Karen Hughes, off the hook

Karen Hughes, off the hook

Karen Hughes, off the hook 04/09/2004 04:12 PM

It was disappointing to hear Terry Gross let Karen Hughes off the hook in her Fresh Air interview. Hughes said something like, "When people talk about this administration being secretive, I think they actually mean that there aren't many leaks." Then Hughes gave an example of a leak that did damage. "No," Terry didn't say, "That's not what we mean. We mean that Cheney won't release the names of the people he consulted with about energy policy..." and then she didn't go on from there....

Karen Reflects on WebCred

Karen Reflects on WebCred 02/01/2005 10:09 PM

My favorite quote from Karen Schneider’s posts about last week’s WebCred conference:

“Librarians are primarily concerned with last-mile issues: access, organization, preservation, intellectual freedom, and information literacy.

Content providers, such as journalists and bloggers, are primarily concerned with first-mile issues: creation, dissemination, delivery.” [Free Range Librarian]

An excellent summary!

Getting Started with RSS: The No-Brainer Method

"By popular demand, this is a short introduction to RSS, employing Bloglines, a free, Web-based RSS aggregator (reader). This is how I got started with RSS--hence, it's a guaranteed no-brainer!...

Still, RSS is a bit baffling at first. Once you step in, though, you'll have an immediate 'ah hah.' These directions were written to get you from baffled to 'ah hah' in less than fifteen minutes." [Free Range Librarian]

Why Karen Ryan Deserved What She Got 04/09/2004 04:12 PM
"Karen Ryan, you're a phony," said a Cleveland Plain Dealer editorial. She's a confused phony, however, unable to comprehend why faking the role of reporter, on behalf of a government "news release," should be questioned at all. But there's something bizarre here too. Call it her state of mind.

BBC war correspondent Stuart Hughes' courageous, first-person blog testimonial on surviving a land mine accident in Iraq brought home the personal reality of war to readers worldwide. At left, a snapshot of Stuart taken in the hospital, as he recovered from the loss of his leg earlier this year.

Stuart is now traveling to Cambodia and reporting -- throu gh the BBC and through his blog -- on the human impact of mines, during conflicts and long after the conflicts end. He writes to BoingBoing:

"Greetings from London. Me and my artificial leg have just returned from northwestern Cambodia, where I carried out my first experiments in videoblogging. You can view my efforts on my blog here. See what you think!"

Recording industry drops amnesty program for file-sharers: The RIAA has ended their amnesty program that let you off the hook for copyright violations if you turned yourself in.

...the trade group explained that it no longer deems the program useful because it considers the public educated or aware enough now to know that they could be sued for file-sharing.

The RIAA added that the number of people stepping forward to participate in the program has slowed "to a trickle."

In all, 1,108 people signed up for the program, the RIAA said.

They announced this change in papers filed to dismiss that one guy's lawsuit over the program.
