Weinberger: "free access to every work
of creativity in the world is a better
world"
09/21/2004 04:55 PM
Cory Doctorow: David Weinberger, author of the brilliant and seminal Small Pieces Loosely Joined, has posted a draft of a great speech on copyright that he's giving at the World Economic Forum in NYC tomorrow:
[F]or one moment, I'd like you to perform an exercise in selective attention. Forget every other consideration — even though they're fair and important considerations — and see if you can acknowledge that a world in which everyone has free access to every work of creativity in the world is a better world. Imagine your children could listen to any song ever created anywhere. What a blessing that would be!

...We publish stuff that gets its meaning and its reality by being read, viewed or heard. An unpublished novel is about as meaningful and real as an imaginary novel. It needs its readers to be. But readers aren't passive consumers. We reimagine the book, we complete the vision of the book. Readers appropriate works, make them their own. Listeners and viewers, too. In making a work public, artists enter into partnership with their audience. The work succeeds insofar as the audience makes it their own, takes it up, understands it within their own unpredictable circumstances. It leaves the artist's hands and enters our lives. And that's not a betrayal of the work. That's its success. It succeeds insofar as we hum it, quote it, appropriate it so thoroughly that we no longer remember where the phrase came from. That's artistic success, although it's a branding failure.

Where's The Border For Real World Laws
In A Virtual World?

Where's The Border For Real World Laws
In A Virtual World?
12/04/2003 03:52 AM
Last month when everyone was making a big deal over the news that the online game Second Life had decided that players own any intellectual property they create in the game, I said it was a bad idea, since it basically took all of the problems of our intellectual property system and moved them into the virtual world - where it was likely to get more confusing. Over at LawMeme, James Grimmelmann, has been thinking a lot about that very idea and has written an insanely long - but absolutely worth reading - discussion about intellectual property issues as it relates to games. It's impossible to summarize his points, but he explores many of the issues in-depth and appears to have thought about these issues in much more detail than the designers of the various games. What it really seems to come down to is the question of whether or not in-game actions are simply covered by the End User License Agreement (which basically becomes the Constitution for that game) or if real laws in the real world should apply.

Norway To Leave DVD Jon Alone

Norway To Leave DVD Jon Alone 01/05/2004 01:45 PM
Following the second acquittal of "DVD Jon" Johansen last month for daring to create and release software that let him view DVDs he had purchased on his Linux machine, the Norwegian police have decided that they have little hope of winning should they appeal again and are dropping the case. Of course, you can still expect the recording industry to search for some friends in Norway to change the laws in their favor.

leave me just out of reach

leave me just out of reach 02/01/2005 09:52 PM

I just got off the phone with my manager.

The casting people loved me, and thought I gave a great reading, but . . . (wait for it) I'm not going to get a chance to bring The Script to life. The producers want to go in a different direction, and some of my essences (too smart for my own good, Passionate with a capital "P") worked against me. The tiny silver lining is that the people I read for know what I look like and what I'm bring to a role now. That's good, because there will be other shows . . . sigh.

I still haven't heard anything about the amazing movie, and it's getting harder by the day to maintain hope.

I'm really sad right now.

Turn off the lights when you leave.

Turn off the lights when you leave. 07/24/2004 06:16 PM
The end of the light bulb? E. Fred Schubert, a professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute "claims to have invented a 99-percent efficient reflector that promises to speed the replacement of light bulbs with LEDs." According to researchers, this could happen within the next five years. The current prototype is bankrolled by the ARPA and The National Science Foundation "recently award Schubert's team a $210,000 grant to create in three years a commercial version of his patented omnidirectional reflector."

"Schubert claimed that lighting accounts for 25 percent of U.S. electrical energy consumption. Since white LEDs emit more light per dollar and generate less unwanted heat, they are potentially a major energy saver."

Don't leave me, you infuriating bastard! 03/14/2005 05:52 PM

So my colleague Matt Webb is about to abandon me in the BBC and is now trying to work out what to do next. Maybe you guys can help.

This feels like my most significant decision for the past decade, and the one that will most shape my life for the coming ten years. I've no idea what to do. Last time I tried to make a decision was last year, but then the book came along and I did that instead. Before then there was another offer too good to refuse. This time I really have to decide, the time is right, because even if I decide to keep to the status quo, this time that means I'm staying in industry, pretty much for good. And whatever happens now is significant because of my age, and because the subjects I'm interested in are coming to fruition both with people and technology, and because of all kinds of other externalities (funding bodies and so on)... But I can't work it out, and I need to make a decision, I think, in the next few weeks--not only which way to turn, but which college, what focus, which subjects.

If you're thinking of employing Matt, then obviously you could send him an e-mail offering him work and stuff. Or - and I think this is a much much better idea - you could send me an e-mail with details of the opportunity and I'll make sure he gets it... in the end... as soon as I've checked that it wouldn't be more appropriate for a person of slightly wider girth experience instead... er... or something... cough... nothing to see here...

Anyway, good luck old chap. You'll be much missed, impossible to replace and work will not be as much fun without you. Think of me fondly while you're out there in the real world, and send me a postcard occasionally.
