Wedding Fabric
03/06/2004 01:50 AMI've been pretty busy with wedding planning lately, hence the low
frequencies of updates to this site. I have taken some pictures
however. This was inspired when I wandered by Karen's sewing machine,
which she had inadvertently left on late at night. This next one is a
closeup of a fabric detail. And here's Karen's favorite....
The E-Fabric Has No Clothes
The E-Fabric Has No Clothes
06/22/2004 03:27 PMEvery so often, the promise of electronic circuitry in fabric arises
even though
"e-fabrics"
a> have a long way to go before getting into clothing. There are a
range of obstacles: e-fabrics are too stiff or uncomfortable, they
aren't durable to washing, and they need to be recognized as safe,
among other things. Maybe someday these problems will be solved, but
in the meantime, embedding electronics in fabrics should
at least look appealing. So interesting (or "beautiful" as
their inventor describes them) wall hangings and switches made from
e-fabrics could popularize the concept of non-traditional electronics.
But for now, these devices still have a few technological hurdles to
overcome.

The fabric of the bl0gosphere
The fabric of the bl0gosphere
01/07/2004 05:20 PMReading Brian Greene's New York Times
op-ed
on the inherent subjectivity of time in a quantum, relativistic
universe, I couldn't help be struck by two thoughts. First,
Greene fails to mention Peter Galison's
excellent recent
book on the very same subject of time simultaneity.
Second, and more important, Greene's vision of "kaleidoscopic" time
perfectly describes the
messy, intersubjective, constantly changing yet enduring nature of
information in the emerging blogosphere:
"In my everyday routines, I delight in
what I know is the individual's
power, however imperceptible, to affect time's passage. In my mind's
eye, I often conjure a kaleidoscopic image of time in which, with
every
step, I further fracture Newton's pristine and uniform conception. And
in moments of loss I've taken comfort from the knowledge that all
events exist eternally in the expanse of space and time, with the
partition into past, present and future being a useful but subjective
organization."
As David Weinberger taught us in
Small Pieces Loosely Joined,
the Net has deep metaphysical implications for our conception of the
world. We're all used to thinking of the Web as the revolutionary
development, and it certainly was. But while the Web dramatically
lowered the cost of publishing and accessing information, it kept the
static and impersonal page metaphor of older media. Weblogs,
aided by syndication mechanisms, remove that crutch.
Some day we may look back and identify the rise of blogs, not the Web,
as the decisive development that changed our relationship to
information... and to each other.

10/28/2003 11:08 PMSo What About that "Technorati Cosmos" Scott?
I've had a flurry of requests recently asking why Feedster doesn't
have a Technorati like
"Cosmos". So over the past few days, with the assistance of Mike
from down under who tossed in a critical string parser, I've been
implementing this. And we're calling it your "Feedster
Web". We looked at the whole Nebula / Galaxy /
Constellation / etc but Richard
Soderberg came up with "Web" and that one stuck. Now while
the final code may not be ready until after Gnomedex (there's one bug
that makes some domains non-"webbable"), I thought I'd at least give
you a preview so you can tell me if we're on track.

Please leave comments on this blog entry and I'll see if we can,
well, accommodate them.
