Now, your favourite language and mine, PHP, has recently started shipping with support for XML-based remote procedure calls (including SOAP) over HTTP. This makes PHP ideal for developers looking to integrate Amazon Web Services into their Web applications. The only problem? Not too many people know how to do it. That's where this tutorial comes in. Over the next few pages, I'll be demonstrating how you can use PHP, in combination with Amazon Web Services, to add powerful new capabilities to your Web applications. Take a look. -- icarus

Tim O'Reilly: Amazon Web Services API 07/21/2002 11:37 PM
Web sites like Amazon and Google are applications. And Microsoft has demonstrated over and over again that a platform strategy beats an applications strategy every time. Once you have other companies building added value that relies on you, you have a kind of benign industry lock in that's a real competitive advantage. (That's why I bet that Microsoft's MapPoint eventually supplants AOL's MapQuest as the dominant resource for geographic information. Unless AOL gets off its duff and supports developers, of course.)

Amazon.com Launches Web Services

Amazon.com Launches Web Services 07/17/2002 12:09 PM
"We're putting out a welcome mat for developers -- this is an important beginning and new direction for us," said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. "Developers can now incorporate Amazon.com content and features directly onto their own websites. We can't wait to see how they're going to surprise us."

Among its many features, Amazon.com's Web Services will allow third party sites to search and display products from Amazon.com's web site, and enable visitors to those sites to add items to their Amazon.com shopping carts. Developers can access AWS through two industry standards: XML and SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol).

Development, Amazon

Q: What's Amazon.com's "secret sauce," the secret of your success?

I wish I knew. I do think that the relentless focus on creating a great experience has to be part of it. It's not just a great experience on the website, because we think about it as a 360 degree experience, which includes what happens after you click to order. What's the experience of waiting for the order to arrive, of getting the box, what happens if something goes wrong? Each of those is part of the customer experience.

Next Generation Webcam Looks You In The

Next Generation Webcam Looks You In The
Eye
06/30/2004 04:31 AM
Just in case you might have been put off by webcams that showed people staring off at a weird angles, you can now be totally weirded out by a webcam system that compensates so that the foreground person is always looking you in the eye. A setup of two webcams transforms the video images to a 3D image map that re-creates an accurate angle-manipulated video. Microsoft's research lab and i2i have been developing the technology for a while, so it could be released for video chat sessions in the not too distant future. And if you're worried about what your background looks like (eg. your messy room/office), a suitably-chosen image can replace your actual surroundings. Perhaps the Jetsons should be cited as prior art for some of the features.

The return of the webcam

The return of the webcam 03/14/2005 04:25 PM

Through a series of miracles yesterday, I stumbled across something I've been searching for forever: an OS X driver (plus a fix for OS X 10.3) for my old USB QuickCam. (I also found an add-on that lets me use said USB cam with iChat AV. Whee!) I then downloaded a program called EvoCam, and just like that, the webcam is back up (view in popup). (No guarantees as to how long it will stay up.)

How's that for a bit of nostalgia? Back in the early days of weblogs, a lot of folks had webcams...it was part of the package. Posts, a list of links to your friends' sites, a webcam, link to your Amazon wishlist, maybe a link to your Epinions page, an about page, a guestbook or little chat widget in the sidebar, etc. It was a social space to move around in. Now that everyone is reading everything in RSS readers, a lot of that sort of thing has been lost. RSS readers are not that social, even with so-called "next gen" newsreaders that recommend sites based on what you already read. It's mostly just information in, information out...little time or opportunity for play. Thank God for sites like Flickr, LiveJournal, and Fark, where people can still go to hang out and play around with the web and their friends a bit.

Webcam Shootout

Webcam Shootout 09/08/2004 08:45 AM

toms_webcams.jpg imageI don't use webcams, because I am ugly. But once upon a time, I was a pretty princess of a man, and had a pretty good time playing around with basic video chat and periodic Brady Bunch groups of pictures on webpages. And while I think it's sort of the received wisdom that all webcams suck equally, Tom's Hardware took it upon themselves to see if that was really the case. The result? Not only can you pay up to $200 for a simple webcam, it seems the more you pay, the better the quality. Amazing!

Sombrero-Wearing Webcam 08/12/2004 09:20 AM

mexicanusbcamera300_3.jpg imageGod, I really hope this is a trend. Not the part where O'Rite Technologies' Webcam 352 looks like Kenny from South Park - I couldn't care less about that - but the fact that the defining feature of the webcam is that it comes with little outfits to dress it up. Specifically, as reviewed by I4U, a little Mexican get-up complete with sombrero.

This is it, folks. We have seen the future, and it is tiny sombreros for consumer electronics. I could not be more proud of the electronics industry than I am today. I am seriously misting a little here.
