The Trojan dragon

The Trojan dragon 08/30/2004 10:32 AM
Sunday’s United for Peace and Justice march had been progressing peacefully (if noisily and enthusiastically) up Seventh Avenue in Manhattan for almost four hours when a green paper dragon float came to a standstill on the east side of the street, directly across from a giant FOX News Billboard ("America's Newsroom") and just in front of a McDonald's restaurant. The base of the float was hung with paper banners with anti-corporate messages, behind which figures could be seen scurrying about, bent almost double so as not to be spotted. Suddenly, about 20 people, mostly young men, started spilling out of the belly of the dragon and running north. They were dressed all in black, and were wearing bandanas over their mouths like surgical masks.

A malicious Trojan horse program has emerged for Pocket PCs, antivirus companies announced but they characterised the threat as relatively low.

The program, known alternately as Backdoor.Bardor.A and WinCE.Brador.a, lets an attacker gain full control of the handheld and is the first such "backdoor Trojan" program to emerge for Pocket PCs. However, such backdoor programs are not capable of propagating on their own and instead must be sent as email attachments or through similar means, making them less dangerous.

Symantec rated the bug a "one," the lowest on its five-point scale. In a statement, the company offered the standard warning not to open or execute files from unknown sources.

"Backdoor server and Trojan horse programs often use enticing file names to trick users into executing them," said Oliver Friedrichs, senior manager, Symantec Security Response. The bug appears to be limited to devices that use an ARM processor and Microsoft's Pocket PC operating systems, Symantec said.

Last month, researchers identified the first Windows CE virus, which researchers said was mostly a "proof-of-concept" bug, or one designed to demonstrate its own feasibility.

“Three weeks after the 29A virus group launched Duts, the first proof-of-concept virus for personal digital assistants (PDAs) running PocketPC, a new Trojan horse is targeting the handheld devices, according to Russian-based Kaspersky Labs. WinCE.Brador-A was probably written by a Russian virus coder, said Eugene Kaspersky, head of antivirus research at Kaspersky Labs. The Trojan was attached to an e-mail with a Russian sender and Russian text inside. The author was offering to sell the…

Intego Exaggerated the Trojan

Intego Exaggerated the Trojan 04/09/2004 06:47 PM
An article over at Wired states that Intego has blown this whole Trojan problem out of proportion. According to experts, The Trojan (mentioned here and here) "...isn't a working piece of malicious code and can't easily be spread to other computers. Instead, it is a demonstration of a possible threat." In response, Intego has apparently changed their story from that of attacking an imminent threat to preparing for a future threat.

"It is a benign proof of concept that was posted to a newsgroup. It isn't in the wild, and can't be spread in the wild. It's a non-issue." ~ Dave Schroeder
