05/18/2004 01:23 PMTop notch collaborative coding and text-editor
SubEthaEdit has
reached version 2.0. Formerly known as Hydra, version 2.0 adds
(amongst other new stuff) regexp search and replace, improved
collaboration and networking, autocompletion and iChat and Mail
integration. Go check it out — if you work in a team of
programmers or writers then you’ll find it invaluable.

Things That Just Work: SubEthaEdit
Things That Just Work: SubEthaEdit
03/17/2005 03:17 AMLast week
Simon
Phipps and I were working on something that had to be done by the
end of that day, and he pinged me “Got
SubEthaEdit?”.
I do, and I’ve used it occasionally when sitting around a table with
some people, but he said “Point it at my server.” I hadn’t
realized how smoothly this worked across the Internet, but we both got
our hands on the document at the same time (he in Southampton, I in
Vancouver) and we worked out the problems and got the job done, no
fuss no muss. Is there anything similar on Windows or Linux/Unix, or
even better cross-platform? Because it’s pretty serious magic.
[Update: Robert Chassell
writes to say that Emacs has been able to do this for years, although
the functions having names like talk-connect and
make-frame-on-display has probably not helped the
uptake.] [Hsui-Fan Wang and one other person whose email I lost wrote
to point out MoonEdit].SubEthaEdit Updated to Version 2.0
SubEthaEdit Updated to Version 2.0
05/19/2004 12:11 AMProduction Description: "The idea of collaborative editing has been
researched for years, with notable results. But now for the first time
it has been implemented in a way you actually want to use: A
sophisticated technique allows all users to type anywhere in the text
without locking parts of the text for other users, making SubEthaEdit
just as easy to use as a traditional text editor."

feature, more
05/18/2004 01:26 PMGerman developer The Coding Monkeys has released
SubEthaEdit 2, the
latest version of their collaborative text editing application. The
new version takes advantage of Mac OS X's Rendezvous feature to allow
you to see who's available for collaboration on your network and
invite them to join you simply by dragging their names to your
document. Other additions to SubEthaEdit 2 include find and replace
for regular expressions, autocompletion of commonly-used words,
integration with iChat and Mail, read-only access for documents and
more. It's free for non-commercial use, while those who want to employ
it for commercial purposes need to pay US$35 per license, with a
discount available at three licenses. You need Mac OS X v10.3 to run
SubEthaEdit 2.

Bounty Hunting
12/04/2003 10:40 PMVia Jeremy Hylton, Mark Shuttleworth
(super-rich geek and space tourist) is
offering $100,000 worth of bounties in 2004 to developers willing to
help out with a number of Open Source projects, most of which are to
be developed in Python. A comparison can be made here with Mitch
Kapor, another geek-done-well who funds open source development
through his sponsorship of the Open Source Applications
Foundation.
Personally I think this is a great way of funding open source
development, although a counter-argument is that this kind of reward
could encourage the wrong kind of attitude within the open source
community with programmers dedicating their time to paid projects at
the expense of others. I don't see this happening - people work on
open source projects for the love of doing so and to scratch an itch.
If you have the money to spend and want to offer it up as a bounty for
someone to further develop a product you like then more power to you!
I would certainly consider doing so if some freak incident left me
rolling in cash (very unlikely to happen considering my complete
disinterest in nursing my finances).

FTC Offers Bounty to Name Spammers
FTC Offers Bounty to Name Spammers
09/19/2004 12:39 AMThe United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced, in a
public report, that a system of monetary rewards would help improve
the enforcement of the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited
Pornography and Marketing Act of 2002 (CAN-SPAM Act.) That Act, which
became effective on January 1, 2004, required the FTC to conduct a
study and provide a report to Congress on a CAN-SPAM "bounty system."
While the fact that bounties may be offered to those who help
authorities in nabbing spammers doesn't unusual, what is very much out
of the ordinary is the projected bounty amounts necessary to make them
effective.
The FTC reports three hurdles exist in enforcing the CAN-SPAM Act:
1) identifying and locating the spammer, 2) developing sufficient
evidence to prove the spammer is legally responsible for sending the
spam, and 3) obtaining the source of funding for the bounties. The
report states that those with the information most helpful to
authorities are whistleblowers and insiders: those who have had
personal or business contact with the spammers, themselves. Because of
the real possibility of retaliation, the monetary awards encourage the
whistleblowers to come forward. The FTC thinks that awards of about
$100,000, upward to $250,000, are reasonable, with funding for the
bounty program to come from federal taxes.
Dave's Opinion
I wish I knew a spammer; for a quarter of a million, I could by RV my
kids are clamoring for and go on the road for a few months. Why do we
need an incentive to do the right thing. Turning in details of bona
fide spammers is just a good thing to do. Why should we expect to be
bribed by the government?

FTC Wants To Set Up Spam Bounty System
FTC Wants To Set Up Spam Bounty System
05/21/2004 01:01 PMFor years, Larry Lessig has pushed the idea of setting up a
bounty
for spammers. He wants there to be a monetary reward for anyone
who can track down and turn in a spammer. He's even staked his job on
it. He's said that if Congress passes a law that allows this, and it
doesn't work to cut down spam, he will resign his professorship at
Stanford. Well, we may soon know whether or not he gets to keep his
job. The FTC has
a task force to deal with
the CAN-SPAM law and to make additional rules around it. Among
the rules they're looking at is "a system of monetary rewards to
encourage informants to report CAN-SPAM violators." It's unclear if
this will hit all the qualifications for Lessig's bet, but it could be
interesting. It's also worth noting that they're looking into whether
or not there should be a "Do Not Email" list, and (most importantly)
will be reviewing the results of CAN-SPAM late next year to see if
it's actually helped at all.
