NY Times: Bush Dismisses Idea That Kerry Lied on Vietnam. President Bush said on Thursday that he did not believe Senator John Kerry lied about his war record, but he declined to condemn the television commercial paid for by a veterans group alleging that Mr. Kerry came by his war medals dishonestly.

At last the president does the right thing, at least part of it. But if he really believes Kerry is telling the truth, it's strange that he doesn't say what inexorably follows: that the people who made those ads should stop their lying. Anyway, congratulations to Bush for showing some common decency.

Apparently, Russian President Putin has the same issue many parents of teenaged girls face: he can't get his daughters to stop sitting at the computer all the time chatting with friends. He says he can't understand the purpose of all that talk. Of course, this is no different than pre-internet days when teenaged girls would chat via the phone all the time. It's just what they do. Mrs. Putin, however, has cracked down, and put some sort of password on her computer to stop the daughters from chatting. How quickly do you think they'll figure out a way around that blockade?

Once again I was planning to spend my evening writing time organizing and writing up my notes about ETech, but this time I find myself compelled to write about the newest abomination visited upon the American people and our democracy by George Bush and Karl Rove. Like some other people, I am not particularly enamored of the institution of marriage, which has as its foundation the transfer of a woman and her property from her father to her husband's custody, usually in return for property. Marriage is not an institution that has historically been very friendly to women, and for myself I personally prefer a version of civil union. When I read about San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's decision to order the city clerk to grant marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, I had doubts about it, fearing that politically, it was tactically unwise, and that Dan Gillmor and Lawrence Lessig were right that legally, it was a very shaky proposition to order city officials to break the law, no matter how asinine the law was (although see the principled conservative Volokh arguing that Newsom was legally within his rights to uphold the constitution over the statute). However, in the days since Newsom's decision I have been brought to tears several times by the many wonderful pictures and stories of the couples who went to extraordinary lengths to make it into the San Francisco City Clerk's office to have their love and commitment solemnized and officially recognized. My heart was also moved by the outwelling of support from around the world for these couples who were waiting in line, sometimes for days in the rain. It was one of San Francisco' finest moments. The stories made me proud to live in the Bay Area. If you haven't already, read the some of the stories 1 2 3 4 and look at the pictures 1 2. 3 4 5 6 7, and watch the fantastic flash movie of the couples just after they are married that someone has already made. Their words and faces say more than I ever could. Then yesterday that miserable failure in the White House decided to take advantage of the situation in San Francisco for political advantage, playing politics with love and using people's fears to divide our nation and set citizens against each other. Recently, President Bush announced his new policy for space. President Bush is to be praised for his bold new vision, including at least two crucial points: Humans can and should travel beyond low Earth orbit (LEO). Robotic exploration is valuable and important however is not sufficient to satisfy the human spirit. George W. Bush deserves great credit for making this point. The space shuttle must be retired. Cancellation of the wasteful shuttle system offers significant opportunity for reinvestment of significant funding. These are significant steps forward. The vision is plainly there. I see opportunity and risk for President Bush. If he demonstrates commitment to follow through with this powerful vision, he will supplant JFK as America's premier space President. If not, his recent speech may be remembered, if at all, as empty rhetoric.

1. Reuters reported a letter from an al-Qaeda group that said “it supported U.S. President George W. Bush in his reelection campaign, and would prefer him to win in November rather than the Democratic candidate John Kerry, as it was not possible to find a leader ‘more foolish than you (Bush), who deals with matters by force rather than with wisdom.

2. A top CIA expert on al-Qaeda has concluded that al-Qaeda loves President Bush, and might go so far as to plan an election attack to rally the country around Bush.

3. Even administration officials concede “al-Qaeda has morphed into a loose and expanding association of regional terror cells [and] the Iraq war has fueled rather than doused the fires of jihad.”

Authenticity of new Bush military papers questioned: The question of whether the damaging military records on President Buish are accurate or not is coming down to a Word formatting question.

Independent document examiner Sandra Ramsey Lines said the memos looked like they had been produced on a computer using Microsoft Word software. Lines, a document expert and fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, pointed to a superscript — a smaller, raised "th" in "111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron" — as evidence indicating forgery.

Microsoft Word automatically inserts superscripts in the same style as the two on the memos obtained by CBS, she said.

"I'm virtually certain these were computer generated," Lines said after reviewing copies of the documents at her office in Paradise Valley, Ariz. She produced a nearly identical document using her computer's Microsoft Word software.

Finally there's some value for knowing the 95% of stuff in Word that no one ever uses or cares about. Who knew that knowing that could change the course of history?
