Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PMYesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were
whini
ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting
their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize
that going to the movies is a
social experience. It's not just
about the content (though, that is important), but the overall
experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go --
even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap
DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to
entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that
story pointed to an article in China noting that
this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done.
After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made
going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience,
putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved
the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made
some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away
from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in
Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

Book Review: Against All Enemies
04/17/2004 03:20 PMWhen Against All Enemies was published a few weeks ago, it was greeted
by a flurry of press and blogsphere discussion, almost entirely
focused on the book's criticisms of the Bush administration. Those
criticisms are largely contained within the book's final chapter, a
chapter that feels grafted on, and which is significantly different in
tone from the rest of the book. It's unfortunate that this chapter has
become the focus for discussion of the book - a fact which argues
that, perhaps, it shouldn't have been included at all. The majority
of the book is a discussion of how the first Bush administration and
the Clinton administration gradually came to realize the existence of
al Qaeda and tried to figure out what to do about it. The story is
framed, at the beginning and the end, by the events of September 11,
2001 (during which Clarke was one of the people primarily responsible
for government operations during the hours until President Bush took
charge) - but that is simply the framing; the real meat of the book
takes place in an earlier time. The time that laid the groundwork for
that day.

Enemies of Carlotta is a simple mailing list
manager. It tries to mimic the ezmlm software
somewhat, but is written completely from scratch
in Python. It has a less restrictive license than
ezmlm and qmail, and is smaller and simpler than
GNU Mailman.
Changes:
Moderators for posting can now be separate from
list owners. Bounces may be ignored. Header MIME
encodings can be disabled. Address comparison bugs
were fixed. Debug logging no longer fills up
stderr buffers.

SMS Novel To Become MMS Movie
SMS Novel To Become MMS Movie
09/20/2004 06:52 AMNot so long ago, there was a bit of a press frenzy over a novel that
was being delivered via SMS text messaging in China. Well, to build
off of that hype, a company has now
bought the film rights to the story,
and yes, they will be filming it in short segments which can be sent
to mobile phones as well. While I do think mobile video content
should be focused on shorter bits of content, given that the people
viewing it are likely to be on the go and/or interrupted more
frequently, I wonder how well you can hold the plot line of a movie
that's broken into so many pieces.

Creative Commons
staff went down to Brazil to oversee the launch of one of the
first country-specific licenses. There was a big event attended by
Gilberto Gil, the Minister of Culture for Brazil, and a film crew
followed everyone around for a couple days.
The
result is a nice little 11 minute film on the process of the
licenses, the impact it could have on their culture, and reactions
from the launch event. Watch it at the Internet Archive, and if you
have your own videos like this to share, be sure to try out
our CC Publisher

VoIP: The Movie
VoIP: The Movie
09/17/2004 02:31 PMThis is almost painful. A broadband provider trying to push the
concept of VoIP (no, they don't deserve any more publicity by being
named here) has decided to start an advertising campaign for VoIP that
involves a series of
movie trailers about
"VoIP: The Movie" which are designed to look like trailers from a
thriller movie, and which aren't at all clear about what they're
really advertising (though, the phone does seem to play a central
part). Cue
movie
trailer voiceover voice: "No one can escape it, we're all slaves
to it...."
