NEed Help Setting up Wirless Card. 04/09/2004 04:10 PM

I just bought a 802.11 b wirless card for my laptop. The problem is i don't yet have a wireless router in my home and do not know the ESSID of any wireless port/point. I do not know should i set it to Ad-Hoc or infrastructure. I need help on this matter. What do i configure so that i can pick up any public/unrestricted wirless points? Please e-mail me your suggestions at dark_lord@whoever.com or post your reply here. Thank you for your time.

Perhaps it was just a matter of time... a Dark Side deck posted on Rebelbasers revealed the awesome power of, believe it or not, the "lowly" Ugnaught. When used in conjunction with a few other cards, it became quite easy for this deck (or variations thereof) to leave a Light Side player with nothing but their initial Setup to go up against a deck that could virtually replenish itself indefinitely. Trouble Setting Up 802.11g Networks

Trouble Setting Up 802.11g Networks 12/19/2003 07:35 PM
Some writers at the Dallas Morning News tried out a couple of 802.11g products and ran into a lot of trouble: This story gives a nice glimpse into the experience of a couple of guys without tons of technical experience trying to set up a network. They first noticed incompatabilities between products that were based on the draft standard and those issued after the final standard. They also struggled with implementing WEP and WPA. In fact, they couldn't implement either when installing D-Link gear. They also couldn't implement D-Link's XtremeG upgrade that boosts speed to 108 Mbps. The Toshiba blue screen of death problem they report could have come from installing the Microsoft Windows XP WPA update on a Toshiba Centrino model. Last time we checked, the Toshiba Centrino wasn't certified to use that update; Intel long ago (May) released a compatibility update to manufacturers for WPA, but each Centrino vendor has to release it separately as part of their driver update package....

Linksys Network Storage Link, Turn Any
USB Harddrive Into Network Storage
06/15/2004 11:54 AM

linksys_nslu.jpg imageWhile they're promoting it with Maxtor, there's nothing stopping you from using Linksys's new Network Storage Link (NSLU2) with any external USB hard drive to turn it into a network storage device (not unlike the Mirra or other backup units). Storage Link even provides passworded web-access to files and multiple users (although they don't get into the details of how multi-user sharing will work). Since the Storage Link works via RJ-45 (regular ol' Ethernet), there's nothing preventing you from attaching it to a wireless router and using it over WiFi, either (albeit at lower speeds than a wired network, of course). Even better, it sounds like you can continue to add additional USB hard drives to the device to increase storage as you go along. Not bad for $100.

Home network complexity challenges

installation complexity – quantified by
“help desk” calls – reduces both

home networking products and services
09/04/2004 02:40 AM
Customer satisfaction and brand loyalty regarding home networking equipment are related directly to product ease of installation and operation, according to Parks Associates’ Primary Perspectives: Complexity and Customer Satisfaction in the Networked Home. The study finds that satisfaction declines precipitously – as much as 25% – if a customer is required to make two or more service calls to install and operate home network equipment. Progress has been made in simplifying these products through standard device drivers and graphics-based installation wizards, but in order to secure long-term success in this market, developers and providers should continue devising new ways to reduce the complexity of home networking solutions. Comcast Offers Home Network
Installation, Equipment Rental

Comcast Offers Home Network
Installation, Equipment Rental
05/05/2004 03:44 PM
Comcast will install Wi-Fi gear, configure a router, and rent it to their customers with new program: Comcast Home Networking includes the delivery and installation of Wi-Fi networking for a setup fee and $5 per month (covering the router and one PC Card). Setup costs $200 for two computers up to $300 for five computers, the maximum covered by this deal. A current discount program chops $100 off that price until June 1. The terms and pricing don't explain the rental fee for the second through fifth computers' hardware, referring to a "rate card" that isn't on the Web site. The installation includes configuring and setting a WEP encryption key for the network, a task which with certain equipment can cause grown men and women to weep. There's definitely a place for a service in which the equipment is covered against defects. The site for the program doesn't note this, but Comcast's overarching subscriber terms says, During the term of this Agreement, Comcast will repair and maintain all Comcast Equipment and you agree that the Comcast Equipment will not be serviced by anyone other than Comcast employees or agents. Part of the press release noted that this package, offered as $52.95 per month excluding the rental fees and install fees, has up to 4 Mbps download speeds and 384 Kbps upload speeds. The basic package is $42.95 per month for 3 Mbps down and 256Kbps up. These prices require a Comcast cable subscription; it's $10 extra per month without such a subscription. (Macintosh users need not apply.) Qwest DSL's comparable service is $39.99/month for 1.5 Mbps down, 896 Kbps up (with Qwest phone service). Qwest also offers a wireless option with less support and no installation but without the rental cost: you just buy an Actiontec device with 802.11g and DSL modem support built in....
