Flat with a View 04/09/2004 04:12 PM

At the recent DisplaySearch conference in San Diego, the cognoscenti of the flat panel world discussed display's present and the future. Yes, the displays of tomorrow will be flat and thin, but just how we get there is the fun part.

Spanish Flat 04/12/2004 06:15 PM

I got back yesterday but was too tired to post anything.  Everytime we go camping, we forget something and we forgot the air mattress this time.  Two nights without the luxury of air mattress was bad, but not being able to sleep thanks to noisy neighbors was even worse.  They were rude beyond comprehension.  Chopping wood at 3AM?

If you like tranquil camping experience, don't go to Spanish Flat Resort.  We had such a terrible time that we are never going anywhere near the damn place.  Yeah, it was that bad.

BTW, Comcast's e-mail server is not working today so I have no e-mail.  If you need to contact me until it's working again, leave a comment.

See for yourself that the Earth isn't
flat... it's hollow.
07/26/2004 12:33 PM
River guide Steve Currey invites you to join him on a twenty-four day trip into the, er, hollow earth. Currey has chartered a Russian Nuclear Icebreaker ship to leave next summer and is accepting reservations for up to 100 passengers.
"The indigenous Eskimos believe there is a hole in the Arctic Ocean. Observations of several Arctic explorers of mirages of land in the Arctic indicate that the most plausible location for a north polar opening that leads into the interior of the earth is located at 84.4 N Latitude, 141 E Longitude.... Don't miss this chance to personally visit that paradise within our earth via the North Polar Opening and meet the highly advanced, friendly people who live there. We are of the opinion that they are the legendary Lost Tribes of Israel who migrated into the North Country over 2,500 years ago and literally became lost to the knowledge of mankind."
The trip runs $18,950 a head, but anyone adventurous enough to join Currey should note that:
"By joining Our Hollow Earth Expedition, expedition members agree that there are NO GUARANTEES that this expedition will reach Inner earth. The expedition will make a good faith effort to locate the North Polar Opening and enter therein, but worst case scenario is that we visit the geographic North Pole, explore the region, and continue on to the New Siberian Islands."

However, if there were one sitting on my desk here -- and I'm cleaning off a little spot, actually, just so it knows that it would be welcome to stay over -- I would take the 23-inch, 16ms flat panel and a favorite game and try. Sure, we might drop some frames here and there, "chug" some of you kids call it, but we'd be trying something new together, which is beautiful, really, and although it might be a little awkward at first, I'm sure we'd both learn to make it work.

06/24/2004 11:10 AM

Most common screen resolution is1024 x 768 ffor exploring the internet according to OneStat.com: I've got to say I'm a little shocked by this. Fifty four percent? What's also surprising is to see how far gone the days of 640x480 are — less than one percent.

The screen resolution 1024 x 768 has reached an all time high and has risen from 48.3 percent in June 2003 to 54.02 percent. Users with monitors set to the most common resolution 800 x 600 for web sites have an approximate 24.66 percent global usage share. A year ago this percentage was 31.7 percent.

I'd be interested to know how this translates into browser window area. How many surfers have a sidebar running, or don't run their browser maximized? I'd like to know the average browser rendering area.

Toshiba SD-P5000 15-Inch Not A Monitor 06/24/2004 09:47 AM

toshiba_sd-p5000.jpg image

My first thought after seeing this 15-inch LCD panel with DVD from Toshiba was, "Of course! A decent VGA monitor that doubles as a somewhat portable movie player. How lovely. I need a snack," but as I looked at it, it seemed as if it actually doesn't have VGA ins, so ... why not? It absolutely kills me to have all these perfectly decent LCD televisions unable to accept a VGA signal. In the past, sure, it made sense. Television CRTs were huge but had awful resolution and computer CRTs were small and had high resolution, but that's increasingly not the case. Anyway, just as I got really confused, I noticed this diagram at the bottom, which if I'm interpreting correctly means the Toshiba SD-P5000 can, through a series of intricate MPEG encodings and I/P processes, turn a DVD into a fish. Oh, okay then, no VGA forgiven.

22_640.jpg imageCasio comes out of absolutely nowhere with a 2.2" amorphous TFT LCD capable of display VGA resolution. Hell, I didn't even know Casio made screens.

If you've forgoten your display terminology, VGA resolution is 640 x 480 dots - what used to be the standard number of pixels a screen could display at the same time. Modern computer screens (like the one you're looking at now) can display, oh, 1024 x 768 dots of resolution, and often more. (OMG, N00b. - ed.)

NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America Inc. on Monday introduced a new 21.3-inch LED backlit LCD monitor aimed at desktop publishing, pre-press and other professional markets looking for high color fidelity in a large-format LCD display. The new monitor features 1600x1200 native resolution, 500:1 contrast ratio and 190cd/m2 brightness; it sports VGA and DVI inputs. The display uses LED backlight technology made by Lumileds Lighting, which NEC-Mitsubishi said helps achieve 109 percent gamut for Adobe RGB color space. Pricing was not announced, but NEC-Mitsubishi said to expect the new display to hit stores in the fourth calendar quarter of 2004. NEC-Mitsubishi's Web site was not updated with information about the new display as MacCentral posted this article.

Large size LCD monitor prices crash

Large size LCD monitor prices crash 09/03/2004 08:23 AM
LACK OF DEMAND, over supply and huge stocks of product in the channel mean prices of large sized LCD pannels fell more than expected in August, research firm iSuppli said. That, according to a report from the firm, meant a "near time headache" for suppliers but could mean bargains for buyers. The LCD panels used in desktop PC monitors fell the most, said iSuppli in a report to its customers, meaning prices for 15-inch and 17-inch panels fell by around 18 to 19 per cent last month.

Despite hopes that sales of LCD TVs would pick up because of the Olympic Games last month, the reality was that sales were slow. And sales of LCD monitors appeared to be just as slow. Some desktop monitor firms have begun slashing prices on 15-inch and 17-inch LCD monitors already - there are stocks in the distribution panel getting dusty.

When Your Car Gets The Blue Screen Of
Death
06/29/2004 12:11 PM
It's not a new story, but as automobiles become more reliant on new electronics systems, there are more and more stories about cars with bugs. Unlike with traditional mechanical problems, often these electronics problems are hitting high-end luxury cars first, since they are more likely to have "bleeding edge" level electronics systems in them. What's scary, though, as these electronics move further into critical systems within the car, more of these stories have safety implications, rather than just amusing anecdotes about windows that don't open.

Why the 2TB µcard Size Doesn't
Matter

Why the 2TB µcard Size Doesn't
Matter
08/09/2004 11:08 AM

So the Taiwanese Industrial Technology Research Institute is rolling out a new type of flash memory card called "µcard" ("microcard," one would assume), to be unveiled formally at the Taipei International Electronics Show in October. And while everyone is getting their panties in a bunch about the 2-terabyte capacity, it should be noted that other existing flash memory formats, specifically Sony's Memory Stick Pro and Memory Stick Duo already support cards in sizes up to 2-terabyte. It all has to do with the addressing and just because someone can support that doesn't mean they will.

What is interesting about the new format, though, is its bandwidth. With a projected speed of 120MB per second (compared to Memory Stick Pro's 20MB per second, for instance) the new card format may not be any bigger than other standards, but it should be able to be written to a lot faster. Only time will tell if anybody will start incorporating the new µcard format into their gadgetry, however.
