A Cruel Death
06/06/2004 10:03 AMI hope Ronald Reagan's family is finding a measure of solace today
after the death of the former president. His 10-year battle with
Alzheimer's disease testifies to his physical strength in the face of
one of the most terrible illnesses anyone can face. The cruelty of
Alzheimer's is felt perhaps most by the family members who have to
watch, and care for, a loved one whose mind is taken away. I wish them
peace.

03/14/2005 05:09 PM Should I be scared that this is not an unusual message?

Well, okay, let's give the circumstances: I'm load-testing a server
by taking several machines and command-clicking the URL of a dynamic page as fast as possible. When
the link is fully-dynamic, the server cries in pain, fights back a
little, and then falls to the floor screaming for its mommy. When I
cache a very little bit, it looks at me and laughs.
Minimal caching == good.
An Unusual Use for Panorama
An Unusual Use for Panorama
04/11/2005 08:22 PMAdam C. Engst (~580 words)
I'm in the process of cleaning up some
LetterRip Pro-based mailing lists in preparation for moving them to
Web Crossing, and in doing so, I was faced with the age-old problem of
determining which bouncing addresses to remove. After all, if an
address bounces a few times, it's probably bad, but if it bounces only
a single time, the problem is probably temporary. LetterRip Pro
automatically generates lists of addresses that bounced after the last
list message went out; the trick is figuring out which addresses
appeared more than once. I pondered the problem briefly before
realizing that ProVUE's Panorama database was just the ticket. (See
"When You Need a Panoramic View" in TidBITS-770
A>.) After all, what were these email addresses but records in a very
simple database?
Library of unusual materials
Library of unusual materials
03/31/2005 11:46 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Inside the basement of King's College London's engineering department,
Mark Miodownik curates a "cabinet of curiosities" for materials
scientists. He started the collection in 2003 after noticing that his
colleagues trashed all kinds of unusual materials at the end of their
research projects. From News@Nature:
His collection now includes more than 300 samples,
including artificial skin made of rubber composites, and a material
known as a superslurper that absorbs 400 times its own weight in
water....
Miodownik trawls the globe in search of additions to his collection.
On a recent trip to Australia, he found himself in the remote
uranium-mining town of Broken Hill in New South Wales. He started
hunting through antique shops there to find a special type of
glass.
Miodownik explains that in the early twentieth century people thought
that radioactive materials had beneficial health properties. For this
reason, they manufactured glassware containing uranium, especially in
places such as Broken Hill that had an abundance of the
element.
In the Australian antique shops, Miodownik flashed an ultraviolet
light on various glass pieces to find one that glowed, a sign that it
contained uranium. When he found a bowl that did just that (pictured
here), he brought it back to London and added it to the
library.

SETI@home spots unusual signal... or not
09/03/2004 04:34 AM
David Pescovitz:
SETI@home has turned
up an unexplained radio signal from 1000 light years away that's,
well, unexplained. From New Scientist:
“It’s the most interesting signal from
SETI@home,” says Dan Werthimer, a radio astronomer at the
University of California, Berkeley (UCB) and the chief scientist for
SETI@home. “We’re not jumping up and down, but we are
continuing to observe it.”
Named SHGb02+14a, the signal has a frequency of about 1420 megahertz.
This happens to be one of the main frequencies at which hydrogen, the
most common element in the universe, readily absorbs and emits energy.
Some astronomers have argued that extraterrestrials trying to
advertise their presence would be likely to transmit at this
frequency, and SETI researchers conventionally scan this part of the
radio spectrum.

Update: The BBC followed up with a report
quoting researchers who say that the news above was blown out of
proportion and there is no signal. Nothing to hear here. Move along.
