Bluetooth Better on the Mac

Bluetooth Better on the Mac

Bluetooth Better on the Mac 04/09/2004 04:10 PM

Comparing Bluetooth on Mac OS X and Windows XP, Rebecca Freed writes for PC World, “When it comes down to it, there are still too many seams showing in Bluetooth on Windows. Sure, if you’re a savvy user you can make it work...Setting up my whole Bluetooth network on the Mac was quick and painless from start to finish — and truly wireless, unlike the Logitech DiNovo set.” [Mar 29]

SMC® Networks (www.smc.com), leading provider of networking solutions for the SMB/e, the ISP and all the way home, today announced the newest member of the EZ Connect™ family of home networking products, the SMC-BT10 EZ Connect Wireless Bluetooth® USB Adapter. The new Bluetooth USB adapter makes it easy to set-up a personal area network (PAN) that connects up to seven Bluetooth-equipped devices such as wireless phones or PDAs. And, Bluetooth 1.2-compliance means that it can take advantage of the better performance and faster connections, while retaining full backward compatibility. [PRWEB Dec 17, 2004]

Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth 06/10/2004 11:38 AM

bluetooth.jpgThe Bluetooth SIG, the group that controls the standards that define the short-range radio networking technology has announced a proposal for a new version of Bluetooth that offers data rates almost 3 times as fast as the previous version. Called Bluetooth EDR (for Enhanced Data Rate), the new specification claims data rates of up to 2.1Mbps and remains backward-compatible with the original Bluetooth spec. No word, however, if the enhanced data rate will causes a proportionate decrease in range, not unlike 802.11g compares to 802.11b.

Viridiana and I went to the Apple Store just an hour ago so I could pick up the bluetooth adapter. They have the 12" PowerBooks now. So neat. My latest idea is to get a PowerMac and then a 12" instead of the 17". Or something. For right now I'm happily bluetoothing my T68i. Actually, sorta happily. Why can't I syncronize groups to the phone? It helps that I can choose just one group from the address book to get...

Ironically, support for Bluetooth, which has never achieved much popularity, was dropped by Ericsson recently.

epox_bluetooth.jpg imagePC hardware review site EnvyNews reviews three low-end Bluetooth products from EPoX, the BT-HS01 wireless Bluetooth headset, the BT-DG03 Bluetooth USB Dongle, and probably most interesting, the BT-PA01 Bluetooth parallel printer port. While the dongle and headset come across only so-so, the BT-PA01 acts as a wireless parallel cable, allowing wireless connectivity to most older printers with only one catch: the communication is only one-way, meaning any diagnostic or error information sent by your printer back to your computer will be lost. Since most of us have USB or Ethernet-enable printers these days, this is a 'probably not needed by most, but nice to know it's there' sort of product.

Okay, I'm really digging this full-szied bluetooth keyboard for my Powerbook. So much so, that I'm tempted to buy a second one to leave at work. But having a larger keyboard keeps my hands uncomfortably far from the touch pad. Anyone got a recommendation for a bluetooth mouse that has more than one button (sorry, Apple) and works well with a Powerbook? I'll probably use it left-handed about half the time, so I'd prefer one that is not shaped for...

Review: Belkin Bluetooth mouse 09/23/2004 09:57 PM
I've been looking for the ideal Bluetooth mouse almost as long as I've had my PowerBook G4. Unfortunately this isn't it. I chose the Belkin bluetooth mouse for its price and number of buttons, and because Microsoft's Bluetooth IntelliMouse isn't compatible with Macs.

The Belkin mouse is fairly large, but is very comfortable to use if you're right-handed. If you have a computer with Bluetooth built in, you won't need to use any adapter with it, which makes it more convenient than regular cordless mice.
