More Wi-Fi on European Trains

More Wi-Fi on European Trains 02/10/2004 02:40 AM
Eurostar, the train operator, will start testing Wi-Fi access on its cross-channel services this year: But service won't be available while in the tunnel under the English Channel. Another train operator, GNER, has been experimenting with Wi-Fi on its trains. It achieves coverage in tunnels by stringing together cell phone antennas to maintain the connection, which otherwise is backhauled via satellite. Apparently train operators are hoping that Wi-Fi services will draw customers back away from short-haul airlines....

More Wi-Fi on British Trains

More Wi-Fi on British Trains 01/22/2004 02:02 PM
BT OpenZone is building Wi-Fi on 13 more railway stations: Virgin also covers a few stations. One route between London and Scotland offers access onboard as part of a trial. In addition, Broadreach and PointShot are building the backbone for a Wi-Fi network that can be offered to the rail network operators. They will use the platform to manage the onboard Wi-Fi access....

Wi-Fi Use on UK Trains Popular

Wi-Fi Use on UK Trains Popular 09/21/2004 12:42 PM
Wi-Fi service on UK trains is seeing solid growth in usage: Use of the service is growing 77 percent week over week, but that figure is a bit misleading because the number of trains offering Wi-Fi is also increasing. However, users are also spending an increasing amount of time on the network and there seems to be an indication that passengers are deciding to buy first class tickets because the Wi-Fi access there is free. In other commuter Wi-Fi news, Sydney, Australia is considering offering Wi-Fi on Sydney ferries....

Bullet Trains

Bullet Trains 01/04/2004 12:23 AM

Japan's maglev train sets record: CNN had a story on Headline News about maglev trains and it got the geek in me all excited. They mentioned this one.

The experimental three-car maglev was carrying passengers when it set the world's top speed for a train, clocking at 581 kph (361 mph)...

Now, here's the deal: 600 m.p.h. in a plane is not really a problem, because there's nothing to run into in the air (I know, I know — other planes, buildings, the ground...don't get smart). But 361 m.p.h. on train tracks? On the ground? Where there are things like cars, and cows, and school buses full of little children that could end up on the tracks? That 361 m.p.h. would seem so much faster if you ran into something.

It happened in 1998 in Germany. One hundred twenty people died when abullet train derailed and hit an overpass. And it was only travelling at 175 mp.h.

I don't want to be alarmist or anything, but that kind of speed, that close to stuff that's as unforgiving as an overpass just makes me a little nervous. And it's only a matter of time before Jon Voight and Tom Cruise get into a fight on top of one of them, and then what happens?

Trains vs. Airplanes

Trains vs. Airplanes 12/04/2003 01:29 AM
Tra ins vs. Airplanes. Amtrak has reported record ridership levels for the Thanksgiving season. But the success of the rails is indebted to post 9/11 air-travel anxiety. Maybe, it would be better for travelers to stop fearing hijackings and resume flying planes instead of riding intercity trains out of fear. On the other hand, it could be a good thing that rail travel is getting a second look after years of decline.

Trains with Wi-Fi May Tempt Travelers

Trains with Wi-Fi May Tempt Travelers 05/20/2004 09:53 AM
Survey says that most business travelers would opt for a train over a car or plane ride if Wi-Fi were available: Fifty percent of existing business train travelers already carry a laptop, the survey found, and most already work during train trips making calls or handling electronic files. Users would pay up to £12 (about US$20) for longer trips....

A post for airplane nerds only...

Mountains climbing nearly to 12,000' separate the Los Angeles basin from the Palm Springs and Joshua Tree area.  A layer of clouds between 4000' and 6000' covered all of the Los Angeles airports.  Thus it was necessary to proceed from Sedona into Los Angeles on an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) clearance.  The minimum enroute altitude on the direct airway from Twentynine Palms into LA is 13,500' due to the fact that this airway goes straight over some of the tallest peaks.  I was flying along at 14,000', breathing bottled oxygen, and got called by ATC:  "Fly heading 230 for a train."

I banked the airplane and looked down wondering what kind of monster freight train they might have out West that would require an airplane at 14,000' to adjust its course.

Then I realized that perhaps the call was "Flying heading 230 for terrain."
