If you have any clothing you are throwing out or giving away (or even if you're not) would you do me a favor and cut the labels out of them and send them to me? I am trying to make a dress that is contructed entirely of labels for a show at the Helen Pitt this coming spring. I've cut all the labels out of my own clothes, and they aren't nearly enough. I can only make a little doll-sized dress.

David Pescovitz: The conservatown that spawned me--Cincinnati, Ohio--now boasts a mall with a dress code. Rent-a-cops at Cincinnati Mills mall hand out yellow code of conduct slips to those violating behavior and, amazingly, clothing policies. For example, Miami University sophomore Donnie Jefferson was "cited" two different times for sporting a sideways baseball cap. On another occasion, he says, a group of his friends who were wearing white t-shirts and jeans were escorted out. Hmmm... I wonder if it's because Donnie and his pals happen to black. No, it couldn't possibly be that. Not a chance.

"We have to be consistent across the board with the cap issue... There are, unfortunately in these days and times, groups that would mistake that as a different message and we don't want that," Jim Childress, Cincinnati Mills general manager, told WCPO. "In our business a customer is a customer. There is no distinction among age, religion, ethnic background."

X.Org is set to release a new version of their X11 server tomorrow (X11 is the system that drives the GUI desktop on Linux and other UNIX systems). The notable part of this release will be extensions to the X protocol that will allow more flexibility in the compositing of windows. This allows for drop shadows on windows, translucent windows, and other visual effects (The screenshot at right is a bit small, but it shows a video playing at 50% transparency with a browser behind). Another useful feature is the inclusion of the new XDamage extension. Monitoring the regions affected by rendering has wide-spread use, from VNC-like systems scraping the screen to screen magnifying applications designed to aid users with limited visual acuity. The DAMAGE extension is designed to make such applications reasonably efficient in the face of server-client latency.

This all seems a bit technical, I know, but it will mean a more 'Mac-like' visual experience for Linux desktops, and more efficient rendering. The screenshots look great. Windows users, don't worry. I'm sure Longhorn will be along eventually. Right? =)

Now I don't know what exactly you'd want to use this Waysmall 200ax-bt 200MHz computer with integrated Bluetooth for, but that's not because it's useless. Just the opposite, in fact. For $184 you get a low-power computer running the Linux 2.6.0 kernel with webserver and remote login and power management circuity on-board. Throw a solar cell onto this little bad boy and you could do all sorts of fun things, like embedding a permanent webserver into a building, controlling a swarm of wireless robots, or developing the first Bluetooth-enabled loaf of bread. At just 8.3 by 3.6 centimeters, the 200ax-bt still manages to pack in USB, serial, sound, and LCD controller - now with AC adapter!

Cory Doctorow: This Syracuse University thesis on the history of candy bar wrappers is a very breezy work for an academic paper -- insightful and interesting history of the evolution of an object whose ubiquity has rendered it invisible to our modern eyes. Interesting to think that there was a time when the idea of a candy bar wrapper was novel.

Candy wrappers are designed to communicate with consumers, - even though the communication may often be one-way. The bright colors, shiny paper and animated logos speak to our culture in the most friendly and trusting tones. We know that each wrapper holds the promise of something good - at least as good as Grandma used to make.

Bill Wilson's little "single process stack of system monitors" known as GKrellM has become so popular some refer to it (or just use it) as geek eye-candy rather than as the very nice performance monitoring tool that it is. In fact, GKrellM is so popular it may have more plugins than other projects have users. Actually, I think it's not so much that GKrellM has morphed itself into eye-candy so much as that since the very beginning it's been designed as a Swiss Army knife kind of utility.
