In last week's column, I mentioned del.icio.us, Joshua Schachter's "social bookmarking" service. Since then, I've explored the service more deeply in a series of blog entries. Using del.icio.us, I'm now able to process information in dramatically more efficient ways.
    ...
In a Mar ch 2003 column, I wrote about the challenges of doing publish/subscribe at Internet scale. David Rosenblum, who was then CTO of messaging startup PreCache, had described to me an optimization procedure he called "filter merging." The architecture of del.icio.us lends itself to just that kind of optimization. The combination of several trusted human filters, with respect to some topic of interest, yields a powerful merged filter. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]

Routing Spam Back To Where It Belongs? 07/26/2004 03:32 AM
It seems like just about everyone is trying to get into the anti-spam business these days. A new entrant that may be added to the list, apparently, is Cisco. According to this report from the Inquirer, some folks at Cisco are working on their own anti-spam solution. While the article seems to imply that it would only impact Cisco hardware, that's not at all clear from the proposal they point to, which looks like yet another authenticated sender standard, a space that is already quite crowded.

I haven't tried it, but this sounds great. The Toilet Tank Traffic Shaper - DUMMYNET rocks. Is there something similar for PF? For Linux? In vaguely related news I haven't had time to setup the Soekris box yet. My excuse is that I need to either work with OpenBSD or wait for FreeBSD to import the if_bridge code into 5.x to make it work well as a bridge. There's a patch for the if_bridge thing, but I couldn't get it...
