Using The Google Web APIs With PHP
Using The Google Web APIs With PHP
07/18/2002 11:26 AMUnless you've been living in a cave for the past couple of years,
you already know what Google is. In fact, if you're anything like most
Webheads, you've probably used it in the last sixty minutes. With its
unique indexing technology and huge database of Web pages, Google has
rapidly become the best search engine on the Web, bar none - and the
company's constant innovation promises to keep them ahead of the pack
for a while longer.
Easily one of the most interesting things to emerge from Google HQ in
recent months has to be the Google Web APIs, which allow developers to
query the complete Google database using a series of SOAP-based remote
procedure calls. By making a portion of Google's cutting-edge
technology available to the public, the Google Web APIs allow
developers to get ever more creative with their Web-based
applications, and enable them to push the envelope with new XML-based
applications.

MT 3.0 Is Not A
Feature Release.
Says Mena Trott:
Movable Type 3.0 is not intended to be a feature
release
and asks Wheres the beef.
Mena mentions a few, but heres my beef. And
the ultimate reason I switched.
No modern publishing system should be without hierarchical
categories and threaded comments. Especially larger installation
really gain from a bit more structure. Of course, both
solutions are available as plugins, requiring patching of the core and
more, to work. But a version leap from one major to another should
really, if not new features, include an adaption to the times and uses
of the product.
Which brings us to #2. Out of the box, MT is a capable but bland
content management system. Its real power comes from third party
plugins, which are of course supported by a stable and
powerful API. Six Apart seems to know this,
MT 3.0 got a major overhaul of the underlying
API structures, yet this is only the first
step. Without assurance that plugins will continue to work in upcoming
versions, reluctance is the way to go. And, knowing that Movable
Types vast repository of third party plugins and addons are the
real value, why does Six Apart not provide versioning and through the
web installation? Theres a third party app to do this, but
well, QED.
I understand that the requirements of a corporation are different
from small one, two-person software development houses. I understand
the need to control communications, and I even understand the
reluctance to accept external input. But, as great outfits such as the
Zope Corporation, have shown us,
community involvement and corporate restraints are not necessarily
exclusive, and almost always profitable when used together.
In terms of extensibility to the engine, the main
feature of Movable Type 3.0 is actually more powerful than
any feature we could have added: its the extensibility that
weve added in the form of the enhanced plugin architecture. The
plugin/developer community is one of Movable Types greatest
strengths. Since Movable Type isnt open source, this has been
the way in which our users have contributed to the product while
relying on Six Apart to provide the strong foundation for their work
to flourish.
Tying in to my comments two paragraphs above, this is Menas
take on the fact that, indeed, Movable Types strength lies not
within the base product but in a dedicated community. The logical next
step would be to support such efforts, not to take them for granted.
The vibe seems to suggest otherwise, but Ill stand
corrected if someone cares to.
Movable Types competition has grown in numbers and maturity.
WordPress and Drupal exceed MTs
initial out-of-the-box user experience by far, and even surpass it in
ease of installation. TextPattern continues to grow
and become a serious contender, the ASP based
weblogging community has recently released some rather compelling new
versions, also. Each system has in record time assembled
a fan base and community not unlike MTs. The differentiator can be
found in features, support, and quick responses to the challenge
of the day issues, every system faces. With 3.0, I see Movable
Type missing the boat, and being a lousy swimmer, I chose a new
captain.
Theres one last issue. I was and am reluctant to mention it.
Its something more personal. As someone who has tattoos and has
seen others, I have learned one very valuable lesson never let
someone tattoo you who has no tattoos of his or her own. Aside from
Anil Dashs writings and Menas infrequent postings on
behalf of Six Apart, very little dogfood seems to be consumed over at
the Movable Type camp. In contrast, the weblogs of WordPress developer
Matthew Mullenweg or the vast numbers of Drupal developer weblogs
instill the confidence I seek. Eat your own dogfood, and your
credibility rises enormously in my book.

The state of wiki APIs
The state of wiki APIs
05/16/2004 02:58 PMDave Johnson wonders about the Wiki APIs. Being the
author of the
JSPWiki:W
ikiRPCInterface, I concur. XML-RPC pretty much is finished for me
as an API standard, and I don't think I will be developing the V2 of
the standard onwards.
However, I like Atom. I like Atom a lot. Consider this official:
JSPWiki will support both the Atom blog and Atom Wiki APIs. I believe
that Atom holds the future instead of XML-RPC. It has the advantage
of being designed properly (no timezone hassles, no UTF-8 issues,
proper built-in authentication), after all.
We should just remember the lessons we learned with that API: the
importance of backlinks, the forward link lists, proper search API,
authentication (Atom solves all of my issues
a> by using WSSE, yay!), the ability to handle attachments,
introspection, versioning support, and metadata. Most of these vary
from Wiki to Wiki.
There is also the issue of the varying markup between Wikis, but I
don't think that is such a big issue, API-wise. What we should do is
to define a generic WikiMarkup?, a
variant of XHTML preferably, which is never seen by the user. It's
just used to transfer data from a WYSIWYG editor to a
WikiEngine?,
which then does the transformation to the local markup. Or
something.

