Look ma, no mouse! 04/01/2005 03:50 AM
Myron Krueger began his pioneering work in interactive art in 1969. He was one of the first to explore the aesthetics of interactivity with his “responsive environments.” ¶ While preparing a talk that included a reminiscence of Krueger demoing Videoplace in the 80s, I was surprised he’d not yet merited even a stub in the Wikipedia. While that may eventually motivate me to register and start the page, for now, I will just share some links. [more inside, including videos]

The Mouse BT

The Mouse BT 02/06/2005 03:24 AM
I was in the drugstore picking up a prescription and wandered into the computer section, where I found myself impulse-buying The Mouse BT from some outfit I’ve never heard of called DVForge. It’s Bluetooth and looks like an Apple mouse, only it’s got two buttons (the way this is accomplished seems to rely on bending acrylic in a really clever way) plus a scrollwheel. It’s slick, slick, slick; and looks neat. I bought the Aluminum model but now that I realise there’s a white version too I think that would look better. On top of looking nice, the scrollwheel is the smoothest I’ve used. I’m kind of worried how fast it’ll go through batteries; I’ll report back when I know.

Do Not Touch That Mouse

Do Not Touch That Mouse 12/30/2004 04:39 PM
We've all seen examples of how various companies are attaching more and more ridiculous "warnings" to products thanks to ever-present product liability suits because someone didn't realize things like that they shouldn't submerge their toaster in the bathtub they were in at the time. While many of these are simply funny examples of "who would ever actually do that?" some new laws are creating some absolutely bizarre warning labels. Take, for example, warning labels that are showing up on certain computer mice in the state of California. Thanks to regulations, some mice have warnings saying you should wash your hands after handling them. The warning is specifically referring to the cord, and the fact that it has a tiny bit of lead in it, but as the article points out, unless the cord is broken up, you'd probably have to eat a fair amount of your mouse cord before you'd have a problem from lead poisoning. Still, apparently, some users are returning the mice, fearing for their safety.

Here's an oldie-but-goodie. In 1999, the Iams Company publicly released a list of their favorite "fun" (read: stupid) customer service calls, including such provocative queries as:
• "I have trouble seeing what I'm scooping in my yard. Can your food turn my dog's poop pink?" -dog owner, Ronkonkoma, NY
• "When my dog pees, he leaves brown patches all over the lawn. Is he peeing fire?" – dog owner, Covington, KY.

A mouse is no substitute

A mouse is no substitute 04/18/2005 02:22 AM
(all links safe for work) Some once hypothesized that as pornography became more accessible and more mainstream, men in turn would become uncontrollable, ravenous sexual beasts. I always thought this myself: a man will see something in porn that a real woman won't give him—Internet porn now caters in a click to every fetish you can imagine—and he will find a way to get it.

My ex-girlfriend, observant and intelligent beyond her years, always used to tell me the opposite: it wouldn't turn men into beasts, having their way with every woman they saw. No, it would turn them away from women completely, libidos and their ability to connect with real females weakened by the hardcore acts and impossible bodies that only porn stars could give them. The porn would crave some intrinsic desire, but leave both people in the couple lonelier and less fulfulled.

Now I think s he was absolutely right.

Macintosh peripheral-maker, MacMice, on Friday began shipping the MicFlex USB Microphone. According to the company, the MicFlex design allows it to be used easily on a desktop or laptop computer. The USB mic assembly is housed in a small aluminum pod at the end of an 18-inch flexible tube -- the tube can be removed from its base and plugged directly into a PowerBook or iBook USB port. The US$49.99 MicFlex is compatible with any Mac running Mac OS 9.1 or above and a USB port.

MacMice GarageKey USB MIDI Keyboard

MacMice GarageKey USB MIDI Keyboard 07/30/2004 07:07 AM

garagekey_3.jpg imageJack Campbell of MacMice has announced a new 37-key USB MIDI keyboard called 'GarageKey,' designed specifically for use with Apple iLife '04's GarageBand software. For $130, there are probably more full-featured Casios or Yahamas with MIDI output -- and really, MIDI output is pretty much MIDI output on something like this, although MIDI-over-USB is potentially more convenient for many -- but the GarageKey does have the benefit of being a decent size to fit on your desk.

I wonder, though, did MacMice really build the GarageKey as they say, or did they license it from another manufacturer? Because some people have been taking them to task lately for claiming to be the sole inventors of products that turn out to be rebrands. Nothing wrong with rebranding, mind you, but saying you built it might be stretching a bit.

mousebt_240_1.jpg imageMacMice has updated their 'The Mouse' -- you know, the one that adds a right click and a scrollwheel to an Applesque mouse -- now incorporating Bluetooth, to come up with The Mouse BT. But they're not late to market, no. Instead, they took their time to "eliminate many of the annoying shortcomings that are present in earlier BT mice."

You know, I actually saw one of these The Mouses the other day in person (a corded one, not the Bluetooth model) and they really look a lot better in person than they do on their website. Something about their photos makes the acrylic shell look rough, but it really isn't when you actually see it.
