While I never really thought plasma was worth looking at, the DLP and LCD sets out there are either too large or too expensive. This low end panasonic 37" plays movies beautifully and does just fine on regular satellite broadcasts. Plus, it was dirt cheap (for a plasma) at Costco.

Now I just need to figure out where in the hell I'll put a center channel speaker, since the stand bulges out and gets in the way. Maybe it's time to finally go with some cheap in-wall units, though I've pretty much burned all my selfish purchase karma for the year (and probably next year too).

Linux and thin clients

Linux and thin clients 04/14/2005 12:34 PM
The primary goal of Linux desktop operation is to give users access to typical desktop applications -- word processors, spreadsheets, Web browsers, etc. An alternative exists to this configuration, though: thin client computing. In many respects, thin client computing is very old; the typical mainframe model, with a large central server and many dumb terminals attached to it, closely resembles thin client computing. Thin clients, though, give users the ability to run GUI programs. Before going too far with a desktop Linux deployment, you may want to consider a Linux thin client solution. It's not for everybody, but some sites can benefit from it.

Inspired by index cards, the "Thin Cut" lamp by Cordula Kafka is a set of ceiling-suspended porcelain sheets that have cut outs on the inside for four bulbs. Light shines through the panels with various amounts though the panels, which move in the wind (or whatever sort of draft you get inside).

Wafer-thin Clock

Wafer-thin Clock 06/17/2005 06:18 PM

paperthindigitalclock.jpgI've seen this thing about 5 million times already, but it seems that we're getting closer to actually getting some shipping product, at least in Japan. It's basically a paper-thin LCD created by Citizen and is completely flexible and portable. If this goes to market in 2005, as this article says, look for cooler implementations of the same technology in 2006 and beyond. I would not be surprised if folks aren't waiting on eBook readers until this tech gets a little more common, thereby offering the mobility of paper and the coolness of LCD.

Microsoft has been highly successful in establishing a dominant hold over its core market. However, the company's ventures into new territory have had less stunningly positive outcomes. Elvis on a Wheat Thin?

Elvis on a Wheat Thin? 03/17/2005 03:13 AM

A while back we talked about a grilled cheese sandwich with the image of the Virgin Mary on it, which sold for $28,000 on Ebay. Today I heard a story on the radio about Miles Bradley, an antique dealer in Chamberlain, SD — just down the road a piece — who found a Wheat Thin cracker with a likeness of Elvis' head on it. Or so some say. I just don't see it. Bradley tried to repeat the grilled cheese success & cash in on his find by selling it on eBay.

Apparently I wasn't the only one who failed to see The King on the cracker. (Take a look at the pictures on the auction site & let me know what you think.) The bidding failed to break the $500 reserve price, and the auction closed with a high bid of $451. The disappointed Bradley is reportedly going to give it another shot, but if it doesn't break the $500 reserve this time, he's gonna eat it. He probably should've done that to begin with.

If it were me, after going to the trouble of listing it on Ebay, I would've taken the $451 and run.

Is the Jobs market too thin?

Is the Jobs market too thin? 12/06/2003 10:54 AM
Yes, Virginia, there is something called corporate grandeur. In the New York Post yesterday, a “H’Wood Buzz” article emerged speculating that Steve Jobs could very well become “the most welcome second-in-charge and nominal successor to (Walt Disney Co. chair Michael) Eisner." At first, mouse ears and iMacs might seem like Shangri la, but for a man who’s already two full-time CEOs, things could get a little tricky if a third job opportunity came along.

Thin client, rich data

Thin client, rich data 06/15/2004 08:32 AM
Current approaches to taking browsers offline typically enqueue messages that later update a server-based data model. An Alchemy application, though, always works with a genuine local data model that it stores as sets of XML fragments and navigates in a relational style. Bosworth's hunch is that a Web-style thin client, driven by a rich data model intelligently synchronized with the services cloud, could do most of what we really need -- both offline and online. Nothing prevents Java, .Net, and Flash clients from adopting the same strategy, by the way. But if Bosworth is right, the universal client that we know and love could get a new lease on life. Digital Clock as Thin as Paper

Digital Clock as Thin as Paper 06/17/2005 03:17 PM
Just when you thought watches couldn't get any more advanced, Citizen Watch has created a digital clock that is as thin as paper!

Utilizing the electronic paper display technology, Citizen Watch has created a digital clock that is as thin as paper. This unique design is enabled by E Ink(r)Imaging Film. This easy-to-read, low-power display component is fully conformable, allowing product designers more creative freedom than ever before.

The clock boasts twice the contrast of a reflective LCD, Low power consuption, because there's no backlight and a flexible form allowing developers to create curved eye catching shapes.

Citizen Watch have not yet announced a launch date for this product, but it is expected to be commercialized in Japan in 2005. Plans for the international launch are under consideration, along with other design interpretations.

  • NY Times: Fox News Rejects Left-Wing Magazine Ad. While the ad will appear on Time Warner's CNN, as well as NBC Universal's MSNBC and Bravo, it will not appear on Fox News, a division of the News Corporation whose chairman and chief executive is Rupert Murdoch. "They rejected it out of hand," said Arthur Stupar, senior vice president for circulation at The Nation. "I find it ironic. They are the G.O.P. cable station, a champion of free markets, and they got spooked at the thought of running an ad that doesn't publish spin or serve the agenda of corporate conglomerates."
