Fired Will Carpenter for writing a short story. "Some kind of
harrassment," they said, and since Texas is an at-will employment
state, there's not much he can do about it. Is
this story a valid means
of self-expression or a harrassing glimpse into jilted anger? I've
stumbled across more and more news stories about people being fired
for writing, and students
expelled for
writing "dark poetry" in the classroom. How much do you
have to keep secret from your classmates and co-workers?

BB reader Katrus informs us
that the "Choppa Style" hair-do I
posted
a> previously is a "signature creation of Detroit hairstylist Mr.
Little - and yes, the blades do spin." The information comes from
Detroit Metro Times article about Hair Wars, a "three-hours-plus
extravaganza of blooming, towering, blinking, spinning, smoking,
cartoon-like hair creations" where Mr. Little and his rivals show off
surreal sculptures like the spider style (left) and other fantastical
coiffeurs:
"A model in a kimono has two dragons, sculpted out of
braids, perched atop her head. When she reaches the end of the stage,
billows of smoke emit from the dragons’ mouths, and the audience
oohs and aahs. Backstage, Mz. Jade reveals the secret: inside each
dragon is a bottle of aerosol sheen spray, rigged by remote so a press
of a button triggers the spray. Under the bright lights the mist looks
like smoke."

How to kill a linkfarm
How to kill a linkfarm
06/28/2004 01:19 PMAs much fun as it is to run PVRblog, recently it's been a
chore. Last week, someone sent me an email congratulating me on
acheiving a pagerank of 9/10. I had no idea and I guess that's nice
and all (and surprising, given that the site is less than a year old),
but it's turned into a giant honeypot for spammers. I would venture to
guess there aren't any other 9/10 pagerank sites that allow you to
submit information that results in a link to your site.
After waking up and deleting half a dozen posts every morning for
the past several weeks (and banning their IPs), today I noticed even
legit comment posters were tweaking their posting names to reflect a
better google ranking. Instead of putting "steve" down as their name,
their name would read something more like "info on pvr hardware" which
would link to their site. When a feature gets abused by even those
that should know better, it's time to do something about it.
I've considered turning off comments, and that's often what people
do, but in this case I'm removing the URL request on comment forms and
I'm no longer linking to anything from a commentor's name on the site,
including all back archives. I had HTML turned on for comments, but in
the last hour that I've had name/urls turned off, I've already
received a few new spam comments, using HTML in the comment fields. So
that'll be coming off soon too.
I noticed at a few weblogs, new comments don't have email or URL
entry forms, and comments get posted with just names. I always
wondered why, but now I know.

Due Process, or No Process: Rule of Law

04/20/2004 09:57 AMOur government insists that it can kidnap a foreign national overseas
and hold him forever in a Guantanamo jail, or put him through a
military trial and even execute him. Oh, the government has made a few
cosmetic concessions to law in its plans for military tribunals. But
note that these are unilateral changes and can be withdrawn at any
time.
Our government also insists that U.S. citizens can be declared enemy
combatants and tossed into jail forever, or tried by military
tribunals (and maybe executed), without access to a lawyer or the
courts. If the court endorses this, it's endorsing despotism.

(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PMDirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security
issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security
fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused
several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats
other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly
on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include
loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain
device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge
Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw.
11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow
patching of all language installations supported by the affected
Operating Systems.
