Lead Electric Triangle

Lead Electric Triangle 04/09/2004 04:10 PM

I can't believe I just discovered the live music section of the Internet Archive today. Through their feed, I was notified of a new Glen Phillips recording. Boom! Live concerts are mere megabytes away from my media player. Even satellite radio can't touch this kind of convenience....

Bacteria blamed for Bermuda Triangle

Bacteria blamed for Bermuda Triangle 06/17/2005 03:34 PM
David Pescovitz: Scientists at Cardiff University are studying whether bacteria that thrive in the high pressures of deep ocean sediments could be a source of sustainable energy. Some of the bacteria spew methane that accumulates in massive fields of ice-like "methane hydrates." Methane hydrates might also be the secret behind an old mystery. From the press release:
Triangle One theory now suggests that when the covering of "methane ice" which exists over much of the seabed of the Bermuda Triangle becomes unstable; this causes instability of the sea and an explosive mixture of air and methane above. Any ships or planes travelling over the area could sink or catch fire.

"So ancient, deep-sediment bacteria may be a key to sustainable energy in the future and to explaining a few disasters," said Professor (R. John) Parkes.

Springfield, Missouri, launches downtown Wi-Fi with no fuss: BelAir supplied the gear that provides service primarily to college students. The utility-run service cost $70,000 to set up and only offers an hour of access at a go, keeping SBC's objections at bay. San Francisco's Public Utilities Commission votes to look further into municipal wireless: They'll spend $300,000 to figure out whether they can build a municipally run broadband network. I hope they set realistic goals, like charging for access for most users, having free hotzones in public places, and having good goals for speed, like 500 Kbps, not 5 Mbps into homes. Sacramento is looking into it, too: They want to blanket downtown with free Wi-Fi with a private company providing the service....

_40287239_gemfront203.jpg imageThe BBC is reporting that the Daimler Chrysler Gem, the tiny little electric runabout with a 40 mile range and a relatively short 7 hour recharge time has gone on sale in the UK. Available in both 2- and 4-door versions, the UK importer ZEV Ltd. plans to sell around 350 of the units in the next 18 months. Even better, the Gems are exempt from the UK road tax and London's congestion charge.

Skinplex is a new commercial technology that uses the human body as a conductor of data. According to an article in EE Times, the developers, German start-up Ident Technoogy AG, hope to compete with RFID, Bluetooth, and Near Field Communications (NFC) for some applications:
Skinplex technology could be used between an identifier worn on the user's body and a receiver integrated into a car, for example. A distinct code is transmitted through touch, the receiver recognizes its dedicated, authorized sender, and the car door is opened, for example.
This reminds me of the Personal Area Network research at MIT's Media Lab in the mid-1990s. Neil Gershenfeld and Thomas Zimmerman demonstrated a system where two people could trade electronic business cards by shaking hands. Link (via Carlo Longino at TheFeature)

Maybe you've seen the Electric Arc of Death video. OK, so maybe it's just capable of death if you get too close. But, if you work in the power industry like I do, I was amazed to see this rather impressive video of a switchyard problem. Electric arcs involving switchgear for transmission lines are nothing new, and this link provides an excellent analysis of why this arc is occuring. Make sure you turn the volume up for an extra charge of excitement.

While Scout recently reported on hybrid automobiles from the current make and model point of view, this topic in depth explores the history and technology of electric and hybrid cars and considers the options available for car buyers and the future of fuel cell technology. This article from the Detroit News suggests electric vehicles are becoming popular (1). The second website (1) provides an interactive history and archived documents about the development of electric vehicles. The third link describes a specific program involving U.S. corporations and the Federal government (2). The fourth link takes you to Argonne Laboratories transportation website, which provides articles and reviews recent research developments (3). If you are looking to buy an electric or hybrid car this website provides information on the various alternative vehicles and, and California residents can find out about state government-sponsored incentives for car buyers (4). This last website from the Why Files offers an analysis of some of the pros and cons of electric vehicles and suggests fuel cells have more potential (5). See Spot and his electric sheep

See Spot and his electric sheep 05/05/2004 11:14 AM

Electric
Sheep image by Spot DravesSpot Draves' presentation of his electric sheep was one of the best presentations I attended at last February's O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference. Electric Sheep is a screen saver that uses a distributed computing model (a la SETI@home) to create and render new "sheep."

When the screen-saver is activated, the screen goes black and an animated 'sheep' appears. Behind the scenes, the screen-saver contacts a server and joins the parallel computation of new sheep.

Every fifteen minutes 24/7 a new sheep is born and distributed to all clients for display. Each sheep is an animated fractal flame.

The sheep are amazingly beautiful, and hearing Spot speak about his work is great. Lucky for you, if you're in NYC tonight you can experience it yourself. Spot will be doing his presentation at the dorkbot-nyc gathering. Also there will be a presentation on "Gameboy Hacks" at the same meeting! It's a geek's delight! Wednesday, May 5, 7pm at Location One in SoHo (NYC).
