home networking products and services
09/04/2004 02:40 AM
Customer satisfaction and brand loyalty regarding home networking equipment are related directly to product ease of installation and operation, according to Parks Associates’ Primary Perspectives: Complexity and Customer Satisfaction in the Networked Home. The study finds that satisfaction declines precipitously – as much as 25% – if a customer is required to make two or more service calls to install and operate home network equipment. Progress has been made in simplifying these products through standard device drivers and graphics-based installation wizards, but in order to secure long-term success in this market, developers and providers should continue devising new ways to reduce the complexity of home networking solutions. Your online shopping habits will dictate
price you pay for products
06/06/2005 12:01 AM

The referenced article caught me a little bit unaware, and as I sit here writing this, I wonder how many times I have been ripped of by online merchants that know a little to much about my buying habits. Little did I realize they are adjusting prices on a per customer basis, based upon your buying habits.

Does that make you angry, well it makes me mad enough to start doing some heavy research, and fight those companies I find out who are doing this!

If you are aware of some deceptive practices like this, then I want to know about it, and don't be afraid to give me all the juicy stuff. Have inside information that your employer or company that you are associated with is doing this, sell them out, and help me fight this practice. [CNN]

Nintendo cuts price on Game Boy Advance so company can try to entrench its number one position in the handheld game market. “Beginning Wednesday, the flip-up, color screen Game Boy Advance SP will retail for $79, down $20 from its price since debuting in the United States in March 2003.” Ooh, I feel sorry for anyone who bought a Game Boy last week at full price or higher than the new price….

gba_nes_sp1.jpg imageGamesIndustry.Biz is reporting that Nintendo will drop the price of their Game Boy Advance SP to $80 in anticipation of the November launch of the upcoming Nintendo DS. (I wonder if that will include the remaining Special NES Edition models. Hrm.) Even more interesting is US retailer chatter that the DS may launch for $150 instead of $175, as Nintendo has previously stated. Unfortunately, while the SP price drop looks fairly certain, the DS drop might just be wishful thinking.

No word on European price cuts yet, but if the US gets a drop you can expect prices to (eventually) follow elsewhere.

Tame the Training

Tame the Training 05/20/2004 05:22 PM

Great day with Michael Stephens and Bob Lewandowski (Bob, you need a blog!) today! I'm going to try and bring them back for a duplicate session on tech training for staff and patrons this fall, so Chicagoland area librarians should watch for that. Bonus points: you get to see their video!

I always enjoy talking with them, and Aaron even joined us. Good food, great company! Picture s on the moblog.

BTW, don't forget to check out Michael's Ten Tips for Technology Trainers in the Trenches!

And on a final note, it became painfully obvious today that my member libraries could use a "tech training" group, so we're going to discuss starting one at SLS. I'll keep you posted.

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

Microsoft CFO reduces costs

Microsoft CFO reduces costs 04/29/2004 09:17 AM
Microsoft Corp. Chief Financial Officer John Connors is scaling back employee business trips as part of a 13-point plan to slice costs. "We've just got to hunker down," Connors said in a March interview at his office in Redmond, Wash. Connors said he's telling workers to eliminate one in five trips, forcing them to cancel meetings or hold teleconferences. Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer, 48, and Connors, 45, have stepped up efforts to reduce expenses so Microsoft can boost profit as sales growth slows. Sales grew 17 percent to $9.18 billion in the third quarter ended March 31, and profit declined because of legal costs, the company said Wednesday in a statement distributed by PR Newswire. Revenue beat the $8.66 billion average estimate of 28 investors polled by Thomson Financial.
