DENVER, CO - June 4, 2004 - Today, NewsGator Technologies announced
that the recently launched NewsGator Media Edition is featured in
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004's "Online Spotlight," an online
guide created specifically for Media Center Edition PC customers that
offers a central location for them to find the latest third-party
services and software, such as music, movie trailers, news updates and
even Karaoke.
NewsGator provides a mechanism for Media Center PC users to easily
find NewsGator software and services online, without having to
separately download anything from the NewsGator web site. Both text
and multimedia content is supported, and information that has not
already been viewed on another device can be displayed by
synchronizing user subscriptions with NewsGator Online Services.
"We're excited to be included in Online Spotlight - this will
dramatically increase our visibility to the many thousands of Media
Center PC users," said Greg Reinacker, President & Founder of
NewsGator Technologies.
NewsGator Media Center Edition is included as part of NewsGator
Online Services. NewsGator Online Services includes three other
content reader editions, which allow users to read content they have
subscribed to from any web browser (with Web Edition), any email
client (with POP Edition), and from a mobile wireless device (with
Mobile Edition), which is a powerful feature for road warriors who use
mobile devices to access information while on the road. The service
also provides exclusive, subscriber-only content to its subscribers,
as well as the ability to search for content that matches a specific
keyword or URL, and return that content in a feed. NewsGator Online
Services pricing starts at $5.95/month per user.
"Media Center PCs allow consumers to have faster and more efficient
access to all of their favorite digital content when, where, and how
they want," said Brad Brooks, Director of Marketing at Microsoft Corp.
"With the NewsGator Media Center Edition, NewsGator Technologies is
delivering a complementary and innovative service that will let Media
Center Edition PC users easily access their customized choice of news
services."

Take Center Stage Among Desktops
12/29/2004 11:54 AMThis month's Top 15 Desktop PCs chart highlights two trends: the
emergence of powerful new gaming systems that have sophisticated
style, and the rapidly growing selection of Media Center PCs, which
expand PC-based home entertainment beyond gaming. Examples of the
former are two new Athlon-fueled machines that sit atop the power
section of our chart: Alienware's Aurora 64 FX-55 and ABS's Ultimate
M5-64. Both of these systems are visually appealing without shouting
"I'm just for games." Not only are they the two fastest systems on the
chart, but they also produced outstanding sound with their high-end
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 cards and their 5.1-channel Logitech
speakers (the X-530 and the Z-680, respectively).

HP's new Media Center PC has more than a passing
resemblance to the Mac mini, which might be on purpose, considering
the new units include optional box-top docking stations for the iPod
(much like the Mac mini was rumored to have had in development).
Whether you see it or not, the silver and white is a welcome deviation
from standard PC fare, although HP's Media Center PCs in particular
have been mightly nice looking of late.
The new case design will be featured on both the Media Center PCs
as well as the new desktop vanilla versions. The entry-level model is
above, and the Media Center version is after the jump. (Thanks,
Matt!)

does have one useful feature that none of the official Media Centers

There's nothing
rotten about this Danish-born Amitech media center, a small form
factor PC with a built-in FM radio and TV tuner that can record both
television shows, radio, and CDs. And while the specs look pretty
good, with a 3-gigahertz Pentium 4 in the nougaty center, the best
part is the price: the Amitech Media Center should retail for under
$1,000 USD.
My Danish is a little bit cheesed, but I'm going to go out on a
limb and guess that the unit, while running Windows XP, does
not run Windows Media Center. If any of you can parse the
Danes' internetstik I'd be happy to take corrections. (Thanks,
Jakub!)

Alienware is innovating again, this time with an all-in-one,
wall-mountable 30-inch TFT/LCD widescreen TV with an integrated
Windows Media Center PC inside. Al
ienware DHD systems, which are based on Hy-Tek's TekPanel 300
enclosure, will feature “Intel Pentium 4 processors up to 3.4 GHz
and the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 operating system. ATI
Radeon graphics, configurable up to X800 XT Platinum Edition with
256MB DDR3 video RAM, and optical drives up to 12x DVD±R/RW, provide
an unparalleled cinematic experience. Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound
completes the package with superior audio quality.”
We not sure how popular this type of TV/PC combo device will be,
but “Microsoft is excited about the introduction of Alienware DHD
systems,” said Brad Brooks, Director of Marketing for the Windows XP
Consumer Product Line at Microsoft Corp. “The integration of
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 within a
self-contained, multi-functional LCD panel is a great example of the
innovative designs that consumers are demanding that change the way
they can experience digital media in the home.”
At first glance, this TV/PC concept may seem very appealing, but
will consumers be ready to spend $6,500 - 8,000 on a flat panel TV
that will have an outdated computer components inside it in the next
two to three years?

Who Needs A DVD When You Have A
Microsoft Media Center?
07/14/2004 05:22 AMWell, I'm sure some folks will make a bigger deal out of this than
necessary, but Bill Gates is now claiming that
the DVD has no
future. He believes in 10 years it will be completely obsolete.
As he says, it makes no sense for people to be carrying around
portable media that can get scratched, lost or broken. While the
Inquirer then knocks Gates by pointing out he once predicted the
internet had no future either, this prediction really isn't that
ridiculous. As overall storage and broadband connections grow, it may
become pointless to ever carry around a DVD. Some might say the
process has already started (though, with questionable legality in
some circles). Of course, what isn't mentioned is that Gates hopes
that what used to be your DVD collection will, instead, reside on a
Microsoft powered "Media Center" that you can access from anywhere.
