dokdo and Kunibiki Legend

Dokdo and Kunibiki Legend 03/22/2005 04:58 PM

It turns out that Shimane Prefecture has a legend called Tale of Kunibiki according to which gods created Japan by pulling lands from far over the sea.  So Japan was created out of scraps stolen from other countries?  This shameless legend is interesting from engineering point of view but also offers a glimpse of the mentality behind Shimane assemblymen who, no doubt, grew up with the lengend.

I better alert Homeland Security Department to watch out for ropes around Hawaiian islands.

Urban legend diffusion

Urban legend diffusion 08/23/2004 04:46 AM

Mizuka just asked me if I had heard about some guy who was busted for making tons of money trading stocks who claims to be a time-traveler. The story was that he would show them the time-machine if they let him go. She said her Japanese friends were talking about it. I laughed and checked Google News with an assortment of keywords with no results. I wandered over to #joiito . Soon enough nichlas came up with a link to a WWN article from March, 2003 about the story. Just as I was wondering if this was something to blog about, KevinMarks page-slapped us with the snopes.com entry from April 2003 debunking the story.

I would really love to see the path that this silly story took over the last 1 1/2 years to get from WWN to me via the Japanese girls gossip network.

HTTP/1.1: Header Field Definitions: Did you ever wonder why the HTTP_REFERER header is missspelled? (You did know that "referrer" is actually spelled with two "r"'s, right?)

It turns out that the misspelling harkens back to the HTTP spec, as linked above.

That link is to the 1.1 spec, but in a fit of curiosity, I went looking to see how far back the misspelling went. The earliest I found it was in RFC 1945 from June 1996. Can anyone document it earlier than this?

The legend of lost Disney porn

The legend of lost Disney porn 12/28/2004 03:08 PM
Xeni Jardin: Following up on last week's BoingBoing post about a vintage, X-rated, Disney-inspired comic for auction on eBay ( Link to post), BoingBoing reader Mercutio writes:
An entry on LJ prompted me to look at Boing Boing entry concerning the sale of Disney parody/porn on Ebay. Thought you'd appreciate knowing that Disney animators actually made an orgy scene using characters from Snow White.

I once worked at Facets Multimedia, an art movie house in Chicago. During the mid 1980s, I attended a lecture by famous animator Seamus Culhane. Mr. Culhane had worked for Fleischer, Disney and Warner Brothers at different times. And he was an animator on Snow White. (Mr. Culhane was fired by Walt Disney for trying to organize an independent union - but that's another story.)

During his talk, Mr. Culhane was asked if there had ever been any porn created that was like the famous picture from The Realist [Ed. Note: the "Disney porn" image auctioned last week on eBay]. He answered that, yes, the work was so long that the animators got bored and created very explicit orgy scene sketches and cells. He further said that when Walt Disney heard what was going on, he personally hunted down and burned all of the objectionable material.

Thought you'd like to hear this story. I don't know if Mr. Culhane or any other animators were ever quoted in a new source about this episode in Disney history.

As any regular reader of this site knows, my blog-colleage Cory Doctorow is BoingBoing's resident guru on all things Disney. Browse the results of thi s Google search string for some of his previous posts on ephemera from the mouse-o-sphere.

The Legend of Dixie Square Mall

The Legend of Dixie Square Mall 04/19/2005 03:47 AM
Dixie Square Mall , in the mostly-blighted "inner ring" Chicago suburb of Harvey, Illinois, opened in 1966. It suffered gradual decline, until it closed in 1978. A year later, film crews gave the mall a brief makeover and Jake and Elwood Blues drove through the place. Then, nothing. For 20-plus years, the mall sat and decayed. Renovation plans (even a planned baseball stadium for the White Sox) were popular over the years, but never panned out. In 1993, a rape and murder took place in the JC Penney's space. From space, the mall looks beat up. From the ground, it looks even worse . Human fascination with deserted space has borne a number of websites< /a> and spelunking trips (along with some excellent then-and-now comparisons ), and a documentary is apparently in the works. Finally, at long last, there 's renewed hope for the site. Previously seen here and here.
