I always used to associate Krishnas with airports and vegetarian food. People smile, point and giggle at them as people dancing around and chanting might seem odd in places where dancing around and chanting are reserved for the drunks or the insane, but since living in Finland I've grown rather fond of them because they smile at everyone in a place where smiling at strangers just isn't done. People make fun of you if you're too happy and dancing and people think you're a freak if you're a cynical grump so it's no wonder most people take the stonefaced option.

It's going to be a crap week as, aside from all the other things getting me down, it is likely time to discuss the kevorkian option for HoneyBear with the vet. And, I'm one year older today, too. Yay. Maybe I should go join the Krishnas.

I can't say I was familiar with 'NXT' technology, apparently the technique that made all those slick-looking but poor-sounding flat-panel speakers possible a few years back. It seems the technology itself can actually be used to make some pretty decent sounds—sound that can be heard from a variety of listening positions, instead of right in front of the speakers. Mission is using NXT in their new M-Cube 5.1 home theater system and as reviewing get pretty high marks, spreading sound throughout rooms in a way that "needs to be heard to be believed," according to the reviewer. They are pricey, though, at £1,200—nearly $2,250.

I haven't heard a lot about these Lluon PCs -- and unfortunately their Korean-language site is in Flash, which breaks the 'fish -- but it looks like they're making some fairly attractive PCs and monitors, if shiny white plastic gets you going. The "All In One" in particular [pictured] is v. v. hot, even if proprietary, hard-to-fix machines in general aren't. Anyway, I submit them for your approval; no idea if they'll ever make it to the US. (Thanks, Lars!)

Cory Doctorow: A friend of mine worked at Procter and Gamble when they hit on the idea of giving away baskets of baby-related freebies to new moms. The idea was that a couple days after the family went home and they needed more diapers, mom would send dad out with the package from the freebies and say, "More like these, please." It's pretty clever, and I'm cool with it -- especially now that the whole thing is handled through brokers who take products from a variety of vendors, with input from maternity wards.

That, I think, is a pretty good way of marketing to new families. It doesn't compromise privacy, it gives them something they need, and it doesn't force them or lock them in. It's informative, useful, and respectful (provided that the marketing makes it clear that there's no medical endorsement of these products).

Compare that to this: a service that sneakily gets moms to agree to a "free baby photo" while they're signing all their necessary medical forms on the morning of their delivery. The company that takes the picture then sells your contact info to anyone who'll buy it.

On the morning of the delivery, the nurse hands a sheaf of forms to the mother-to-be. Buried within is a release form offering a free portrait of the new baby. Mom is wired to three different machines, having her pulse and blood pressure measured automatically while two others sensors detect uterine contractions and the baby’s heart rate and another chattering electromechanical behemoth plots a seismograph of both...

...[T]he photo enterprise is run by a third party, Growing Family. They’ll shoot a picture of your munchkin, in exchange for his or her name and birthdate and your full name and address...

Growing Family will use your information from time to time to promote additional products, services, rewards and special offers from Growing Family Network and its select Network Partners.

Another friend of mine had his baby daughter die from crib-death a few weeks after she was born. For years afterward, he and his wife got a steady stream of marketing materials, including ghastly "birthday cards" from marketers who'd bought the information that they'd had a baby, but never received the message that the baby had died. These stickers started appearing in Mexican cities around 2001 and spread like wildfire. Now they are everywhere and even political candidates have resorted to this kind of advertising. They are sold everywhere and are customizable with the name/nickname of your children and pets and whatnot. It is all pretty abnormal and ugly. I can only guess that this fad was brought to the US by chicanos returning from these last holidays in their hometowns.

For once Mexico is not 10 years behind the US, now we are like 3 years ahead in the bizarre family sticker business. When everyone started using these things on their cars, authorities advised to the contrary, they said it was an unnecesary risk to broadcast so much information about your family (names, how many boys, girls, aproximate ages, etc) to potential kidnappers. No one seemed to care.

I will look for some really odd ones on the street and send them if they are really good.
