The digital data lockdown

The digital data lockdown

The digital data lockdown 04/09/2004 04:12 PM

Last night NPR's "All Things Considered" ran a commentary of mine on the danger that the convergence of three technologies - Digital Restrictions Management, Digital ID and "Trusted" Computing - threatens to make content on the Net far more owned and restrictive than in the real world. Here are links to the RealPlayer and Windows Media Player versions of it. (Please keep in mind that I had three minutes to cover a lot of territory, so, yes, what I say is waaay over-simplified.)...

E-Data Goes After Digital Image

05/04/2004 06:25 PM
E-Data, one of the companies famous for wielding their somewhat obvious patent against just about anyone they can find has now sued Getty Images and Corbis for supposedly violating their patent on by "electronically transferring stock photos and images to customers at a remote location, where the material was purchased and reproduced." E-Data has a patent on downloading data onto a physical object. It's still a bit unclear why this is patentable, but so far they've been successful in getting companies offering music download services to pay up. How could the idea of downloading to a physical object be patentable and how in the world can anyone claim that this is promoting innovation rather than hindering it by making it more expensive?

Cell phone lockdown. 12/06/2003 05:34 PM
CNet: Cell phone lockdown. Now that number portability is in effect, locked phones are even more evil. Two reforms that I would suggest are forcing carriers to unlock phones when contracts expire and allowing customers to take their phone rebate in cash when signing the contract.

Laptop owners adore PowerBooks and iBooks for their snazzy looks, light weight, and excellent resale value. Unfortunately, thieves like them for the very same reasons. And the person who steals your laptop not only nabs your hardware but also may gain access to financial records, corporate data, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information. There are ways to protect your computer and your data. Whether you lash down your laptop with steel cables or apply military-grade data encryption across your hard drive, protecting your laptop takes some effort -- but it may be easier than you expect.
