teleported? Well, they've done it with atoms now.
In quantum teleportation, the sender, normally called Alice, instantaneously transfers information about the quantum state of a particle to a receiver called Bob. The uncertainty principle means that Alice cannot know the exact state of her particle. However, another feature of quantum mechanics called "entanglement" means that she can teleport the state to Bob. I'm not real sure what all that means, but I'm sure that soon they'll be able to do this with multiple atoms at the same time. I think we've all seen "The Fly" enough times to understand how many ways this technology can go wrong. If they're going to start building Star Trek contraptions, let's start with a holodeck. Wouldn't you rather your garage looked like the moon than risk a trip to the moon in a teleporter. With most of my belongings still in boxes, I was forced to navigate my still-unfamiliar surroundings with the only light I could find — the backlight on my iPod. That being said Griffin Technology, creators of some of the coolest accessories ever to grace an Apple product — or desktop — have announced a whole new iPod accessory, one that adds nothing to the musical value of the iPod, or its aesthetic appeal, or its recording capabilities. Quite simply, this new iPod add-on turns the iPod or iPod mini into a flashlight (or a laser pointer). Called i Beam, the snap-on flashlight “is great for finding keys in the dark. The other half of the package is a class IIIA laser pointer, handy for iPod-friendly presentations and other, less professional pursuits. Both units come with a snap-on protective cap that can be attached to any keychain for convenient portability and accessibility.” Which, of course, lends itself to the age-old question: What will they think of next? Beam of PainBeam of Pain 06/07/2004 10:56 AM A roundup of new weapon technologies in this Sacramento Bee piece: Test subjects can't see the invisible beam from the Pentagon's new, Star Trek-like weapon, but no one has withstood the pain it produces for more than three seconds. People who volunteered to stand in front of the directed energy beam say they felt as if they were on fire. When they stepped aside, the pain disappeared instantly.Link (Via Warren) Beam us up, mossbacksBeam us up, mossbacks 06/19/2004 01:33 AM Usatoday.com - Fri Jun 18, 08:06 am GMT Abstract Beam 0.1Abstract Beam 0.1 04/26/2004 02:22 PM A theme with bright colours on a black background. Well, there may be some help on the horizon, now that Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. says it will add video transmissions to its U.S. pay-radio system in 2006. In another splash of technology convergence that is seeing the boundaries melt between all forms of electronic communications, Sirius said yesterday that in the second half of 2006 it will add two or three channels of video content to the lineup of about 120 channels of digital music, talk and information that it already beams by satellite to more than one million subscribers in the United States.
