Intego puts the 'con' in the MP3Concept
trojan
04/09/2004 04:11 PM

Yesterday Intego issued a security alert which was little more than a software update announcement thickly veiled as a virus warning. Intego had just released updated virus definitions for VirusBarrier that protected Mac users against a conceptual Trojan horse that could theoretically affect Mac OS X. The Trojan horse, named MP3Concept (MP3Virus.Gen), would exploit a weakness in Mac OS X where applications can appear to be other types of files. The code would be encapsulated in the ID3 tag of an MP3 file but in reality would be a hidden application that could run on any Mac running Mac OS X.

This seems to have been just a clever ploy to sell copies of VirusBarrier, but if any reader has actually found a Mac infected with this Trojan, please comment below.

Intego Exaggerated the Trojan

Intego Exaggerated the Trojan 04/09/2004 06:47 PM
An article over at Wired states that Intego has blown this whole Trojan problem out of proportion. According to experts, The Trojan (mentioned here and here) "...isn't a working piece of malicious code and can't easily be spread to other computers. Instead, it is a demonstration of a possible threat." In response, Intego has apparently changed their story from that of attacking an imminent threat to preparing for a future threat.

"It is a benign proof of concept that was posted to a newsgroup. It isn't in the wild, and can't be spread in the wild. It's a non-issue." ~ Dave Schroeder

The AS.MW2004.Trojan is a compiled AppleScript applet, a 108 KB self-contained application, with an icon resembling an installer for Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac OS X. This AppleScript runs a Unix command that removes files, using AppleScript's ability to run such commands. The AppleScript displays no messages, dialogs or alerts. Once the user double-clicks this file, their home folder and all its contents are deleted permanently.

Intego begs for more press

Intego begs for more press 05/12/2004 12:54 PM
Intego, the company who tried to trick Mac users into buying their product by talking up a possible exploit that was never actually exploited, is at it again. Today a press release crossed the wires warning users of a nother "trojan horse" that is simply an AppleScript with the icon of Microsoft Office's installer. If you download Microsoft Office (from a Warez site?) and it's only 100K, odds are it is not Microsoft Office. The said AppleScript (that Intego is calling AS.MW2004.Trojan just to sound like they know what they are talking about) deletes your home folder.

Moral of the story? If you have a file that you don't know where it came from, check the file type (command-I). Don't waste your money on some faux security software.

Intego on Tuesday introduced two new utilities for Mac OS X users: Personal Antispam X3 and DiskGuard X3. Personal Antispam X3 is an e-mail filtering software that weeds out unsolicited commercial e-mail -- spam -- from your regular e-mail and deposits it in a separate Spam folder. It filters spam using Bayesian analysis, and also uses address, message content, layout and other criteria for filtering. It supports contact "whitelists" and can also filter by blacklist and by common file names. Intego says that Personal Antispam X3 doesn't slow down your e-mail client software. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2 or later, Apple Mail or Microsoft Entourage are also required. Personal Antispam X3, shipping now, costs US$59.95, €59.95 or ¥7,200.
