Thin client, rich data

Thin client, rich data 06/15/2004 08:32 AM
Current approaches to taking browsers offline typically enqueue messages that later update a server-based data model. An Alchemy application, though, always works with a genuine local data model that it stores as sets of XML fragments and navigates in a relational style. Bosworth's hunch is that a Web-style thin client, driven by a rich data model intelligently synchronized with the services cloud, could do most of what we really need -- both offline and online. Nothing prevents Java, .Net, and Flash clients from adopting the same strategy, by the way. But if Bosworth is right, the universal client that we know and love could get a new lease on life. Afghanistan's Guerrilla War

Afghanistan's Guerrilla War 09/11/2004 07:10 AM
AT.   Back to Afghanistan.  Islamic guerrillas are gearing up an insurgency to put the US into a two front war.  By the end of Bush's next administration, we should be up to ears in two hot guerrilla wars.  Remember, this is fourth generation warfare.  It turns strength into weakness.

Our amazing military, when bogged down in hot guerrilla wars transforms itself into an extremely expensive, legitimacy depleting liability.  For example, we have set up a situation where we can't lose either Afghanistan or Iraq.  Two hot guerrilla wars would put all of the military assets we have into those theaters.  The additional cost would run well in excess of $400 b a year.  Casualties and confusion would rise as attention is divided between the theaters.  This situation would then make it possible to strike at other areas (Saudi Arabia inparticular) with impunity.  Events would be staged to bait the US into expanding new areas of operations.  The key here is to inflate the bubble of US power to the point it become vulnerable to catastrophic failure.  Add global guerrilla systemic disruption to the mix and we are in for a disaster.

Note:  This effort is led by mens such as Mansoor:  Mansoor is the son of Nasrullah Mansoor, one of the most respected Afghan guerrilla leaders from the time of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s, who terrorized Soviet troops around Gardez. Saifullah Mansoor's reputation as a chip off the old block was cemented when in April 2002 he led a raid in which 18 US soldiers were killed in a guerrilla attack at Shahi Kot in the Zarmat area.

Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona 04/09/2004 04:11 PM

The first piece of paper they hand out at the visitor's center is a publication from the Sedona Arizona Chamber of Commerce:

"The term vortex was first used in 1980 by psychic and writer Page Bryant to describe Sedona’s four popular meditation sites. …

"According to the scientific point of view, a vortex is an ‘area of enhanced linear energy flow’.  … The scientific perspective proposes that ‘upflow vortexes boost spiritual energy and expansion of consciousness’ while ‘inflow vortexes help one turn inward and enhance introspection.’

"Vortexes are also believed to be one of the reasons those seeking growth and renewal find a welcome home in Sedona."

There seems to be some truth to this because most of the thousands of tourists who throng Sedona every day congregate around the energy sources of the strip malls, linearly arrayed along Highway 89A.  Nonetheless after meeting a large number of Sedonans who profess belief in crystal energy and vortexes it occurred to me to "Thank God these people don’t build cars or airplanes."

It would be nice to send white supremacists on a field trip to Sedona.  New Mexico offers scenery similar to Arizona with a cultural mix of Anglo, Hispanic, and Indian.  Modern-day Sedona seems to have been constructed as a demonstration project for what a city would look like if built and occupied exclusively by Anglo refugees from Los Angeles.

[Oh yes, as suggested by some of the readers here Jerome, AZ was a great place to hang out for a day.]

Maybe one day Pierre will grok it 04/29/2004 07:40 AM
Lunch With Pierre.

Photo 6For some time I've been meaning to hook up with Pierre Omidyar, the founder and Chair of eBay. We finally got together at lunch earlier this week in Redwood City, where his foundation is based. I'd heard Pierre is just about the most down-to-earth, "normal" fellow one might want to meet, it in fact it turned out to be true. He kicked out of Valley life in 1999 and moved to the desert outside Las Vegas (he also spends a lot of time in France). He comes back every so often for eBay meetings and to meet with his foundation staff, and it's this foundation that really gets him up in the morning these days. He's made news recently by announcing a new strategy for the organization, one which blends a bent for social change with capitalism - in other words, he's expanding from philanthropy into the investment game, but he plans to focus on businesses that connect people to each other to create the kind of wholesale change that eBay did. Omidyar repeated to me a very repeatable observation: that eBay has been the vehicle for millions of strangers to establish relationships of trust with each other.

Hence his investment in Meetup, for example. It's the first business Omidyar has seen with the same ability to connect folks for social good. Good for Scott!

Pierre and I had a good lunch, talking over many issues for the book. But really, our conversation always came back to community, the core driver of value at eBay. We discussed Tim's concept of the "architecture of participation" and how critical it is in the Web 2.0 world, and how much of the media world has yet to grok it. You can't outsource participation to the ghettos of discussion threads, in other words. The online media world is still looking for its Pong, as Martin, says, but I think we're getting close. Publications are essentially reflections of communities. And I believe the best blogs are publications, in a very classical sense.

In any case, those were the kind of tangents we took during lunch. We did talk search and SFO and such, but I've gotta save that for the book.  [John Battelle's Searchblog]

I sure hope Pierre groks what we're up to.  Maybe one day some money wil start flowing to open source and open standards projects.

Hey!  Maybe John can help set that up?

Can Kevin Martin Grok Technology?

Can Kevin Martin Grok Technology? 03/17/2005 03:26 AM
As was widely expected, Kevin Martin will be taking over as FCC chair following Michael Powell's tenure. There's been lots of chatter about this, and the general consensus seems to be that Martin will be both good and bad in some ways. However, the most perceptive point may be from Kevin Werbach (who worked at the FCC), who points out that the real trick for an FCC head is to "grok" technology, and not to be a politician. So far, it's not clear that Martin meets that criteria. The FCC position is really a technology job, not a political one -- and playing politician over technologist will end up creating many more problems than it solves.