Big WLAN on Campus
01/06/2005 03:14 PM Colleges are the bleeding edge of WLAN technology: I wrote this piece
for Mobile Pipeline (my first for them) which started out as a more
general best practices article for giant WLANs, and morphed into an
article about college WLANs. Why? As I explain in the story, giant
WLAN enterprises don't want to talk on or off the record about what
they're doing. Academic institutions are happy to oblige. Schools also
have the disadvantage of having to support many, many generations of
equipment and operating systems. You can't tell a professor to take a
flying leap, and some schools may still have five-year-old laptops and
desktops that still have to be integrated. It's clear that 802.1X is
the next big trend for both schools and enterprises. It solves many
problems while adding tremendous policy flexibility. Using 802.1X and
L2TP means that you can have smaller VLANs that are segregated by
policy, group, or even randomly to balance users among VLANs....

More Voice Over WLAN Deals
03/06/2004 01:49 AMAlcatel and Nortel are both promoting voice over WLAN systems by
reselling WLAN equipment from Airespace and handsets from SpectraLink:
Cisco started selling voice over WLAN handsets last year and
ironically it appears that move is actually good news for SpectraLink,
which has been making such phones for many years. That's because Cisco
competitors like Alcatel and Nortel need to sell voice over WLAN
systems to customers but certainly won't sell Cisco phones. Instead
they'll use SpectraLink's. This story included some interesting
figures form Forrester Research about WLANs. The study found that 20
percent of companies have or are in the process of building WLANs.
About 15 percent of companies said they had completed or were in the
process of rolling out voice over IP systems, but the story doesn't
distinguish if that refers to voice over WLANs or voice on regular
wired phones. I suspect that the companies that have deployed voice
over WLANs are concentrated in certain market segments like factories
or warehouses. It's likely that there are few companies in standard
offices using voice over WLAN as the benefits are less clear and
because building a WLAN to support voice is a more challenging
proposition than constructing a WLAN just for data....
Interesting Take on Voice Over WLAN
Interesting Take on Voice Over WLAN
02/19/2004 12:43 PMRadioframe is touting its indoor GSM system as better than voice over
WLAN: Radioframe sells a platform that extends cellular coverage
inside an office building and connects to the office PBX so companies
can use their cell phones inside the building. When users are in the
building, minutes are cheaper than outside on the wide area cell
network. The company's CEO argues that even though usage of the WLAN
in the building doesn't cost, the handsets are so much more expensive
than cell phones that it makes more sense to use a system like
Radioframe's. I did a story a while back on voice over WLAN and found
that the handsets cost around the same as standard wired office
phones. So the difference could come down to a decision about whether
a cell phone offers the same features and functionalities that workers
typically want on their phones in the office. Plus, the Radioframe CEO
didn't discuss how the costs of deploying and maintaining its network
compares to deploying and maintaining a standard WLAN....

The Register,
infact, it was something I was discussing with a bunch of friends at
college last week! Nice to know we are being heard.
Car makers BMW, Audi, Daimler Chrysler, Volkswagen, Renault and Fiat
have won a German government grant to help develop the basis for a
standard method for car-to-car wireless data.
NOW is focusing on 802.11 technology and IPv6 to develop
"inter-vehicle communication based on ad hoc networking
principles". Essentially, it's exploring ways that moving
vehicles can automatically set up temporary links with other cars,
bikes and trucks in the vicinity, and share traffic information.
With routing capabilities, the whole thing could become a huge
'automobile Internet', with vehicles warning each other - and their
drivers - about slow-downs, bad weather, accidents and other road
problems.
On a personal note, I really can't even begin to imagine the
possibilities here, a road traffic innovation, chat/P2P/file sharing
heaven on the roads, or a big headache for the RIAA/MPAA/BSA? It could
definitely be all of the above! One thing is for sure, you'll never
get bored in traffic anymore.

small-office networking. This is a pretty classic company development:
customers certainly told them about the gaps in the line-up from all
