Apple Security Updates?

Apple Security Updates? 03/06/2004 01:59 AM

I'm always confused about whether or not to install Apple's Security Updates as soon as they're available. Today's latest release...

Security Update 2004-02-23 delivers a number of security enhancements and is recommended for all Macintosh users. This update includes the following components:

DiskArbitration
IPSec
Point-to-Point-Protocol
tcpdump

Ok, first, I don't know what any of those things are good for, and why I need them, or why I need them updated... and, on top of that, I haven't ever gotten a virus or had any security problems with my Macintosh.

Do I really need to install this update?

(If I were notified by Microsoft that there was a security update available through XP's Windows Update software, I'd install it before I did anything else on that computer, but on a Mac, I always wonder if I even really need to worry about it)

Apple updates Shake

Apple updates Shake 04/17/2005 06:47 PM
Along with Final Cut Studio, Apple also updated its 3D compositing application, Shake, to version 4. Set to ship in June, Shake will be available for $2,999, with a cross-platform version costing $4,999. Upgrades from prior versions will be $999. According to Apple’s Web site: Artists can now composite live action and 3D CGI layers with added realism using Shake’s new OpenGL accelerated 3D multi-plane compositing node. Seamlessly integrated into the node view, 3D compositing works with the same flexible user interface as every other operation and is as fast and high quality as 2D operations. Shake 4 presents an entirely new dimension by offering the ability to position, rotate and animate unlimited layers and cameras in 3D space Shake 4 integrates Truelight monitor calibration to maintain color consistency between the computer screen and the final look of the film, allowing compositors to accurately pre-visualize the look of their HD or film imagery, saving time and effort. Shake 4 can also distribute visual effects processing across a cluster of Apple’s Xserve® G5 servers or Power Mac G5 desktop computers for maximum rendering performance and efficiency. Shake 4 completes the digital production pipeline as it tightly integrates with Apple’s Final Cut Studio, the ultimate HD video production suite which allows professional editors to work in any format from DV, SD, HD to film, and elevate production values with powerful editing tools, revolutionary sound design, real-time motion graphics and next generation DVD authoring. Shake 4 can now launch directly from the Final Cut Pro 5 timeline and using the XML interchange format, cuts and layers from the timeline automatically generate a Shake process tree.
